The Martian [Extended Edition] | Full Length Reaction!

HEY GUYS! Sorry for not posting.. i had some technical problems on our end where we couldn't render videos but.... problem is FIXED but then thanksgiving came around... BUT HOPE YOU GUYS HAD A GREAT THANKSGIVING!🥰🥰 I will be making a thanks post very soon ;) other than that,

This is the extended edition by the way! (Go hard or go home am i right lmfao)

The Martian was by far, one of my favorite films I have ever seen. It made you laugh, cry (happy tears and tears of fear), jump and tense up beyond belief. It kept you at the edge of you seat all while staying fairly scientifically accurate and having a great comedic side to it. It was so incredibly fun to watch and I enjoyed every single second of it. I tried my hardest to keep my inner nerd in check for your sake so let me know if you liked this type of reaction!! I hope you guys didn't have to deal with my random passionate teary eyed moments and emotion throughout the movie TOO badly LOL  Thank you so much. I hope you all enjoy as much as I did <3

The commentary was SO good! Know I'm years late. Watching this n that, here n there. I KNEW this one would have me crying! It's just so well done and touching. V's commentary again took something I enjoy and made it better. As always thank you for putting so much effort into production to get it on YT. It's been my go-to when having rough days. They're fewer & farther between, but still happen.

Well, it’s definitely her personality and vibe that’s very likable, and her timing is perfect. But there’s probably something bigger darker behind this new “thing”, like Blade Runner 2049, or Her, one girl for hundreds of men.

E

It started well before that. Remember the terrible Transformers Age of Extinction. How it at the end of the movie suddenly started a second movie taking place in Honk Kong. And the year after in Age of Ultron where suddenly Claudia Kim appears as a Chinese doctor with a speaking role, despite never having been seen before in the MCU. Actually the MCU is good at it. Scrubbing The Ancient One's Tibetan background from Dr Strange, and getting rid of The Mandarin as a Chinese villain. It's probably been going on for far long than that, but those are just the ones that spring to mind.

LudicDave

Why is it so much fun to watch movies with her?? 😂 It's probably cause I always commentate on movies while watching too so it feels natural 😂

Hyrum Jackson

No way Chinese government would allow this! This is around the time there was a change in Hollywood and they started pandering to China. I think it started w that Matt Damon Chinese wall movie.

E

I agree that Apollo 13 and this film have many similarities. Both great!

James M

100% agreed the score is one of my all time favorites I have it on vinyl

Matt

Now that's a great movie. I will defend Ryan Gosling as an actor because you can feel his emotions even while he forces himself to appear stern and stoic. Beautiful camera work, and beautiful score. I also love the small bit of fiction they wrote for it. It is honestly almost too beautiful of an idea.

panacamanana

I recommend First Man 2018

Matt

I think a big part of the success of the novel was that the manner of publishing was similar to the video posts Watney makes, and that he made it so available. "Having been rebuffed by literary agents when trying to get prior books published, Weir decided to put the book online in serial format one chapter at a time for free at his website. At the request of fans, he made an Amazon Kindle version available at 99 cents (the minimum allowable price he could set).[9] The Kindle edition rose to the top of Amazon's list of best-selling science-fiction titles, selling 35,000 copies in three months, more than had been previously downloaded free."

Never understood the love for this film. The comedy didn't grab me at all. It doesn't take itself serious at all. And the ending of the movie is so far fetched that it's bullshit. This movie treats most of the threats with a level of realism and then the realism goes right out the window with his "iron man" bullshit. But I'm glad you had fun with this movie.

panacamanana

Lol oh yeah and Dune 2021!

Flukemarm

After being featured in Lawrence of Arabia, the Wadi Rum area of Jordan has been used as iconic landscape in several movies. Not only was it used for the Martian terrain in the Martian, it was also the desert planet in Rise of Skywalker!

Flukemarm

That's great you somehow didn't et spoiled as to the plot of this movie. Your waves of anxiety at the realization was very entertaining!

"Wait... 'The Martian'... could they possibly be referring to Mars as the planet?" Um, yes. The word "Martian" refers to things and/or people from the planet Mars (and sometimes Utah.)

Thomas Yanez

This is one of my favorite movies in the past twenty years. Thanks for sharing your reaction with us.

Of the hard or “reality based” sci-fi movies that came out in the early 2010s , Gravity, Interstellar and this (I.e. sci-fi that isn’t basically fantasy in space, albeit Interstellar is a borderline example), this is definitely my favorite. Mark’s humor carries the day; while he may naturally be that way, I think he was leaning a bit more into it all through this as a coping mechanism. That and keeping busy finding ways to survive, or completing the mission. Keeps him from dwelling on how hopeless his situation seems at times. Did you notice Vincent was the same guy as the Operative who was after River in Serenity? He’s also a Marvel alumnus, though you won’t be seeing him for a while. Among the rest of the cast there are no less than three other Marvel alumni. You’ve seen Kate Mara (I’m counting her even though her role was only a couple of minutes in Iron Man 2), and the rest you’ll be seeing as you progress through the MCU. This is my first time seeing the extended version, and for the most part I appreciate the additions. the one I think they could have done without was the one right after Vincent’s press conference with him and Annie. It just seemed redundant (even though we do find out more about Annie), and the transition to the original scene seemed a bit clumsy to me.

