48 Hrs. (1982) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

First saw this in 1984 on Betamax with my dad. Was a big hit in the US not the UK but by the time of Beverley Hills Cop. 48HRS was flying off the video shelves in the UK!

Backlog Andy M.

This was my second time watching the film and I enjoyed much more this time. Originally, I was taken aback by how much of a mean streak it has. Nolte is great but Jack is such an asshole and the way the scripts treats Rosalie (Luther's girlfriend) is really apalling. She barely has any lines and is essentially a prop. She's completely dropped from the movie after Luther dies and we don't know if she died or anything. She disappears between shots. Most of the female speaking characters in the film are prostitutes that get humiliated and manhandled or inconsequential like Elaine, Jack's girlfriend (a complete waste of the talented Anette O'Toole). It's pretty rough. But Eddie Murphy is straight fire in this. It's one of the most explosive debut film performances ever. A true star making role. Walter Hill's direction is crisp and to the point. His movies The Warriors and Streets of Fire are must see. I also had forgotten how much composer James Horner ripped off his own score for this while making Commando. There are whole passages that are reused. It's almost insulting. Finally I wanted to shout out Peter Jason who plays the barman of the country bar. He appeared in small roles like this in over 10 Walter Hill films but he also has the distinction of being the actor that appeared in the most John Carpenter films (7). Most of them were later career Carpenter though. Of those you've seen he was Gilbert the resistance leader in They Live. He also had a cameo as Johnny Cage's Master Boyd in Mortal Kombat (he had long hair and a beard in that movie). Just one of those reliable character actors that I always like seeing.

You have to watch Dreamgirls, his most dramatic role but also kind of said, you might have to bring tissues for that one. But it is a great movie with Jamie Foxx, Beyonce, Jennifer Hudson and Danny Glover

Great Reaction

Trading Places and Beverly Hills Cop are both already on their channel!

Before you watch another Eddie Murphy movie you must watch his debut Beverly Hills Cop, which was great then Trading Places with Dan Akroyd. Both better than another 48 hrs. His best dramatic roles was in Dream Girls and he should have received an Oscar for that role.

Lana Gorgeous

Another 48hrs next please!! :)

Philip Alan

Another 48 Hrs is totally worth watching Also James Remar was cast as Hicks in ALIENS but got busted buying heroin in London and deported so Michael Biehn replaced him

Jason Dolan

Can't believe you guys didn't make the connection of the screaming chief (and all the bad driving) from Last Action Hero

dayriser

A really nice 80's action film with a great twist on the buddy cop trope. Plus it features the music of The BusBoys. πŸ‘

James Rogers

Yes! I remember seeing him in BHC as well! We need more Jonathan Banks! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Omg no did not realize that was Billy from Predator! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Can't wait until you two figure out there's a part two titled, "Another 48 Hours". And there's another bus scene in part 2, a better one, with great jokes to go along.

Moe howard

Looking forward to this

There was a Best of SNL video my brother and I used to rent all the time. That would make for a great reaction video.

What a fun film! the banter between Nolte and Murphy is so witty. glad you both got to see it! Btw seeing Jonathan Banks (Mike from BB) in a movie from 1982 makes you realize what a long and interesting career he has had!! he was a bad guy in Beverly Hills Cop as well!

Chris Bruneau

When this movie came out Nolte was the bigger movie star and they where taking a shot at Murphy becoming one from his SNL days . They hit paydirt and Murphy became a superstar off this movie. When they reteamed in "Another 48hrs." their careers had switched and Murphy was the big name box office star.

Keith Brown

Great reaction! I think you guys should watch "Another 48 Hours" (1990) and you should soon to keep it fresh in your mind. It isn't as classic as the original, but it is not a bad movie, it was a very big box office hit, and it is more of Jack and Reggie.

Mike the Ginger

Fantastic Reaction Guys!! Sam you are right, The Dynamic between Reggie and Jack is Top Tier!!! Really Love this Film!! Can you imagine that this was Eddie Murphy's First Film !!He was such a Big Star in the 80's !!! And there is a Sequel ;) "Another 48 Hours" with Eddie and Nolte again :) For more Eddie Please go on With Beverly Hills Cop and Please watch "The Golden Child" from 1986 !!! For more Nolte i Recommend "Who will Stop the Rain" from 1978, "U-Turn" from 1997 and "Down and Out in Beverly Hills" from 1986

I think the only other Walter Hill film you've watched on the channel is Red Heat but he was really on a role in the late 70s and early 80s. Just prior to 48 Hours, he directed Southern Comfort (an incredibly tense action thriller set in the Louisiana bayou), The Long Riders (a great Western about the James-Younger gang that covers some of the same history as The Assassination of Jesse James...), and probably his most beloved film, The Warriors (which also features James Remar in his most iconic role). Hill has also been a producer on all the Alien films and contributed the basic story idea for Aliens. I don't know if you picked up on this while looking at the credits but Billy was played by Sonny Landham, best known for his role in Predator (where he also played a character named Billy who owns a big knife).

ROXXANNNE!

I honestly think the art of making a tight, fast paced 90 minute movie is getting lost. I'm always willing to watch a 90 minute movie, but 2 hours feels like too much if I'm pressed for time. That scene with Reggie in the bar was a big deal in the early 80's. Murphy was already a huge TV star on SNL but 48 Hours made him a superstar. Walter Hill's direction has a gritty, down to Earth style. I think he has a lot in common with John Carpenter. They've both made some great movies AND they've both made disappointing sequels to one of their best films (Hill: Another 48 Hours, Carpenter: Escape From LA). Carpenter probably has more classics under his belt and gets talked about more. When it comes to action though, I think Walter Hill easily comes out on top.

Brandon

It's a shame about what the studio did to the sequel. They unexpectedly cut it down from 2 hours to 90 minutes only one week before it got released. It might not have been a great movie, but it wouldn't have been so badly paced. They ended up cutting a lot of story and leaving in most of the action. They even ended up cutting the Captain from the first movie right out of the sequel entirely.

Brandon

Oh, there's a sequel! It's absolutely ABYSMAL, but there's a sequel. All involved are embarrassed by it. The only thing even mildly amusing about Another 48hrs is seeing Eddie Murphy legit fat. Like, no Nutty Professor prosthetics, just a naturally bloated Eddie.

VivendoBem

(Great time to suggest 'Tommy Boy' on that general theme, if you haven't already seen it, that is.)

Paul Cox

I love how you guys are kind of accidentally featuring SNL stars of old in the past couple.

Paul Cox

I'm stoked to see this. I'm currently watching reactions to TRAINING DAY, but this is an immediate next.

Philip Davetas

LOL

TBR Schmitt

Too soon!😑 This must be the prequel '24 Hours'
