Dustin Hoffman: Straight Time (1978) A great crime movie & Marathon Man (1976) from the same screenwriter as All the President's Men - It also has one of the scariest scenes in movie history.

"Zodiac" (2007) has a similar investigative style - a worthwhile watch.

I forget the exact line, but at one point in the movie they mention something about a puzzle or something and they should send it to the San Francisco Chronicle. A pretty subtle reference to the Chronicle being well known at the time for writing about the Zodiac murders. Which reminds me... you guys should watch Zodiac asap. 😉

You guys should watch Dick. Its a comedy spoof of Watergate. Will Ferrell plays Bob Woodward. Its very funny. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_(film)

Woodward did confirm that Deep Throat was Felt. but only after Felt made his confession...

I have read EVERYTHING I can get my hands on about Watergate, and if you REALLY want a deep dive, Garrett Graff's book on the subject is absolutely brilliant, and honestly super clear.
Fun fact that Graff exposes in his book: the Nixon White House knew that Deep Throat was Mark Felt almost immediately.
Felt was the Deputy Director of the FBI at the time -- he was the #2 man at the FBI -- second in command. He was J. Edgar Hoover's designated successor when Hoover died. Nixon, however, wanted his own man to run the FBI and didn't trust Felt's independence. Felt thought he'd been slighted by Nixon and was disgruntled; he knew that Nixon and Haldeman wanted him to just resign and retire -- and so that was Felt's axe to grind, and why he was a willing informant. And Haldeman guessed it was him within a week or two and basically cut Felt out of the information loop at FBI going forward.
It helped that things that Felt and Woodward did know one another before Watergate. They'd met by chance in a waiting room at the White House when Woodward was a navy aide and delivering documents. A month before the Watergate break-in, Woodward -- who had been covering boring local stories for the Post -- was contacted by Felt after a guy named Arthur Bremer had shot and wounded independent, segregationist presidential candidate George Wallace. The FBI was concerned in an election year that both Democrats and Republicans would be eager to claim that Bremer was a member of the other party; Felt and the FBI were worried it could lead to more political violence, and their investigation had shown that in reality Bremer was just a mentally unstable guy who wanted to shoot a famous politician of any party. Felt contacted Woodward and leaked him the whole story of the FBI's investigation as an anonymous source so the Bureau could get ahead of things.

Great film but there needs to be a special edition with Nixon's dialogue dubbed by Billy West.

And Mark Felt was Deputy Director of the FBI, the second highest post in that organization. He certainly knew what was what.

Another great Dustin Hoffman movie that is generally underrated but seems to be slowly gaining in reputation and recognition (and was just covered by Cinebinge) is the Will Ferrell movie Stranger Than Fiction. A hidden gem and one of my favorite movies.

As a fellow Shattered Glass fan, I want to recommend these two incredible articles catching up with Glass years after the New Republic scandal. The first is by Hanna Rosin, which is the character who was fictionalized/amalgamated into Chloe Sevigny's role in the movie:

This one is even more unexpected, and heartbreaking.

One of the all-time most underappreciated comedies, and would be such a fun follow-up reaction to this.

You've seen Hook and Rainman with Dustin Hoffman. He's been a a lot of good movies but my 2 favorites are Tootsie (comedy) and Marathon Man (definitely not a comedy). My favorite Paul Newman role (other than The Sting) is Cool Hand Luke.

Another very good "based on a true story" inside the day to day of investigative journalism is "Shattered Glass" (2003).
Jack Warden and Martin Balsam who played Harry and Howard were both jurors in 12 Angry Men. Balsam was also the PI in Psycho. Jason Robbards who was Ben Bradlee had a small role in Crimson Tide. He was the military judge at the end of the film. He was a wonderful actor with a great central role in one of my favourite movies: Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West (1968).
Steven Spielberg made The Post (2017) starring Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep as Ben Bradlee and Katie Graham (the unseen in this film owner of the paper who was going to have "her tit caught up in the ringer"). It dealt with the Pentagon Papers and is a sort of prequel to All the President's Men.

its a tribute to the excellent scipt- writing that the audience can follow a story this complicated. This is one on the best political thrillers ever made!!!

Also, can't believe I forgot to mention this before but I'm watching the reaction now, and you're talking about movies about investigative journalism. Two of my all-time favorites, next to this one, are The Insider (1999) with Al Pacino and Russell Crowe and directed by Michael Mann (Heat, Manhunter), and Shattered Glass (2003), starring Hayden Christensen (in his best performance), Peter Sarsgaard, and Chloe Sevigny.

Prabably one of the most historically accurate film ever made. Deep Throat was revealed forty years later as mark felt.

If you guys liked this truly great film and are gonna go down a rabbit hole, I would highly recommend, even if you don't watch it for the channel, the hilarious and sneakily brilliant 1999 comedy Dick starring Michelle Williams and Kirsten Dunst. It's, shall we saw, an alternate take on how Watergate really went down, and a criminally overlooked gem.

Can I just say that I love it when you guys do a web search during the outro and answer some of your own questions? It's always frustrating when you bring up something relevant or important and then just leave it unresolved haha.

YES! Dick is one of my favorite 90s movies. It works as a comedy on its face, but it works even better as a satire if you have some knowledge of what actually happened.

I watched this once on television when I was about 13. I did not totally understand all of it, but I knew what Watergate was, and I had heard about the reporters who broke the story, so I felt intrigued to watch it any how.
I have been looking forward to watching it again as an adult, and now seems like the perfect time. :)

A great follow-up to this would be the underrated 1999 comedy Dick, starring Michelle Williams and Kirsten Dunst.
Redford and Hoffman also appeared in the feature-length 2013 documentary All the President's Men Revisited, looking at the scandal again. If you get the newer 2-disc Blu-ray edition of All the President's Men, the documentary is included on disc 2.

Liam Neeson played in the 2017 movie about Deep Throat- "Mark Felt: The Man Who Was Deep Throat". His name was finally revealed after his death. Felt was second in command at the FBI during Watergate.
