2024-11-14 13:36:01 +0000 UTCThere are some good titles on the list, but John Woo changed how we think about action movies.

2024-11-14 13:35:26 +0000 UTCEraser (1996) one of Arnold's last good action movies IMO. October Sky (1999) a great feel good movie The Hand that rocks the Cradle (1992) Great Thriller

2024-11-04 13:58:34 +0000 UTC"...saw 83 times on HBO when I was a teenager" is funny. You don't know how bad I'd like to know the demographics of the voters for polls.

2024-11-02 21:03:18 +0000 UTCI would enjoy a reaction to the Clint Eastwood classic The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976).

2024-11-02 21:01:50 +0000 UTCThat’s the kind of thing that has annoyed me forever about popular polls, and “popular” nearly everything else. But at least we have the monthly drawing. 😶
David Wilkins
2024-11-01 20:41:20 +0000 UTCThere's definitely a "I vote for whatever I saw 83 times on HBO when I was a teenager" lean in the patron electorate. It's even more prevalent among YT commenters. It is what it is, but the best reactors (Schmitts included) do take note of what else is being discussed in the replies.
Paul Cox
2024-11-01 19:44:11 +0000 UTCI doubt the The Conversation will ever be reacted to unless it wins a poll or is a Schmitthead winner. This channel has more variety than most, but still leans towards more recent, mainstream fair. I looked through the 97 titles reacted to since November 2023 and only 10 were pre 1980 films(2 were Scmitthead winners, 7 were poll winners, and Escape From Alcaraz was reacted to because the author of a new book about it contacted the Schmitts about a reaction)

2024-10-31 16:30:24 +0000 UTCInteresting how none of these polls are close(doubt the gap will close over the next month). I'm often surprised by polls that have runaway winners(never would have guessed before clicking on results that Air Force one would destroy some of these other titles so thoroughly)

2024-10-31 15:54:24 +0000 UTCHard Boiled is one of the greatest action movies of all time! I know it won't win, though.

2024-10-29 04:35:14 +0000 UTCPlease, don't let Air Force one win. lol Trainspotting, Philadelphia are much, much better films.

2024-10-29 04:34:53 +0000 UTCDang, I read Ghost and mistook it for a second for The Ghost and the Darkness (1996), which I've been hoping they get to at some point. lol Voted for Being John Malkovich because I've seen it mentioned or referenced in various places and I do want to actually watch it finally.

2024-10-28 20:53:19 +0000 UTCAir Force One seems to be divisive (at least as a "best of the 90s" film) but I'm glad it's getting so many votes. Arguably, it is the last great action movie with Harrison Ford in the lead role (and I don't say that happily).
Dan McComb
2024-10-28 20:45:03 +0000 UTC100% Dangerous Liaisons is absolutely one of the best movies of the 80s!
Dan McComb
2024-10-28 20:40:31 +0000 UTCFear & Loathing is the best movie on there by far. I also picked Trainspotting and Air Force One tho. I'm starting to feel like a dinosaur saying I saw all these movies in the theater.

