There’s no need to be able to relate to the story personally, though a lot of people seem to feel that way. It certainly isn’t a “Christmas movie”, but neither are a large number of others that people loosely shovel into that group.

The original film, which was screened to a small audience was 30 minutes longer. and people in the theater could hear kubrick sceaming at studio execs "You can't edit this! This is my movie!" 4 days later Kubrick was dead and the studio re-edited the movie and buried a whole storyline. There's Epstein-esque conspiracy theories floating around that Kubrick was killed for what he was exposing in that movie.