Proud you got the "Elrond" reference but did you notice it was Mitch Henderson AKA Boromir (Sean Bean) who explained the Elrond reference to the NASA team?

Stephen Benner

I agree with Zachary. Apollo 13 should be on your list. A true story that can give you the same emotions as The Martian. Well, maybe not the comedy unless you look at the styles of the 1960's.

Bob Criswell

I'd really love for you to watch Apollo 13. It's a lot like this movie, except it really happened.

Zachary Carter

Such a great movie to rewatch with your amazing reaction, as a massive space fan I really enjoyed you geeking out during the film. I love space and space exploration so this movie was instantly one of my favorites when it came out, really glad you enjoyed it! Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Wow I didn't even know there was an extended edition, looking forward to this!

Uthacalthing

Learning about the universe and the space programs is a passion of mine too and always will be and it was thanks to movies like "October Sky" that drove me to be curious. That movie is one one of my favs next to this one. Until the next one Vicky <3

THIS GAVE ME SO MUCH LIFE. This is also one of my favorite films. I was gifted the book probably 10 years ago one Christmas and spent the rest of the next couple days binge-reading it- I was so enthralled by the story (exceptional book and well worth the read even having already seen the film). When I heard they were doing a film adaption I was a little concerned it wouldn't live up to the standards of the book. Luckily, I was wrong.

Brandon Ralphs

Thank you for reacting to this one Vicki! It's one of my favorites as well, as I also always wanted to be an astronaut (glasses and epilepsy diagnosed when I was 18 stopped that, but oh well!). You are obviously a geeking out on the science here, so I strongly encourage you to read the novel that this film was based on! The screenplay was excellent, but the novel is able to go into so much more detail, and a lot of great scenes had to be cut for time purposes. It's one of my Top 5 novels of all time. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Sean Novack

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you and it's fine that you solved your technical problems right in time before the weekend. Fortunately it were just technical problems and no illness or something worse. 🙃 I'm looking forward to watch your review later. 🤗 Currently it's shortly after 9 here, so I've just started working 2 hours ago, but it's nice to know a wonderful review waiting and also it's friday, the best (work)day of the week. 😊 Edit: Now after a few internet problems I've watched your full reaction and the movie and I can just say, I loved your reaction. When I suggested to watch this movie I was really very sure that you will like it very much and that the landscape shots alone would overwhelm you. But also the storyline, the acting, the science (even if it's very much simplified compared to the book) and of course the soundtrack. I'm so glad that you loved that movie and from my point of view it's one of the best, if not the best movie of the last ten years. I for myself am also very interested in astronomy, space, science and all of it and of course it is a dream to put a foot on Mars at some time. But well, it will take a few more years until at all the first human will be there. Back to the movie. 🤗 There are some scenes that get you pretty pensive but with the next scene Mark/the audience gets back to action/attention, so you dont get too lost in thoughts. And (for Mark) the old saying applies - work distracts from pondering too much. 😁 In my opinion this is phenomenal and outstanding acting by Matt Damon because most of the film he is alone and interacts just with the camera/audience. The choice of music also plays a very important role. The change between the quite and sensual main theme and the "disco" tracks is always on point. The songs are selected very well and very suitable for the different scenes. Last but not least I can only recommend you to read the book (of course after The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings 😁) because it's really written great. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and a reallyy nice time even if there were the render problems. 😊

Chris Lüders

Happy Thanksgiving and amazing review! The Martian is one of top five favorite books. I got my degree in physics and work as a programmer and because of that the book was right up my alley. The book is way more technical and did a much deeper dive into the science involved. In fact, it mostly focused on the engineering and science involved in how he survived(the author was an engineer & programmer). I was obsessed with the book when I read it(twice) and remember when they announced they were making a movie. I didn't know how they could ever make a movie from it because they wouldn't have been able to translate it unless it was more like a documentary. But... because I love Matt Damon (and because the company I work at bought everyone tickets), I watched it and loved it! The movie follows the plot but looks at it in a different, but kind of perfect way. They are beautiful companions to each other in my opinion. Your reaction, and specifically your optimism(except, strangely the end) was infectious even thought I knew how it was going to end and made the watching that much more enjoyable! This may be in my top 3 or 4 reactions from you. Thank you! And, if you get the chance, read the book. It's a perfect companion piece that really does a deeper dive into the science\engineering involved. It's really good imo.

MattN

This is my personal favorite movie of all time! Ridley Scott and Matt Damon made a perfect adaptation together from the book.

Calvin Kopp

I haven't seen this movie so I'll get to watch it for the first time as well, yay!
