I commend you Say. So many points were brought up I don't even know where to begin so firstly; thank you, I LOVE reading all this insight and learning all these new things. It helps bring a depth not seen before to these films which I can truly appreciate. I can see how Miyazaki's settings have definitely shifted over time (in your first comment) and the way you describe it and why I found to be done very well. One thing I would have loved more from this film was exactly what you brought up - the depth and more elaboration on the world. If you're saying the manga contains more philosophy behind human nature and morality along with a deeper plot and focus on the world he created - that definitely interests me. I need to see where I can get it! I felt a little bad that I didn't elaborate more on the topic of man vs nature in this film but I felt as though I would be rambling on forever, but I'm happy to be here discussing it with you! I love this insight. AND AW THATS WHY HER DRESS TURNED BLUE?? I couldn't contain myself seeing the baby like that, that makes it even more heartbreaking. :( and the depth behind Miyazaki and the inspiration for each portion of his films is insanely interesting and just... thought provoking. With all that pain he took, he proceeded to create some of the most beautiful works of art and I find that extremely uplifting and inspiring. I'm so glad you enjoyed the reaction, and I enjoyed (BOTH) :) of your analysis. I'm not sure why it got deleted and I'm sorry you had to rewrite everything, but I'm glad I have both comments now ❤️

You're absolutely correct on the WWII-ish vibes, Miyazaki grew up during the late periods of the Pacific War so he's both incredibly inspired by (especially his love of planes and flight) and holds strong distaste towards wars. He claims he's very paradoxical in that regard, to love a tool of war (because the planes he grew up watching definitely were war-planes, some even used for the infamous Kamikaze attacks) despite his aversion to warfare. The Wind Rises, from what I heard, is his self-commentary on the issue. Now that I mention it, this childhood of his also heavily influenced his antagonists; having lived through such harsh periods Miyazaki learned early on that human motivations can be very complicated and even good people are capable of evil and cruelty -- as such, most of his antagonists are complex people. Eboshi was, and so is Kshana... the only irredeemably evil villain I can think of right off the bat is the antagonist for Castle in the Sky, and you'll see what I mean then. But most of the time, good and evil really doesn't really cover the what's going on. The Pejitans and Toulmerians both do atrocious things, some out of misguided righteousness (Kshana) and some out of vengeance and survival (Pejitans). But it would be hypocritical of us to say that they should just sort their problems out. Whatever pain and desperation we feel in this world wouldn't compare to those felt in times of war, of countries overthrown and enslaved, of daily death and survival. It's hard to see what's right, and even harder to do that; Miyazaki's protagonists still however does not waver and try so hard, as if he's asking us whether we would be able to do the same should we be in the same world, of hate and desperation and rage. (One of Miyazaki's earliest memories is his family leaving behind a pleading mother with a baby as they fled from an incoming attack; Miyazaki was not able to tell his parents to help the woman back then, and the memory plagued him through his childhood. Later he decided he would create children protagonists who, unlike him, would have been able to say that.) It's very thought-provoking, to say the very least. On another note: Nausicaa's dress got dyed blue when she was trying to subdue the baby Ohm. The bugs' bloods are blue... the poor baby :( Oh, and you should really, REALLY check out the manga version of Nausicaa! I think I said it somewhere before, but it goes way beyond the movie's plot and themes, and shows much more of this world Miyazaki envisioned. The movie covers only about a third of its plot, and the manga than takes a sideturn and explores far more philosophical questions about life, the nature of humanity, and what is right. You can buy it or there are probably (ehem) priate versions of it in the web somewhere... I really do recommend it, Nausicaa as a movie is great but the real story goes way beyond that. I'd like, sign up to a (currently nonexistent) higher patreon tier just to see your review of it lol. Not many people do know about the manga series, and it's such a shame... Anyways, loved the reaction! I'll watch Cowboy Bebop next. I actually haven't watched that show despite me being somewhat of a classicist anime-viewer, so I'm super pumped about it!
