The critics totally roasted this movie when it came out. Personally, I think it's fine. There are much worse martial arts action movies than this. Best of the Best 2, for example. Imagine a sequel that practically has the exact opposite message that the ending of this movie has- because sequels always feel the need to raise the stakes. Oh and Wayne Newton is in it for some reason. Best of the Best 3 has Gina Gershon so it's almost worth it for her alone. I've never seen the 4th one. 😅

I don't think they're terrible people. Though I'd be lying if I said "Damn Daniel you're violent af" didn't happen more than several times while watching stuff.. but I'm joking when I think it and I think he's joking when he says it. It's a fantasy situation so it's not real.
But what I love most is how Sam is just like "maybe *we're* terrible people" .. The level of solidarity her and Daniel have is inspirational.

HAHA!! Not terrible people - just not understanding I think. This is a martial arts movie in the truest sense with its message. The point of martial arts is not to hurt other people, it's to defend yourself. the point of martial arts competition is to test yourself against an opponent - they're not your enemy, while it may be combat, there's still a symbiosis there in that, you either win...or you learn. Not winning is a gift as your opponent has shown you the areas where you need work - winning is great cos it reinforces the idea that you're on the right track.
As it relates to the movie - Tommy had won - his thought in the moment was to possibly avenge his bro by kicking this dude into another dimension - but the nature of martial arts is not vengeance and that's the point. He'd won the match on a skill for skill basis - plain as day for all to see - killing the dude at that point in his defenceless state would be against the idea of martial arts and martial arts competition. Ergo - the message of the movie...
You guys need you some Thunderdome - 2 men enter, 1 man leaves ;) HAHA!
Keep up the great work

Yeah you guys are terrible people! :P I appreciate watching this with you guys, Grew up on martial arts films, such a great genre. Two films to consider that are on wayy different spectrums of the genre. First one is Above The Law (1988) starring Steven Seagal. That name may conjure various opinions but his first several films are definitely martial arts classics and why he got fame, plus Pam Grier (Jackie Brown).. The second is 36 Chambers of Shaolin (1978) starring Gordon Liu ( Pai Mei in Kill Bill 2), classic kung fu film that tackles deeper themes and also rap group , Wu Tang Clan, named their first album after this film. Please consider checking out, Ones a must for American Martial arts movies and the other for Hong Kong martial arts films

Cobra Kai season 6 part 2 definitely has a very Best of the Best/Rocky 2 sub plot.
And the Sekai Taikai is a team tournament and seems to be scored the same way as Best of the Best.

“Are we terrible people?”
“Maybe we are.”
Hahahaha!
The other 3 handed over the medals because it was a TEAM competition.

Classic late 80s martial arts film! Cobra Kai has a season 6 episode titled Best of the Best.
Phillip Rhee who plays Tommy is actually brother to Simon Rhee who plays Dae Han.
I think Simon Rhee was the original trainer to the cobra Kai cast in the first couple of seasons and an assistant stunt coordinator.

If Daniel knuckles down now and starts putting in the hard work and training,he could easily make it as the team captain of the US for the 2030 remake of Best of the Best

I remember when this came out everyone was scratching their heads why this cast agreed to do this movie. I think it was sold to them as Karate Kid meets Rocky.
But in the late 80's, these movies were still money. Make one for 10 mil and make back 30.
