Comments

Major League 2.

Jeremy Charlie

Invictus (2009) (Matt Damon, Morgan Freemann, directed by Clint Eastwood); rugby Goon (2011) hillarious hockey movie Rush (2013) f1-racing

DracJeriba

The Hustler and The Natural are almost companion pieces. Paul Newman in one, Robert Redford in the other, and both about what can happen to young talents. But one is gritty reality, the other is epic mythmaking. Just one more cool connection between the careers of these two amazing movie star friends.

Neal Romanek

Borat for the 'Running of the Jews' sport!

Aaron Barlow

Searching for Bobby Fischer is better

Aaron Barlow

Wrong. If it has an Olympiad, world champs like Chess does, involves physical exertion and skill, it's a sport. Chess is physically exhausting believe it or not. Magnus Carlsen works out a lot to stay in shape for the long, exhausting chess tournaments.

Aaron Barlow

It's a sport. They have the chess olympiad, the world championship etc. I mean a sport is defined as "an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment." Chess is exhausting physically. As someone who has competed in a few chess tournaments, I know the concentration and mental stress leaves you feeling a bit drained. Magnus Carlsen the best player in the world for some time now and possibly the GOAT exercises regularly and says it's vital to be physically fit in long classical matches.

Aaron Barlow

Suspect in which way Oh like Bull Durham is really a love story

Pacmule

Ron Shelton + Kevin Costner: Bull Durham + Tin Cup!

james repka

I went with Caddyshack because it’s hilarious. I also know Daniel will love it because it’s an 80’s comedy with boobs.😉😁

Mark M

I saw his interview with Rich Eisen, but I imagine he spoke with several outlets. Not having ever read the book, I was hella surprised to find out about one very key difference between the book and the film. Sometimes "Hollywoodization" is a benefit.

Paul Cox

Caddyshack has been an entrant in several different genre and decade polls and has never won, thankfully, but now it might and I hate that for us.

Paul Cox

Along with "The Four Musketeers" (1974).

Miles E Coburn

Not a Sports movie.

Miles E Coburn

It would have been better to have it on a Comedy poll.

Miles E Coburn

Really? Golf - "Caddyshack" (1980) and "Tin Cup" (1996), Pool - "The Hustler" (1961), and Chess - "Searching for Bobby Fischer" (1993)? No matter what ESPN tries to tell us, Golf, Pool, Chess, Darts, etc. ARE NOT SPORTS.

Miles E Coburn

I'm sitting here trying to to think of a baseball or basketball movie to recommend and thinking of sports and drama all I came up with were actual games. 🤣 Anyhoo, I am in between going to the figure skating world championships in Boston. So I'll recommend ice skating movies, ICE CASTLES (1978), BLADES OF GLORY, THE CUTTING EDGE, and I, TONYA. 🙏🏼

Antmovies

Anyone not voting for RUDY is suspect. I get that the CADDYSHACK people are a bunch of goofballs but still. 🤭

Antmovies

That show was fantastic. However, even though the character was female, that doesn't determine the gender of the audience. Still, no doubt it created some more interest in the female viewership in chess, but the appeal was largely driven by the fact that it was a female prodigy and the marketing was quite prominent on Netflix. Mpst women/girls would be there for the drama rather than being chess enthusiasts, as her life was quite dramatic.

Aaron Barlow

Rudy

Jonathan Patrick

The Natural resurrected the baseball movie. Barry Levinson just talked about that this week while promoting his new film (how reluctant the studio was to make it because it was thought to be a dead genre). Without The Natural there would be no Field of Dreams, Major League, Bull Durham etc.

Birdie Num Num

The Queen's Gambit was one of the highest rated shows in the history of Netflix. It's about a female chess prodigy.

Birdie Num Num

Diego Maradona, documentary from 2019.

Boris-N

Great poll! For next sports poll, may I add two eventual musts? "The Bad News Bears" (1976) and "Rollerball" (1975)!!!! Love the choices on this poll, though!

Toc

Hoosiers,The Hustler, The Natural and Slap Shot are my favorites Here !!! I Recommend "Downhill Racer" from 1969 and "The Replacements" from 2000 (Both Gene Hackman)

Florian Meier

Also Patreon subscribers to Youtube reactors tend to be female in the majority so chess is less popular amongst the female base.

Aaron Barlow

The longest yard with Sandler is good too.

Aaron Barlow

Not really niche but the majority don't play, especially regularly.

