Donnie Brasco (1997) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Just a quick reminder, this full length is messy because of the file issues we had! Hopefully it'll sync seamlessly!

Donnie Brasco (1997) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

This is such a magnificent film, and another that has largely fallen off the radar screen during recent years. I think it’s one of Pacino’s best performances (that’s saying something), and also one of Depp’s best. Depp really is a fine actor, though most of his time has been spent as a blockbuster “movie star”. And he’s better than that. All of the performances are stellar, and that’s a testament to Mike Newell’s great skill as a director. Thanks for doing this one, and thanks again for the great presentation you make each and every time. Sorry you had such a struggle with editing the last couple, Dan.

Another great Al Pacino film is Insomnia (2002). It also stars Robin Williams and was directed by Christopher Nolan.

Yall two already did my favorite al Pacino films, Scarface and Carlitos way, thank you btw, but anytime there is more Pacino it just keeps getting sweeter! 😁

Thanks so much, Sam. Those 3 mob films are the only ones left that are great!! "Once Upon a Time in America" is the last film directed by Sergio Leone which stars Robert De Niro and James Woods And "The Irishman" as you probably know, was filmed by Scorsese which has an all-star cast... Robert De Niro Al Pacino Harvey Keitel Joe Pesci

I think Gotti is the only one I’m not sure if it’s on the list but I’ll check! -Sam

Thank you, Brandon! I’m glad the syncing wasn’t too bad for you! It was a nightmare edit for sure but happy Daniel was able to get it out! Depp definitely has some serious range and I can see why this is your preference! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Ooh we’ll have to check out some more interviews! Yeah I didn’t think there was a shot of him ever getting money back haha thanks for the recommendations! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

He’s fantastic! -Sam

Oh interesting! Yeah our first impression was Jack Sparrow haha -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh very interesting!! For the films sake, it made more sense for Lefty but interesting switch up! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Ooh I love this!! Yes, this was a much different take! Oh interesting! We haven’t seen the HP films but what versatility! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I hope you guys add "Once Upon A Time in America" (1984) , "Gotti" (1996), "The Irishman" (2019) to the list of mob films

Joe Lazarus

Whoops, sorry.

"Lefty Horsecock?!" Daniel has these moments where he really cracks me up.

Awesome reaction, I hadn't seen this movie in years and almost forgot how much I love it. Another comment kind of touched on this, but THIS is the lane I've always preferred seeing Johnny Depp in - movies where he just sinks in to the character he's playing and gives it his all. Then there's the "other" Depp performances where he still gives it his all, but it's mostly about the odd costumes and make-up and too much emphasis on being quirky or eccentric. Those type of performances are always so exhausting. The sync issues weren't really a problem either. I had to double-tap the spacebar a few times to get the sync realigned properly. I didn't mind because I already have to do this all the time whenever I get up for a restroom/coffee break and pause everything.

Brandon

Thanks, Marcus! The mob stories are wild!! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

We haven’t done Public Enemies! Daniel’s seen it, but I haven’t! -Sam

This is one of my favorite mob movies, I think it's hugely underrated. In terms of realism I think it's on par with Goodfellas, partly because I've seen Joe Pistone in interviews, btw he's fearless, he's ignored the bounty on his head and done tons of interviews. One thing I thought was funny is that he said Lefty really would hit him up for 50 or 100 or whatever whenever he saw him and would say he would get him back later but never would. He said, you gotta understand these guys are takers, they're the same kids who stole your lunch money in elementary, they take whatever they can from whoever they can (whomever?). Paraphrasing btw. Lefty and Donnie are actually two of my favorite characters from both Pacino and Depp, for more Johnny Depp, these are a few of my favorites: "Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas", Depp was a friend of Hunter Thompson, an absolute wildman but a great writer in my opinion, and Depp does a great job playing him (Bill Murray played him in "Where Tte Buffalo Roam", and he told Johnny that once he got Hunter under his skin he'd never be the same). And "The Ninth Gate", which is a Roman Polanski movie (I know, he's a creep, but the movie is interesting), I think it's a great movie to include around Halloween, it's not really scary but definitely in the horror genre, creepy, grear atmosphere, interesting premise. "Dead Man" I haven't seen but sounds really interesting to me so if you guys watch that I'll definitely be excited to check it out with you.

Man, an angry Michael Madsen is absolutely terrifying.

Also, if you're of a certain age, you remember him first from 21 Jump Street, the late-80s tv series on Fox. I guess you'd approach him totally differently as a working actor if your first impression of him wasn't a teen heartthrob.

I had reservations about Depp—the ACTOR!—even before all of the Amber Heard mess, but there are a handful of films where I think his choices didn't get in the way of enjoying what I was seeing. 'Finding Neverland' is deeply charming, his self-reinvention as Ed Wood in Tim Burton's 'Ed Wood' is phenomenal, the quiet sorrow of Edward Scissorhands in Burton's 'Edward Scissorhands' kills me every time, and he's exactly the right person for the part in both 'Blow' and 'Dead Man.'

Paul Cox

Pacino is 84 so technically early 80s and Depp is 61 so 23 years his junior. Here’s some essential Depp: Edward Scissorhands Benny & Joon What’s Eating Gilbert Grape Ed Wood Sleepy Hollow Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Platoon Blow Public Enemies Chocolat Secret Window Black Mass Sweeney Todd From Hell Don Juan Demarco

Jason Dolan

Great movie. It wasn't for nothing. Led to over 100 convictions. Lefty was never killed. He was imprisoned for 11 yrs and released for cancer treatments. He died less than a year after his release. The seen where Lefty removes his watch and jewelry IRL was actually Sonny Black. Sonny was the one who was sent for and was killed not Lefty .

thomas king

I think it's so poetic that Al Pacino begins his career as Michael Corleone, this intelligent, cold, solitary General of the mafia and now later in his career he plays lefty the loser who is happy that someone wants to be his friend. I think it's one of his best performances. Also, usually mob movies show the fun, flashy parts of being a gangster, but I love how these guys aren't cool. They're just sad and lame. No one would want to join this crew. Mike Newell is a versatile director. He also did Four Weddings and a Funeral and Goblet of Fire, the fourth Harry Potter movie.

Ellie Miller

Definitely based on a true story, even if some details were changed. The movie was based on the book by the real Joseph Pistone. Another great reaction. I was really looking forward to this one.
