What Lies Beneath (2000) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

What Lies Beneath (2000) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

As a kid I had a tv with a VCR in my room (without cable, only for movie watching) and I was so much of a scaredy cat that my mom watched What Lies Beneath in my room while I did something else. But I was curious and ended up watching the last third of the film with her. That bathtub scene and everything around it scared the beejezus out of me (and is still real fun to this day). This film as a soft spot in my heart as just a really solid but classic ghost story. The whole thing from the spying on the neighbour that might have murdered his wife to Ford being called Norman are but a couple of Hitchcock hommages present in the movie. It's also the end of an era. This was the last blockbuster success as lead stars for Ford and Pfeiffer that wasn't a known IP like Star Wars or Marvel etc. An original supernatural thriller targeted at adults, that cost 100 million dollars with at least half of that going to the director and stars. And it was a hit, making 3 times its budget on release and that's not counting the tv airings and home video rentals/buys. Ford was the king of the kinds of Hollywood adult thrillers or dramas that still reached a wide audience that aren't made today or relegated to tv/streaming. Presumed Innocent, Witness and his two Jack Ryan films (Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger) and The Fugitive (which you've seen) were all massive successes and worth a watch. Pfeiffer is spellbinding in Martin Scorsese's period drama The Age of Innocence opposite Daniel Day Lewis (a must watch).

I met Robert Zemekis at a pre-screening of Flight. It was one of those things where they poll the audience on the film and make changes from there. He sat one row up from my sister and me during the movie. I don't think anyone else in the theatre recognized him but me. I pointed him out to my sister, like, "That's Robert Zemekis!". She went,"Who?". "The guy who directed this movie!". Since we didn't get picked to stay behind for the Q&A portion, as we were leaving, RZ was just chilling in the lobby. People all walking by him without a second glance. He was just in a flannel and jeans, looking like any other person there. So I decided, "I'll never have a chance to meet someone famous that I admire their work" and went up to him. I apologized for bothering him and told him I'd enjoyed Flight and I was a big fan of his other films. At the time, WLB wasn't well-received. So I told him WLB was one of my favorites of his. He seemed surprised and said thank you. I didn't want to bother him anymore so I said it was cool to meet him and good luck with the new movie. Honestly, he seemed kind of surprised someone knew who he was. Given I was the only person to brave talking to him, if anyone else even knew him, I can understand. Probably one of the chillest people I ever met.

Donna Castellano

It sucks that someone would spoil the twist.

I love The Witches of Eastwick. But I don’t think it needs to be reserved for the Halloween season. Such movies are good anytime, and the season is never long enough to work in all the worthy titles. Same applies to the major holidays, unless it has a REALLY strong seasonal overtone, like Miracle on 34th Street. But a lot of really good movies that have a mere element of timing weren’t originally released during the holiday season, nor do they need to be reserved for it.

David Wilkins

I agree, but this one is probably one of the most spoiled movies of all time. When the trailer came out back in 2000, many said that the trailer spoiled it.

Mike the Ginger

Another good creepy movie is The Mothman Prophecies with Richard Gere. For more Michelle Pfeiffer: Stardust.

Odd Thomas

So the entire twist was spoiled for you! People shouldn't spoil movies like that, it's not cool. Great movie by Zemeckis before he lost himself in mo-cap nonsense. He did come back to live action with some decent efforts: Flight and Welcome to Marwen.

Odd Thomas

I agree with your point of how much fun it can be watching actors play against type, but The Day of The Jackal, very faithfully adapted from Frederik Forsyth's crackling 1971 novel, is possibly the greatest cat and mouse thriller ever made, and the remake is, uh, not that. So, respectfully, I would nominate the 1973 version, instead.

VivendoBem

I always thought both Ford's and Pfeiffer's performance in this movie were very good. She can pull off an unnerving look really well. Even though it's really tough to view Ford as an antagonist, I thought he did very well being one. Here's a recommendation for y'all in regards to another actor known for hero roles but plays a villian: The Jackal (1997) starring Bruce Willis (antagonist) and Richard Gere (protagonist). It's based on the screenplay for the 1973 film "The Day of the Jackal."

Lee N.

Yes Julia Louis Dreyfus’s ex husband on The New Adventures of Old Christine

Jason Dolan

Agent Coulson in The Avengers huh. Have you seen SHIELD? Are you talking about the same actor or does someone else play him in Avengers?

Alex

I couldn't imagine Harrison Ford as a bad guy. But man that scene in the beginning with him in the Rolling stones t-shirt. That was so weird to see. lol I've only ever seen him in Star Wars gear, Indiana Jones gear and a suit.

Alex

Hey ya did great it was almost perfect.

Alex

I love this Film !!! Michelle Pfeiffer was always one of my favorite Actresses of All Time !!! And the House is fucking Amazing ... Since this Film my wife and I always want to Visit Maine ;) Fore more Michelle Pfeiffer I Recommend " The Witches Of Eastwick" from 1987 (I'm Sure you will watch it one Day ;)), "Dangerous Minds" from 1995 (Must See), "Into the Night" from 1985, "Wolf" from 1994 and "Tequila Sunsrise" from 1988 with Kurt Russell and Mel Gibson .. More Harrison Ford "Frantic" 1988, "Working Girl" 1988 and Witness " 1985"

Florian Meier

This movie was written by the actor who played Agent Coulson in The Avengers

Jason Dolan

Dang it! -Sam

Robert Zemeckis suggestion: Death Becomes Her and Flight. If you guys haven't seen them yet. I would also suggest the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Series (heavy topics but a good series). The David Fincher version is good but for me it differs too much from the book, I prefer the Swedish version.

Caroline

Almost perfect intro. When you said "So what do you know about this film?" Daniel always says "So what do you know about this movie?" lol.

Alex

Oh yeah, and maybe you can squeeze in The Witches of Eastwick (1987) for spooky season this year.

Paul Cox

Some Michelle Pfeiffer recs: Dangerous Liaisons (1988) The Age of Innocence (1993) Both costume dramas/romances, but both very good. Ladyhawke (1985) Not typically the kind of film I'm drawn to (fantasy), but I'm sure it would make a lot of subscribers pretty happy. Married to the Mob (1988) Jonathan Demme dramedy that's pretty good as far as late 80s heightened reality mob movies go, but the main draw is Pfeiffer's character and great accent!

Paul Cox

Oh I know....I've seen it dozens of times and I freaking everytime! Lol. Another one that gets me....Drag Me to Hell. You should watch it if you haven't.

The face shift was terrifying! -Sam

Always love Harrison Ford as a bad guy--something we don't get enough of. Oh...spoilers, I guess.

Steve Mercier

I love horror so much but I always get super creeped out when her face shifts! I don't know what it is but this movie always scares me a little. Great movie for sure...great reaction! Thanks!