Aaron Barlow

"Here, let me help you.." Substitute teacher style sweeps everything off desk.

Aaron Barlow

The star of Chariots of Fire is the musical score by Vangelis. The film itself is dry af. Would love for this to be the time The Natural finally wins one. Looks neck and neck with *sigh* Caddyshack. Hoosiers, Slap Shot, Rudy, or Tin Cup would be my other hopefuls.

Paul Cox

I dunno, it was pretty well-known and highly regarded in the 90s. Whether people remember that or not depends on the average age of the patrons here, I guess. Chess is in no way niche, btw.

Paul Cox

"Don't move until you see it."

Tenn Seven

It got mine

Yann Laliberté

I don't consider Searching for Bobby Fischer to be a sports movie. A great movie for sure though.

Yann Laliberté

Searching for Bobby Fischer is a beautiful movie.

Adam Sandler version is great.

Aaron Barlow

Add (The Greatest Game Ever Played) to the next sports poll. A hidden gem.

Tray-T

'Baseketball' should be on here! It's made by and starring Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of South Park. Thus naturally, it's very funny.

Aaron Barlow

Love and Basketball! Such an underappreciated movie, and one of my all-time fave sports and rom-com movies.

Jorge Lopez

Searching for Bobby Fischer is a fantastic film! I bet it flew under the radar of most people and won't get any votes. And it's about chess, and most people here probably don't even know what the pieces are called.

Aaron Barlow

Hoosiers!!

James

Best of Times 1986. Robin Williams and Kurt Russell. It's so fun and overlooked.

Ray Johnson

I have seen most of these. Chariots of Fire, except the one opening scene with the great Vangelis music, is not very good at all. The most fun is Caddyshack. Rudy is a great movie, one of the few that captures college football. But the best sports movie of them all is The Bad News Bears (1976).

thansen

Rudy, Rudy, Rudy, RUDY...

Brandon Royce

"White Men Can't Jump" is definitely a classic must-watch. I hope it wins one of these days. Haha.

EdmanXERO

I'm guessing you guys have already seen The Replacements (2000). I never see it on any sports polls. Lol

ShadowVessel π

Hah! The teenage version of myself was definitely that. Time has worn away that version of me.

Athos Count de la Fère

So you were a goon

Smooticus

My screen name is in honor of one of my favorite actors, Oliver Reed. Three Musketeers and the Four Musketeers. Love them both.

Athos Count de la Fère

Movies to add to the next poll; The Longest Yard 1974 Rollerball 1975

Athos Count de la Fère

North Dallas Forty is a great underrated sports film. Fun fact: the NFL tried to prevent its release because a lot of it seemed too close to the truth.

Connor Brennan

Thats fair, not enough reaction channels react to it, it does great numbers

dieselbeast

Great movie but kind of a tough watch for me since I grew up watching the Von Erichs

Smooticus

Right? BTW, your screen name reminds me I need to push for the '73 version of the Three Musketeers with Michael York et al

Smooticus

I'm just glad it's on their radar. Ive only seen ONE reaction to it and it's such a good film.

Donna Castellano

Agree. Gotta be the original, not the remake.

Athos Count de la Fère

Great choices. Although i notice The Longest Yard (1974) is missing. I expect that discrepancy to be corrected on the next poll ;)

Smooticus

Iron Claw (2023) starring Zac Efron for a future poll, I have shitty luck so there's no point in trying the monthly drawing lol it's not happening lol

dieselbeast

I had to give it a vote

Smooticus

The Natural is a ten year old's fantasy in cinema form. Great schmalzy fun. Bull Durham is a hoot. Had to give some love to Chariots of Fire. It's an incredibly well made movie, and had to give a special vote to Searching for Bobby Fischer. A nice little gem of a movie

Smooticus

You forgot The Bad News Bears and North Dallas Forty.

John Fitzpatrick

There's a few good ones on here, but Robert Redford in The Natural I think you guys would really like.

CJ

The Hustler is a great film. My sentimental favorite is Slap Shot. Lol, that's how I played hockey in school.

Athos Count de la Fère

RUDY!! your reactions would be fantastic on this one!!!

Tinker

I love Searching for Bobby Fischer, but chess isn't a sport -- it's a game. As is pool/billiards.

David Martin

That pole was hard to vote for lol. Every one of them solid

Roy Wright

You can’t go wrong with any of these

Kurt Bohnstadt

Caddyshack, varsity blues, coach Carter, Hoosiers In that order
