Luminous Chronicles - Chapter 9

Chapter 9

Andar gritted his teeth as he trudged through the Forest of Whispering Shadows, Sasha's limp body slung over his back. The dense canopy above cast an eternal twilight, with luminous ferns providing the only light. Each step felt heavier than the last, the soft bed of moss and leaves cushioning his footfalls but offering no reprieve from the weight of his burden.

The whispers of the trees seemed to follow him, their ethereal voices a constant reminder of the forest's ancient spirits. "Stay focused," he muttered to himself, his breath visible in the cool mist that enveloped them.

As he walked, memories from his past surfaced unbidden. He thought back to his time as a knight, when life had seemed so much simpler. The clang of steel on steel, the roar of battle—those had been his world. And then he had seen her for the first time.

It was during a skirmish on the Plains of Eternity. The forces of light were struggling against a horde of Inferno Drakes and shadow fiends. Just when all seemed lost, Emilia appeared like an avenging angel. Her raven-black hair flowed behind her like a dark river, and her emerald eyes blazed with an intensity that took his breath away.

She raised her staff, its crystal pulsing with light, and with a single word, she summoned an inferno that incinerated the enemy ranks. The sheer power she wielded was awe-inspiring, a force of nature that turned the tide of battle in their favor. Andar had watched in stunned silence as she moved through the chaos with grace and lethal precision, her beauty only matched by her ruthlessness.

"Emilia," he whispered under his breath as he adjusted Sasha's weight on his shoulders.

Sasha stirred slightly at the sound of his voice, her eyelids fluttering open. "Andar?" she murmured weakly.

"I'm here," he replied softly, glancing over his shoulder at her pale face. "Just hold on."

The forest around them was a mix of eerie beauty and lurking danger. Whispering Willows swayed gently in an unseen breeze, their soft murmurs filling the air with ancient secrets. Enchanted Blossoms glowed faintly in the darkness, their fragrant scent warding off unseen threats.

"Andar," Sasha whispered again, her voice barely audible. "Thank you."

He smiled grimly as he pressed on. "Save your strength," he said gently. "We'll get through this."

"Andar," Sasha murmured again, her voice a fragile thread in the heavy air. "How do you think Emilia is doing?"

"She'll be alright," Andar reassured, though worry tugged at his heart. "There isn't another human stronger than her."

Sasha's lips curved into a faint smile. "You're right. She is... something else."

To keep Sasha conscious, Andar decided to share some of his stories from his days as a knight. "Let me tell you about the time my party raided a den of fire drakes," he began, adjusting her weight once more. "It was one of the toughest battles I've ever faced."

Sasha's eyes flickered with interest. "Fire drakes?"

"Yes," Andar continued, his voice steady. "We had received word that a group of fire drakes had taken up residence in the Mountains, causing havoc for the nearby villages. My party and I were tasked with driving them out."

He could still remember the heat and the stench of sulfur as they approached the den. The fire drakes were massive, their scales shimmering like molten metal in the dim light of their lair. The battle had been fierce from the start.

"We lost many good men that day," Andar said, his voice growing somber. "The drakes' fire breath was unlike anything we'd ever encountered. It melted steel like butter and turned flesh to ash in an instant."

Sasha listened intently, her eyes never leaving his face.

"We fought bravely," Andar continued, his jaw tightening at the memory. "But for every drake we took down, two more seemed to take its place. My friend Jorin... he saved my life more times than I can count during that battle."

He paused for a moment, lost in thought. Jorin's face flashed before his eyes—his easy grin, the way he always found humor even in dire situations.

"But in the end, we managed to drive them out," Andar said quietly. "We lost many, but those who survived honored our fallen comrades with a ceremony worthy of their bravery."

Sasha reached out weakly and touched his arm. "You're a good man, Andar."

He shook his head slightly. "I just did what I had to do," he replied softly. "We all did."

Sasha looked at him with those warm amber eyes that seemed to see right through him. "You remind me of Emilia," she said, her voice gentle but firm.

Andar's brow furrowed. "Emilia? How so?"

"She finds it difficult to trust people," Sasha explained, her fingers lightly tracing patterns on his arm. "She's been hurt before, and that makes her wary. She holds herself to impossibly high standards, which can make her come across as rude or even callous."

Andar thought about Emilia's fierce determination, the way she commanded respect and fear in equal measure. "I guess I never considered that," he admitted.

"She doesn't show it easily," Sasha continued. "But I can tell she likes you, in her own way."

Andar's eyes widened slightly in surprise. "Likes me? She barely knows me, and she thinks I'm useless."

Sasha smiled faintly, a hint of mischief in her eyes. "Oh, she knows more than you think. Emilia sees potential in you, Andar. She wouldn't have you as her second if she didn't believe in your capabilities."

He let out a breath he didn't realize he'd been holding. "It's just... hard sometimes. The way she treats me—"

"I know," Sasha interrupted softly, her voice tinged with empathy. "Her methods are harsh, but they come from a place of necessity and expectation. She can't afford to be lenient when so much is at stake."

Andar looked down at Sasha, appreciating the way her presence seemed to ease the tension within him. "And you? How do you manage?"

Sasha chuckled softly. "I've been with Emilia for a long time. I've learned to see past the façade she puts up. Beneath it all, she's driven by a desire to protect those she cares about."

A silence settled between them, filled only by the whispers of the forest and the rhythmic sound of their breathing.

"I want to be worthy of her trust," Andar finally said, his voice filled with quiet determination.

Sasha squeezed his arm gently. "You already are, Andar. You just need to believe it yourself."

