The part with Tommy Johnson is a nod to Robert Johnson who supposedly sold his Soul to the devil in exchange for being able to play the guitar very well. He was a real person and the first member of the “27 club”. His songs “Hellhound on my Trail”, “Me and The Devil Blues” and “Crossroads” are among his most popular, I think it’s cool this movie gave him a cameo

If you are looking for a great musical to watch there are three i would recommend: Little Shop of Horrors (1986) The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical (2005)

Leeland

For another musical im still hoping for LA LA LAND one day

This was so fun to watch. Another parallel with the Odyssey is way they killed John Goodman's cyclops character. In the Odyssey they blinded the cyclops with a burning piece of wood, in the movie they crushed him with a burning piece of wood, a cross in this case.

I think you got most of the Odyssey references. Everett’s misogynist rants about women are based on Odysseus killing all the servant girls who have been working against Penelope and they flip Penelope’s refusal of the suitors so that Penny accepts the suitor and refuses Everett. The reason Odysseus’s men are cursed is because they kill sacred cows so that’s why George is executed. Pete warning them in the cinema is the underworld scene. It’s a very loose adaptation. This movie was one my dad took me to which was an out of character thing and makes it a very fond memory for me. The Coen Brother’s other musical is called Hail, Caesar! It’s just as good but very different.

Director's cut of Little Shop of Horrors, for a musical you'll like.

Sonny Smith

I love the soundtrack to this movie, absolutely one of my favorites. I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow is such a good song that I still listen to on occasion. The whole movie is just a wild ride the whole way.

loved your reaction to one of my absolute favorite films! I think you did just fine on the parallels and easter eggs.... for the record, $10 in 1937 would be $213 today, 1.5 MILLION dollars in '37 would be 32 million bucks today. One minor slip up: George Nelson was shot dead by FBI agents in Chicago in 1934, so the chances of him meeting up with our three protagonists is precisely ZERO. I LOVE the music in this, I've listened to it every since. Speaking of music, one of my favorite off-beat films, which I have NEVER seen a youtube or patreon reaction to, is called A Mighty Wind. It's one of Christopher Guest's mockumentary films. HILARIOUS and entertaining, centered around 3 fictional folk groups coming together for a concert decades after their hayday. The music is ALL original FOR the film. Vicky I think you would enjoy it very much.

David Bennett

I quote this movie so much especially the beginning! “We’re in a tight spot” “I’m a dapper Dan man” and “well isn’t this a geographical oddity? Two weeks from everywhere” are the ones I quote the most. I also name every frog and toad i find Pete
