(Our qualities are our defects - virtue is a balance between two extremes, which are vices - Aristoteles' Golden Mean). To Light, the goal is to be the ruler, a god, justice, and a dictator. The argument of "making a better world" is his excuse for his natural desires. It's easy to see this because, in a few chapters, Light "forgot" the justice to focus on defeating/killing L. His weakness? Goes without saying. LOL

In other words, he had one of the highest ranks among the angels and was closer to God than the others. His name means bringer of Light. He was the most beautiful, wisest, cunning, full of radiance, and had several shining stones. He wanted to be equal to God, and in some theological interpretations, he was responsible for creating the first competitive thought. When God expelled him, he lost his Grace but did not lose his characteristics. His wisdom was corrupted, and his desire for revenge and competitiveness increased. In addition to hating God, he hates his creation: the human being, who, for him, is an inferior being.

Hence, the apple (used to portray the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil) and its symbol of sin and temptation. 2) the cross when the name of the anime appears (the cross appears other times); 3) La PietΓ (probably the one by Michelangelo that is in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican); 4) Light superimposed on an image of an ANGEL carrying a quill in one hand and a notebook; 5) And the apple. During the anime, you frequently hear Gregorian chants and bell ringing, reminiscent of Christianity and Catholicism. The only Japanese religious/mythological reference is the Shinigami (supernatural beings that try to persuade people's thoughts so that they tire their own lives, which was adapted in the anime since it doesn't do that).

The anime wants us to be convinced or sympathetic to Light in some matters, to replicate the same dynamic between humans and the Christian devil. I think the creator of Death Note wanted to bring this characteristic of being tempting to follow some of Lucifer's ideas, like a better world than God's (even angels followed him, the fallen angels), and the wisdom, cunning, competitiveness, beauty, manipulator, seductive that make human beings (according to Christian tradition) surrender and follow him, thinking we are doing the right thing.

2024-05-30 09:00:25 +0000 UTCIts not about if Light is good or bad anymore. Without the Death Note, Light very well could've fallen in the footsteps of his father. This story is about corruption of power, true power, and about the conflict in balance. The opportunities presented to us in this story indicate the idea that there is balance in the universe. When a human gifted with the powers of death surfaces, it invites challenge of the world's greatest consulting detective to defeat him. We're just watching this chess match play out now. Who is good or bad is kind of irrelevant at this point. Both see themselves, as with all people, the heroes of their own stories and the other as their villain/nemesis. The story then comes down to change/progress (Light) vs maintaining the status quo (L).
