The discussion about the truth reminds me of this episode of Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman where the kids' dad comes to visit with all these promises that he'd changed but he ended up robbing the church and running away, and Sully caught him, got the money back, let him go and then put the money back so no one would think it got stolen.
Sully came back and told the kids that his dad wrote 'em a letter, and read it to them. He had to go back to San Francisco coz one of his merchant ships was lost at sea and he had to save what he could of his business.
Matthew, the oldest, went over to Sully after he read the letter and away from the others, he said "You write good." Sully said "What?" Matthew said "My pa can't write." So then Matthew asked him, why didn't you just tell them the truth?
Sully replied "Well Matthew, sometimes the truth hurts worse."
And the whole thing was .. Sully always had all this wisdom he learned from the Indians and everything else.. And I think it's easy to get caught up in the truth is the most important thing..
I think it's a maturity thing.. Sometimes a lie is more the right thing to do, to safeguard someone's mental state. And Ellie's still a kid so she doesn't understand that, AND she also has the weight on her of what Joel did and lied to her about.
But I think that what he did was the right thing to do, but he should've never promised Ellie that, and he should've never like done it that way.
The way he did it with Ellie was completely wrong, not just lying to her. It was really sketchy like, and so obvious that he's sending her away so he can shoot him. LOL
He coulda sent her away so she didn't have to watch, but don't send her away on a rouse like you're gonna take him back to town.
