War Film Poll!

Help pick the War movie we will react to!

Please feel free to suggest other options in the comments for future polls!

*NOTE: I have seen Life is Beautiful so this would only be Sam's first time watching! Sam has seen The Pianist, so this would only be my first time watching!

Absolutely second this. Great movie!

Ashton Rice

It's not on your list, but American Sniper is an excellent war movie based on a true story, about Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, who was a Sniper who did 4 tours in Iraq.

James Lewis

Personally I think The Ascent by Larisa Shepito is the best WW2 film about the Eastern Front. Shepito was married to the director of Come and See.

Birdie Num Num

So many great movies on this list. You can't go wrong with any of them. Come and See is probably the one that is "if you see only one war movie in your life it should be this one" - but it really does show the reality of WW2 in Eastern Europe. Utterly brutal and terrifying. Enemy at the Gates is another great Eastern Front movie (as Americans we forget that WW2 was primarily about taking Russian and Ukraine, but those British wouldn't stop being a pain in the ass). Other must-see war movies to add to your lists - Gallipolli, Breaker Morant, the original All Quiet On The Western Front (1930), and The Killing Fields.

Neal Romanek

Another war movie to watch is Civil War (2024).

pete

I recommend The Killing Fields (1984)

Boris-N

Life Is Beautiful is an EXCELLENT film 🎞️πŸ₯Ή

Tristan Durant

And Richard Burton!

Miles E Coburn

Yeah, I've seen it on a number of "War Movie" polls of other reactors. But only a small part of the movie takes place during a war. I've never figured out why so many people think it's a "War Movie". Maybe because the one screen capture of the Redcoats is used in virtually every review / write-up of the movie.

Miles E Coburn

And, like most of Kubrick's films, it's a plodding, pretentious bore.

Miles E Coburn

Doctor Zhivago is in my all-time top ten. HOWEVER, I have to spoil something for your protection. There is a dead baby in it. It's not like TRAINSPOTTING. There is a woman holding what could be a ham or cheese wrapped up for we know. But it's meant to be a baby. You can't see it. So it's not traumatizing just sad. It's literally like one minute of long ass movie. I hope you do watch it someday tho. πŸ€—πŸ™πŸΌ

FYI, Barry Lyndon is the highest ranked film on this list from the Sight and Sound poll of the Greatest Films of All Time. It's the oldest and most highly regarded poll of that nature(has been held every 10 years since 1952). Lyndon is the 2nd highest rated Kubrick on the list(after 2001)

Birdie Num Num

Once The Game won the detective poll in a landslide, I think disqualifying any title based on whether it belongs in the poll went out the window. It certainly has more of a case as a war film(or war adjacent) than The Game has being anywhere near a detective movie poll.

Birdie Num Num

Casualties of War will always be my vote

Jonathan Patrick

I stand with James!

Toc

Paths of Glory all the way. Masterpiece..... and unlike most war movies, only an hour and a half! :P

Toc

Barry Lyndon is among my all time favorite movies but I wouldn't classify it as a war movie. Paths of Glory though, excellent film by a young Kubrick.

Boris-N

Dirty Dozen and Kellys Heroes are my Favorites here !!! I recommend for the next War Poll "Where Eagles Dare" from 1968 with Clint Eastwood

Florian Meier

I would strongly recommend M.A.S.H. as a war movie, mixing comedic themes with serious ones. I would also recommend 1941, pure comedy directed by Spielberg, with John Candy, Dan Ackroyd, John Belushi, Ned Beatty, Robert Stack, and more.

PaulChristopher

Plus, Donna Reed's in it with a role that won her an Oscar 😍

Paul Cox

It would have been nice to see "From Here to Eternity". The film that depicts the first attack on the United States, sending us to War with the World.

Chris Baldwin

"Life is Beautiful" is absolutely devastating and hilarious all at the same time. That movie is really a masterpiece of contradiction and just an amazing work of art.

Tenn Seven

I cant believe the Dirty Dozen is really winning this poll. Yes its a great war movie but in comparison to the rest of this list, I have to see its last, but thats just my opinion.

James

The Captain is another underrated and overlooked war film. True Story of a German officer who pretends to be a german captain to escape the war. Excellent movie!!!

James

The Pianist please!!!

James

Barry Lyndon isn't exactly a war movie (although, there's war in it), but you should definitely watch it! There may be movies as beautiful as Barry Lyndon, but there are no movies more beautiful than Barry Lyndon.

Michael Buhl

Hey, how about 'War of The World' with Tom Cruise. This isn't exactly a "war" movie like the ones on the list, however, it is a war with all humanity. Great movie!

Lou@Jersey

Hey, Sam and Daniel! I see you've had a lot of reading to do!

Lou@Jersey

Nice. 2 Stanley Kubrick films in one poll.

Robert Sackrider

Paths of Glory is tragically underrated.

Tyler Foster

Come and See is the big one on this list, but you'll see when you eventually get to it.

Jimmie V

agreed, really show the german perspective -- how their people were victims of the Nazis too!

Chris Bruneau

Downfall is SO good. One of my top 3 movies all time.

Corks

Not enough WWII movies from the 40’s! The Story of GI Joe, Twelve O’Clock High, and my favorite The Best Years of Our Lives. Consider some of them for your future polls.

Michael Soukup

I bring good news. They reacted to it about a year ago and it was a great reaction.

Marcus Cato

(1987) Empire of the Sun, is one of my favorites

Will Zamora

John DiGiantomasso

Alas, Come and See won't get enough love because not enough people have seen it. Truly one of, if not the best anti-war movie ever made. No heroism, no noble platitudes, no clichΓ©s. It shows war without romanticism or heroism worship. A must see flick

Smooticus

The Killing Fields isn't on the list but that's the one I saw most recently that stuck with me. Amazing story. Also recommend Funan, the animated film on the same topic.

Charlie Ito

Barry Lyndon is a must watch. But don't see it as a war movie, maybe man at war with himself

Will Zamora

The book was awesome to read. If you haven't read it, do so.

Athos Count de la Fère

Tough list. Wanted to vote for all of them, even the ones I don't really consider war movies (personal category restrictions)

Smooticus

All of you need to watch Paths of Glory. It would be winning in a landslide

Kevin Charley

Agreed

Athos Count de la Fère

And Kelly's Heroes

Smooticus

Would be surprised

Will Zamora

Ill go Dirty Dozen, since i think its more mainstream and has a better chance of winning, but Paths of Glory is a great movie as well.

Abel Salas Jr @jorel34

Casualties of War is an incredibly powerful film & is based on a true story, but it's NOT an easy watch.

Charles Gaba

Doctor Zhivago and Tora Tora Tora are fantastic!! But then again, I think every movie on this list is amazing.

Scott Kerr

Let's have a "fun" war movie! The Dirty Dozen

Athos Count de la Fère

I first watched The Pianist on a bus in the Czech Republic
