I take back that Levi did not think Eren was a monster....Levi very clearly calls him a "real monster" back in the Female Titan arc, I now remember. Except that Levi thought that within the potential of Eren was the possibility for peace, or at least an end to the Titan nightmare and the affliction of what they thought was the whole of humanity. Turns out our characters and protagonists and are not even considered human, they are reviled by the great majority of the world, a world not justified in denying the humanity of the people of Paradis, but a world understandably afraid of what Subjects of Ymir can become at a moments' notice. I always thought Isayama might bring an answer to the problem of conflict of humanity, to the innate cruelty of the world....Isayama uses that word throughout as the theme of the show, cruelty, the very basic underlying condition that afflicts all people against one another in their own struggle for survival. In forums and comment sections I used to write long answers, essays, opinions of the intricate themes and conflicts of the show, and that perhaps the magic moment of truth and insight might still be reached and realized, like Hange hopes. Isayama, like the viewers, was looking for an answer, and his characters are not held back, he honestly conveys and delves into their fears, their psyche, their hopes, with a level of maturity that rises the characters above mere caricatures. Very few pieces of media show in such a manner the conflict on what is the truth, on who is right to fight what, in a way that pulls readers to either side of the conflict with just as much justification and validity. Isayama truly let the characters breathe, shine, and develop into great characters arcs for discussion.

True. Adding to your point, the fact that Hajime Isayama didn't subvert Floch's world view with his own, as so many writers do so often, speaks volumes to the level of respect he has for the characters he creates and the audience he is telling his story too. He allows them to be who they are so the audience can be the ones to judge them, with our great varying verdicts, in the end. This is one of the many reasons why AOT shines so brightly as a series.

One wonders if Erwin could've made it to the Marleyan land, he could've given an impassioned speech that would convince them to stop fighting the Eldians. Live and let live and such.

Joe Blankenship

V, you wonder what would Erwin say with everything going on? Pixis asked him back in episode 43, before going into battle..... "I once heard a song that humans will someday stop fighting, but when will that be?" Erwin says, "Humans will continue to fight one another until the day there's one human or less..." Pixis laughs, "I was hoping for a better answer than some bleak hyperbole." Levi still had hope in Eren. Hange still had hope people would understand one another.. Erwin would not have gone along with the genocide either.

David Caine

I always thought all Floch needed was a nice fedora hat to round out the whole package. I loathed Floch, like most, but not as much as most, because as you pointed out, he's had quite the character development from the coward that did not want to go out to battle, at least I respect he is the only one that is NOT an idealist, he just calls it out as it is, he is the most realistic, even more than Levi because Levi thought Eren was not a monster but hope, while Floch fully embraces the evil that Eren is going to unleash in order for Paradis to survive. Everyone else is still holding on to maybes, hopefullys, to their dreams, to their delusions that everything is gonna turn out fine if we hold hands and sing Kumbaya.

David Caine

Jean's character develop is good but the character with the best character development is by far 👑KING FLOCH👑!!! ALL HAIL 👑KING FLOCH👑 ! ALL HAIL THE ELDIAN RESTORATION MOVEMENT !! ALL HAIL JEAGERISM !!! ALL HAIL OUR DEAR LEADER 👑KING FLOCH👑 !!!! EREN JEAGER'S STRONGEST AND MOST DEDICATED SOLDIDER !!!!! 😜

I love that by the end of the episode you had basically forgotten about your Annie prediction, just to be surprised and vindicated of your intro right at the end with the to be continued screen. lol Good call V.

Does Crunchyroll split the finale up into episodes? Or do they run together like they did when it aired?

Joe Blankenship

Such a PHENOMENAL episode and reaction! Gosh, I'm enjoying this reaction series so much, SO hyped to see more. All the feels in this ep tooooo

James Payne

In case you don't know, the last two episodes are 2.5 hours in total

Haru

If you're wondering what Erwin would have thought about everything that's going on just look at Floch, he was made to be pretty much an Erwin Jr, with roughly the same mentality !

Dorak

Your excitement to see Annie is everything. I can't wait for the next episode!

I'm so glad that we finally got to this point! That titan that charged against Jean, Armin, Mikasa, and Conny was designed off of Saul Goodman in the manga! I am so, so ,SOOOOOOOOOOO glad that you finished Breaking Bad before this point too! The series creator, Hajime Isiyama, was heavily influenced by watching Breaking Bad, and you can kind of see that through Eren. Just like how Walter White slowly turned into the monster that we all knew throughout the span of 5 seasons, we can see the similarity of Eren becoming the monster within the span of these 4 seasons, both figuratively and literally!

Did you recognize the Titan that attacked Kaya when Gabi saved her? That was Nile, the one from the Military Police, Erwin's friend, the one that let Falco go with his brother a few episodes ago. Poor guy, it did hurt to see him go like that, he joins a lot of memorable side characters, like Moblit, Marco, Marlowe and others that hit the feels when they died. Also, Jimmy Mcgill aka Saul Goodman makes a cameo here, he is the first Titan that attacks Jean and the guys. Isayama is a fan of the Breaking Bad universe. I wonder why.😂

David Caine

Did you notice how that one titan looked like Saul Goodman? 😃 an easter egg the author dropped while writing the manga.

There were a lot of things to love in this episode. As weird as it sounds, it was almost nice to see them fighting Titans again like the old days. It felt nostalgic. Poor Pixis though. 😭 But I agree with you about Jean, I remember way back in season one you said he was one of your favorites and you thought deep down he was a good guy. Now we see how far he’s come and watching him basically in the role of commander here and taking charge of the Scouts was awesome. Then we got the whole Gabi and Kaya thing…😭. So many great moments in this one!

Information available for public disclosure: Anti-Titan Rifle A large-caliber, single-shot rifle developed for use against Titans. Debuting in the surprise attack of Paradis Island, it's powerful enough to bring down a Titan with a hit to its nape, but the rifle's utility is questionable. Its size, weight, and significant recoil make it a liability to the shooter.
