I'd never seen this before I watched it with you guys, and this is my new favorite martial arts movie series. I watched 2 and 3 after this and absolutely love it..You definitely should watch the rest of the movies on the channel. If you love this definitely should watch Dragon: The Brice Lee Story. It's very similar in many ways.

But yeah, Sammo worked with Jackie in the Peking Opera Academy, along with another classmate/friend named Yuen Biao. They actually did a few movies together in the 80's, and were known in Hong Kong as the Three Dragons, or the Three Brothers.

2024-09-12 12:45:13 +0000 UTCSuch a brilliant movie, even beyond martial arts, the drama, the action, the relationships, characters, so well done. I know this movie is largely fictional but Ip Man's life was still fascinating. One thing that is well known is how brutally cruel the Japanese were in China. The infamous 'rape of Nanjing' is absolutely horrific with women raped to death with samurai swords and Chinese babies impaled on bayonets in groups like kebabs...if anything the portrayal of the Japanese in this movie is very watered down.

Two of the most beloved are Iron Monkey, directed by Yen's mentor, Yuen Woo Ping (choreographer of The Matrix and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) and Sha Po Lang (better known in the U.S. as Killzone), a brutal modern day cop thriller that reignited Yen's career a couple years before Ip Man. Yen has also had two very memorable on-screen encounters with Jet Li. The first was in the second film of Li's signature film series, Once Upon a Time in China, and the other was in Zhang Yimou's Hero, a film that I'm sure was recommended to you a lot after you watched Crouching Tiger. The action in Ip Man 1 and 2 was choreographed by Sammo Hung, a legendary actor and director in Hong Kong cinema. Hung grew up living and training at a Peking Opera academy where his classmates included his "little brother" Jackie Chan as well as Yuen Wah and Yuen Qiu, the Landlord and Landlady in Kung Fu Hustle. Sammo also has a featured role in Ip Man 2 but you already got a brief taste of him when he fought Bruce Lee in the opening sequence at the temple in Enter the Dragon.

XD This is one of the most beautiful martial arts movies I've seen, and the soundtrack (especially the Ip Man theme) is just as memorable. I definitely recommend the sequels. There is Ip Man 2, 3 and 4, and Donnie Yen is in all of them. Ip Man 2 actually has one of my favorite martial artists in it, and that person used to work with Jackie Chan on a personal level. I'll explain more about that whenever you get to the sequel.