2024-10-28 18:11:40 +0000 UTCAir Force One is fun, but best of the '90s? It's not even the best Die Hard knock-off of the '90s (Speed). Nothing against it, I'm sure you'll have fun, but it'd be more accurate to say it's one of the most *popular* films of the '90s. Some for next time you're looking for the best of the '90s, in both mainstream and less-mainstream lists. Apologies for how long these are, but I started and then it was hard to stop. I'm sure I still left a ton of great stuff out. Mainstream: • 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) dir. Gil Junger (this is his only notable movie) • As Good As It Gets (1997) dir. James L. Brooks (don't think you've seen anything he's directed on the channel yet) • Bad Lieutenant (1992) dir. Abel Ferrara (nothing on the channel yet) • Basic Instinct (1992) dir. Paul Verhoeven (RoboCop) • Before Sunrise (1995) dir. Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused) • Bound (1996) dir. Lana and Lilly Wachowski (The Matrix) • Bowfinger (1999) dir. Frank Oz (voice of Yoda and Ms. Piggy -- nothing on the channel he's directed yet) • Bringing Out the Dead (1999) dir. Martin Scorsese • Dances With Wolves (1990) dir. Kevin Costner • Dark City (1998) dir. Alex Proyas (The Crow) • Darkman (1990) dir. Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead) • Drunken Master II aka The Legend of Drunken Master (1994) dir. Lau Kar-Leung (arguably the peak of Jackie Chan's movie stuntwork) • Ed Wood (1994) dir. Tim Burton (Batman) • Election (1999) dir. Alexander Payne (nothing on the channel yet) • Event Horizon (1997) dir. Paul W.S. Anderson (nothing on the channel yet, not to be confused with Paul Thomas Anderson) • Face/Off (1997) dir. John Woo (nothing on the channel yet, although you did put his film Hard-Boiled on this poll) • Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) dir. James Foley (nothing on the channel yet) • Hudsucker Proxy, The (1994) dir. Joel and Ethan Coen • Insider. The (1999) dir. Michael Mann (Heat) • Lost Highway (1997) dir. David Lynch (Mulholland Dr.) • Malcolm X (1992) dir. Spike Lee (nothing on the channel yet) • magnolia (1999) dir. Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood) • Mission: Impossible (1996) dir. Brian De Palma (Carrie) • October Sky (1999) dir. Joe Johnston (nothing on the channel yet, although he directed Captain America: The First Avenger) • Out of Sight (1998) dir. Steven Soderbergh (Ocean's Eleven) • Piano, The (1993) dir. Jane Campion (nothing on the channel yet) • Quick and the Dead, The (1995) dir. Sam Raimi • Romy and Michele's High School Reunion (1997) dir. David Mirkin (his only notable movie) • Rounders (1998) dir. John Dahl (nothing on the channel yet) • Sense and Sensibility (1995) dir. Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) • Talented Mr. Ripley, The (1999) dir. Anthony Minghella (nothing on the channel yet) • Thomas Crown Affair, The (1999) dir. John McTiernan (Die Hard) -- I also recommend the 1968 original • Three Kings (1999) dir. David O. Russell (nothing on the channel yet, and frankly he kinda sucks as a person, but Three Kings is a masterpiece) • Wild at Heart (1990) dir. David Lynch More obscure: • City of Lost Children, The (1995) dir. Jean Pierre-Jeunet (Amelie) and Marc Caro • Cry-Baby (1990) dir. John Waters (nothing on the channel yet) • Deep Cover (1992) dir. Bill Duke (he was in Predator, don't think you've seen any of his films, although he did direct Sister Act 2, which seems like it could've been watched pre-channel) • Devil in a Blue Dress (1995) dir. Carl Franklin (nothing on the channel yet) • Eve's Bayou (1997) dir. Kasi Lemmons (she was in Silence of the Lambs and Candyman, nothing she directed on the channel yet) • Gas Food Lodging (1992) dir. Alison Anders (nothing on the channel yet) • Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999) dir. Jim Jarmusch (nothing on the channel yet) • Haine, La (1995) dir. Mathieu Kassovitz (he was in Amelie, nothing he directed on the channel yet) • Hard Eight (1996) dir. Paul Thomas Anderson (his debut feature) • Ice Storm, The (1997) dir. Ang Lee • Insomnia (1997) dir. Erik Skjoldbjærg -- later remade by Christopher Nolan, but the original is way better • King of New York (1990) - dir. Abel Ferrara • Light Sleeper (1992) dir. Paul Schrader (writer of Taxi Driver) • Lone Star (1996) dir. John Sayles (nothing on the channel yet) • Matinee (1993) dir. Joe Dante (Gremlins) • Mississippi Masala (1991) dir. Mira Nair (nothing on the channel yet) • Naked (1993) dir. Mike Leigh (nothing on the channel yet) • Proof (1991) dir. Jocelyn Moorhouse (nothing on the channel yet) • Quick Change (1990) dir. Howard Franklin and Bill Murray • Rainmaker, The (1997) dir. Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather) • Ride With the Devil (1999) dir. Ang Lee • Secrets & Lies (1996) dir. Mike Leigh • Slums of Beverly Hills (1998) dir. Tamara Jenkins (nothing on the channel yet) • Sneakers (1992) dir. Phil Alden Robinson (Field of Dreams) • Sweet Hereafter, The (1997) dir. Atom Egoyan (nothing on the channel yet) • Trees Lounge (1996) dir. Steve Buscemi • Zero Effect (1998) dir. Jake Kasdan (nothing on the channel yet) *I have to single out Trees Lounge. Trees Lounge was Buscemi's directorial debut, and he also wrote it. One of the things I learned about it right before I watched it just recently is that it was a major influence for David Chase when he created the look and feel of "The Sopranos," and I really think you can see it in the movie, even though the plot bears no resemblance whatsoever. Later, Buscemi would direct "Pine Barrens," one of the most famous episodes of "The Sopranos." Since you guys loved the show, I think you should definitely consider Trees Lounge for the channel, even though it would never, ever win a poll. Really fascinating stuff for fans.

2024-10-28 03:36:04 +0000 UTCCruel Intentions is an okay movie, but it's a modern day remake of a much better John Malcovich movie called Dangerous Liaisons. I'd vote for that in a second. John Malcovich, Glenn Close, and Keanu Reeves (Very very young Keanu)

2024-10-28 03:10:49 +0000 UTCI saw it in Times Square opening night with my sis when visiting from Oz back in '97. First cinema experience in the US, and boy id never before seen people yelling at the screen. 'Pop a cap in his ass!' and the like. It enabled me to appreciate the Curb Your Enthusiasm season 6 ending ' Larry David & the Blacks'. Reminds me, one night there i came across this long line of people, 100% black. I asked one what they were waiting for, and they said 'Puff Daddy'. I nodded, but internally im like wtf is a puff daddy? oh diddy, what did you done do?? why have you forsaken us? Forever stroking furry walls

2024-10-28 02:27:25 +0000 UTCJust wanna reiterate that it's the 50th anniversary of Francis Ford Coppola's masterpiece The Conversation (1974) -- hoping it can slip in before the end of the year. One of his best movies, one of Gene Hackman's best movies, one of the best movies period.

2024-10-28 01:55:27 +0000 UTCCmon guys, lets get Being John Malkovitch across the line. TBR & Sam, you must see it one way or another, a truly truly unique film thats great. I mean how many other films about puppeteers are there?? Made by Spike Jonze Air Force one is just generic action thingy. Harrison is always good, but there are plenty of better ford flicks.