Their bond solidified in that moment, an unspoken understanding passing between them. Sasha had seen the goodness in him, the strength and loyalty that lay beneath the surface. They walked in companionable silence for a while longer until Sasha spoke again, her voice filled with a warmth that soothed his soul.

"Andar," she said softly, leaning closer to him as if sharing a secret, "I'm glad you're here with us."

The forest path narrowed ahead, blocked by a group of goblins. Their beady eyes gleamed with malice, and wicked grins spread across their faces as they spotted Andar and Sasha. Sasha's face paled as she recognized the threat.

"Andar, those goblins... they're known for capturing women," she whispered, panic lacing her voice. "They rape them until they die, forcing them to give birth to their offspring."

Andar's jaw tightened. He gently laid Sasha down against a moss-covered tree, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face. "Believe in me," he said firmly, his deep blue eyes locking onto hers. "I'll protect you."

He rose to his feet and unsheathed his sword, the blade gleaming coldly in the dim light. The goblins cackled and snarled, brandishing their crude weapons.

With a roar, the goblins charged. Andar stood his ground, his grip on the hilt of his sword tightening. The first goblin lunged at him, a rusty dagger aimed for his throat. Andar sidestepped smoothly, his sword slicing through the air with lethal precision. The goblin's head rolled off its shoulders before it even hit the ground.

Another goblin swung a spiked club at Andar's side. He parried the blow with ease, spinning around to deliver a powerful kick to the creature's chest. The goblin staggered back, and Andar's blade followed through with a swift thrust that pierced its heart.

Three more goblins surrounded him, their movements erratic but coordinated. Andar's training as a knight took over; he ducked beneath a wild swing, slashing upwards to disembowel one goblin while blocking another attack with his gauntlet-clad forearm.

A goblin leaped onto Andar's back, clawing at his neck. He grunted in pain but reached back to grab the creature by its greasy hair, yanking it forward and slamming it into the ground. His sword flashed once more, silencing its screeches forever.

Two goblins remained. One wielded a jagged spear while the other clutched a net made of twisted vines and bones. They circled him warily, clearly recognizing his prowess.

Andar feinted towards the spearman before pivoting sharply towards the net-wielder. The goblin tried to entangle him with its net, but Andar was faster. His sword cut through the air in a sweeping arc, severing both net and goblin in one fluid motion.

The final goblin hesitated for just a moment—long enough for Andar to close the distance between them. He drove his blade into its chest with a powerful thrust, twisting it to ensure a fatal blow.

Breathing heavily but unscathed, Andar stood among the fallen bodies of the goblins. He turned back to Sasha, who watched him with wide eyes filled with awe and relief.

"It's over," he said softly as he sheathed his sword and knelt beside her once more.

Sasha reached out to touch his arm, her fingers trembling slightly. "Thank you," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion.

Andar gave her a reassuring smile as he helped her back to her feet. "Let's keep moving," he said gently. "We still have to find Emilia."

Just as Andar reached down to pick Sasha up, a powerful force slammed him into a nearby tree. His back collided with the rough bark, and an invisible pressure pinned him there, rendering him immobile. He struggled, but it was as if iron bands had wrapped around his body.

A woman emerged from the shadows of the forest, her beauty ethereal and almost otherworldly. Her long, platinum blonde hair cascaded down her back, shimmering in the faint light of the luminous ferns. She was completely naked, her figure both alluring and intimidating.

She approached Sasha with a serene smile. "Poor child," she murmured, kneeling beside her and casting a healing spell. A soft glow enveloped Sasha, her wounds closing almost instantly.

Andar's eyes widened in confusion and fear as he tried to speak, but his mouth clamped shut under the force of her magic. The woman's gaze shifted to him, eyes narrowing with suspicion.

"What do we have here?" she said coldly. "A man assaulting a helpless woman in my forest?"

Andar's muffled attempts at speech went unheard as he strained against the invisible bindings.

"No! No!" Sasha cried out hurriedly, pushing herself up on shaky legs. "This is Andar! He's my mistress Emilia's second!"

The woman's eyes flickered with curiosity but did not soften. "Explain yourself," she commanded, her voice like silk over steel.

Sasha spoke quickly, her words tumbling over each other in her haste. "We got separated from our mistress during an attack by a dragon. Andar saved me from goblins just now—he wasn't hurting me!"

The woman's expression relaxed slightly as she turned back to Sasha. "Is that so?"

"Yes," Sasha affirmed, her voice steadier now. "He has been protecting me."

The woman straightened up and released Andar from her magical grip. He gasped for breath, rubbing his sore jaw as he stumbled forward.

"I apologize for the misunderstanding," she said softly, though her tone held a lingering wariness. "My name is Lilith."

Sasha's eyes widened in recognition. "Lilith... the enchantress seductress?"

Lilith inclined her head gracefully. "Indeed."

Andar stood beside Sasha, his gaze still wary but grateful for their unexpected ally. "Thank you for healing her," he managed to say, his voice hoarse from the strain.

Lilith smiled faintly, an enigmatic glint in her deep violet eyes. "You're welcome," she replied simply.

Nice to get some of Andar's backstory here and to see how effective he was as a knight - it gives a really nice depth to his decision to give that up to become a Second because of how inspiring Emilia was!)

Drake Breen

Thank you for letting Andar be strong, competent, courageous, and truly good. They are all qualities and character traits that I aspire to, as a "tween".

Alee

Andar is really becoming part of the family! I like how you dedicated some time to giving him some bacvkground

Nasty Nate

I'm loving these moments with Sasha and Andar. For Emilia to be so preoccupied I'm a little worried of what she may be handling. Once again thank you Mommy this has been so much writing in one day, you're truly brilliant at this.
