I think the intent of the virus is to wipe out intelligent life in the universe. Since the hive is not allowed to kill plants or animals for food, that presents a problem for them with the non-infected. The solution is for the hive to please the non-infected so that the non-infected don’t try to figure out a way to reverse the virus, like Carol is trying to do. Meanwhile, while the non-infected are content enough with their life, the hive can figure out a way to get the others to join (with or without their consent as long as they don’t harm them).

I think we can assume that the virus can and will infect non-humans, such as the lab rat in the first episode. On other worlds, the infected life form may not depend on consumed foodstuffs that require the killing of a living organism or plant. The Others may not have any objective other than to spread their hive mind across the galaxy. We have assumed that they have loftier goals because when they assume human form they can engage in seemingly intelligent conversation. It could be as simple as a 'bug' that cannot reproduce by any means other than infecting other life forms. Even in the human infected form, they do not engage in sexual reproduction of their hosts.

This is one of my favorite episodes. I love the character development of Mr. Diabate, he came off so skeezy in the beginning (and he kind of is) but he is much more complex.
The explanation of the food dilemma is so interesting, I totally get why they are eating people, it makes sense in a practical way, even though it won't help them survive in the end.
I also really love Manousos, his character is so riveting. He and Carol are well matched for stubbornness.
