Chernobyl - Episode 2 | Full Length Reaction!

Comments

"Why did I see graphite on the roof?" That's the moment when Boris starts to think for himself and becomes a good guy.

Thomas Williamson

You have to remember, when they asked "should we be worried" in the bar. He said "NO" because he knows about the KGB, and the law about state secrets could mean an execution. He wanted to say "yes get out of here" but he couldnt.

To me the science behind the whole disaster is fascinating, and I think it's great to nerd out! That said, it is almost secondary to this happening in the context of the former Soviet Union and a communist government and bureaucracy that is used to its citizens falling into line, and desperately trying to save face. If this disaster had happened in the West, would the impact have been the same? Yes, people will point fingers as they always do, and we'll never know if the fallout (no pun intended) would have been similar. Just something I have thought about in this current age of fake news and disinformation.

It definitely gets more rough as it goes on..... but it is so well made that it's hard to look away. I don't think people left their animals so much as they were told to leave them unfortunately. An interesting fact about the music done by Hildur Guðnadóttir(also did "Joker"); she recorded sounds from inside a working nuclear power plant and incorporated them into the score. Brilliant work on her part.

Its not surprising to me that you are already so invested in this story. When I watched this, I couldn't just end it on a cliffhanger like that. I'm...genuinely concerned for you though, when we get to Episode 4. It's similar to the infamous Episode 9 in Band of Brothers. Given you're reaction to certain things already, this might be the hardest thing you've ever watched. If you are able, perhaps you shouldn't watch that one alone. I'm sure lots of others who've watched and commented have hinted at this already. Out of genuine concern for your mental health and wonderful spirit, I just wanted you to know. Give you some time to prepare.

One the three men at the end died of a heart attack in 2005 and the other two are still alive today.

To my mind, there has been a worrying degree of assumption on the part of many people reacting to this series in terms of the attempts to save face being peculiar to the Soviet systems and ideology. For what it's worth, working in Western businesses for over 20 years I have repeatedly witnessed middle managers throwing their subordinates under the bus when trying to cover for mistakes they made. It's impossible to deny that Bryukhanov cut corners in terms of safety when building the plant, however it's equally impossible to deny that the reason he did so was because he was being asked to achieve the impossible in terms of meeting the requirements demanded of him by his superiors.

Yep, hardly anyone remembers the animals in their plans to evacuate. This happens in most disasters. It happens in the US anytime there's a hurricane for instance. Heed the warning others have given. Episode 4 is going to be really hard to get through. Prepare yourself.

Not to get too into current Politics, but you know by first hand how well the world is at listening to scientists with how this pandemic has gone. The reason why chernobyl was so bad, is because the people who where in charge refused to believe it was as bad as it was because they had been conditioned to believe that their country could do nothing wrong. At least from my limited opinion. They also didn't warn neighboring countries because they didn't want to admit to their failure. The leak was so bad no one was prepared for what happened. No one had gone through this kind of event before and they were so ill prepared.

That old man you were commenting on is the old guy from the first episide that talked them all out of evacuating then there he is being put on a bus with the rest. The helicopter that crashed struck the construction crane. Hit the cable and it broke the rotor blades.

I agree with Jake, based on your reaction on events in this episode I think you are going to struggle with EP 4. Keep it up though, I really like your reaction on this series so far, you have a unique perspective others don't as you already researched the event.

Kylrad

Just gonna give you a pre warning to prepare the tissues for EP 4
