2025-04-08 08:56:36 +0000 UTCThe Hustler and The Natural are almost companion pieces. Paul Newman in one, Robert Redford in the other, and both about what can happen to young talents. But one is gritty reality, the other is epic mythmaking. Just one more cool connection between the careers of these two amazing movie star friends.

2025-03-30 05:31:42 +0000 UTCWrong. If it has an Olympiad, world champs like Chess does, involves physical exertion and skill, it's a sport. Chess is physically exhausting believe it or not. Magnus Carlsen works out a lot to stay in shape for the long, exhausting chess tournaments.
Aaron Barlow
2025-03-30 05:30:55 +0000 UTCIt's a sport. They have the chess olympiad, the world championship etc. I mean a sport is defined as "an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment." Chess is exhausting physically. As someone who has competed in a few chess tournaments, I know the concentration and mental stress leaves you feeling a bit drained. Magnus Carlsen the best player in the world for some time now and possibly the GOAT exercises regularly and says it's vital to be physically fit in long classical matches.

2025-03-29 15:22:58 +0000 UTCI went with Caddyshack because it’s hilarious. I also know Daniel will love it because it’s an 80’s comedy with boobs.😉😁

2025-03-29 15:06:30 +0000 UTCI saw his interview with Rich Eisen, but I imagine he spoke with several outlets. Not having ever read the book, I was hella surprised to find out about one very key difference between the book and the film. Sometimes "Hollywoodization" is a benefit.

2025-03-29 14:29:13 +0000 UTCCaddyshack has been an entrant in several different genre and decade polls and has never won, thankfully, but now it might and I hate that for us.
Paul Cox
2025-03-29 14:08:37 +0000 UTCAlong with "The Four Musketeers" (1974).
Miles E Coburn
2025-03-29 13:47:56 +0000 UTCNot a Sports movie.
Miles E Coburn
2025-03-29 13:46:23 +0000 UTCIt would have been better to have it on a Comedy poll.
Miles E Coburn
2025-03-29 13:44:25 +0000 UTCReally? Golf - "Caddyshack" (1980) and "Tin Cup" (1996), Pool - "The Hustler" (1961), and Chess - "Searching for Bobby Fischer" (1993)? No matter what ESPN tries to tell us, Golf, Pool, Chess, Darts, etc. ARE NOT SPORTS.
Miles E Coburn
2025-03-29 13:42:35 +0000 UTCI'm sitting here trying to to think of a baseball or basketball movie to recommend and thinking of sports and drama all I came up with were actual games. 🤣 Anyhoo, I am in between going to the figure skating world championships in Boston. So I'll recommend ice skating movies, ICE CASTLES (1978), BLADES OF GLORY, THE CUTTING EDGE, and I, TONYA. 🙏🏼
Antmovies
2025-03-29 13:31:35 +0000 UTCAnyone not voting for RUDY is suspect. I get that the CADDYSHACK people are a bunch of goofballs but still. 🤭

2025-03-29 13:21:05 +0000 UTCThat show was fantastic. However, even though the character was female, that doesn't determine the gender of the audience. Still, no doubt it created some more interest in the female viewership in chess, but the appeal was largely driven by the fact that it was a female prodigy and the marketing was quite prominent on Netflix. Mpst women/girls would be there for the drama rather than being chess enthusiasts, as her life was quite dramatic.

2025-03-29 09:11:38 +0000 UTCThe Natural resurrected the baseball movie. Barry Levinson just talked about that this week while promoting his new film (how reluctant the studio was to make it because it was thought to be a dead genre). Without The Natural there would be no Field of Dreams, Major League, Bull Durham etc.
Birdie Num Num
2025-03-29 09:10:00 +0000 UTCThe Queen's Gambit was one of the highest rated shows in the history of Netflix. It's about a female chess prodigy.

2025-03-29 08:10:06 +0000 UTCGreat poll! For next sports poll, may I add two eventual musts? "The Bad News Bears" (1976) and "Rollerball" (1975)!!!! Love the choices on this poll, though!

2025-03-29 08:05:26 +0000 UTCHoosiers,The Hustler, The Natural and Slap Shot are my favorites Here !!! I Recommend "Downhill Racer" from 1969 and "The Replacements" from 2000 (Both Gene Hackman)

2025-03-29 06:11:40 +0000 UTCAlso Patreon subscribers to Youtube reactors tend to be female in the majority so chess is less popular amongst the female base.

2025-03-29 05:12:19 +0000 UTCThe longest yard with Sandler is good too.

2025-03-29 05:06:23 +0000 UTCThe star of Chariots of Fire is the musical score by Vangelis. The film itself is dry af. Would love for this to be the time The Natural finally wins one. Looks neck and neck with *sigh* Caddyshack. Hoosiers, Slap Shot, Rudy, or Tin Cup would be my other hopefuls.
Paul Cox
2025-03-29 04:16:58 +0000 UTCI dunno, it was pretty well-known and highly regarded in the 90s. Whether people remember that or not depends on the average age of the patrons here, I guess. Chess is in no way niche, btw.

2025-03-29 03:21:32 +0000 UTC'Baseketball' should be on here! It's made by and starring Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of South Park. Thus naturally, it's very funny.

2025-03-29 03:21:10 +0000 UTCSearching for Bobby Fischer is a fantastic film! I bet it flew under the radar of most people and won't get any votes. And it's about chess, and most people here probably don't even know what the pieces are called.

2025-03-29 02:39:38 +0000 UTCBest of Times 1986. Robin Williams and Kurt Russell. It's so fun and overlooked.

2025-03-29 02:22:29 +0000 UTCI have seen most of these. Chariots of Fire, except the one opening scene with the great Vangelis music, is not very good at all. The most fun is Caddyshack. Rudy is a great movie, one of the few that captures college football. But the best sports movie of them all is The Bad News Bears (1976).

2025-03-29 01:26:54 +0000 UTCNorth Dallas Forty is a great underrated sports film. Fun fact: the NFL tried to prevent its release because a lot of it seemed too close to the truth.

2025-03-29 01:02:14 +0000 UTCThe Natural is a ten year old's fantasy in cinema form. Great schmalzy fun. Bull Durham is a hoot. Had to give some love to Chariots of Fire. It's an incredibly well made movie, and had to give a special vote to Searching for Bobby Fischer. A nice little gem of a movie
