The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward... (2007) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

Oh no way! I have to go back and watch that scene, it's been awhile! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I was holding off on this until the YouTube version got released, but do you remember in Unforgiven when everyone panicked and got gunned down by Eastwood? The shootout between Wood Heit and Dick Liddle took place across a dining table and not the bedroom, both blazed away at 3 feet and missed

Smooticus

3:10 to Yuma (2007) is a great western. Hostiles is great too (both star Christian Bale)

Odd Thomas

Another great Brad Pitt movie is Tree of Life

Odd Thomas

Thank YOU for the opportunity to share this movie!

Garry L

Interesting! Yeah I think that makes more sense for him to have the cowardice label for shooting him unexpectedly but I did like how it played out in the film too! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh wow! That’s very interesting to know! Watching these so late, you don’t realize which movies came out around each other. What a great year for cinema! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh no way!! Casey was perfect for the role! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Ah okay cool! I was hoping we weren’t too far off! Thanks for the selection, Garry! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh cool! That sounds interesting! I’d love to see different takes of some of the same characters! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I’m glad we weren’t the only ones with so many thoughts on the death scene! Casey was so fantastic in that role, so creepy! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

So glad you enjoyed it! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

We hear you guys! We’ve been afraid of another Western Poll but we can give it another try soon! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh wow! What a resume! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I think you are right ... I remember some comments on Young Guns at this Time ... I really hope The Western Poll comes back

Florian Meier

I love this movie so much, I don't understand how people think it's boring. Regarding the death scene, I think they way they portray it in the film, Jesse is giving up + testing to see if Bob has the sand to actually kill him. Jesse (along with everyone else) has bullied Bob forever, I see it as another Jesse James mind game. I also think that in real life, it was much more straightforward. Bob took advantage of a lucky moment when Jesse's back was turned to shoot him in the back. I think Bob was probably scared for his life (afraid Jesse would kill him for murdering Wood), but he also wanted the reward and thought he would be a big man and become famous.

Cinematography, score and acting are at the highest level. So glad this prompted me to rewatch this masterpiece!

Allen S.

This was an accurate portrayal of Jesse James, so much so, that his descendents spoke out about the fact. Thank you for doing this one, thank you to Gary for choosing it too. I feel like this never got the recognition it deserved, it came out the same year as No Country for old men and there will be blood. People say that they over shadowed it, but I don't know. I know a few people who found it boring, couldn't watch it. I thinks it's one of the best films of this century.

Richard Desmond

Yeah, the subtlety in his acting is second to none...well, maybe some. Hot take, I think Sam and Casey's acting are to me, the ones that really shine, not that Brad and the rest aren't excellent.

Richard Desmond

Was just going to say the same thing as I experienced RDR2 just recently all the way through. Kept seeing elements from various film and TV shows and historical events etc... The thing that amazes me about this time period was, in the scheme of things, it was a very short time between the years 1865 and 1895.

Guston Zimasheen

Such a great movie for sure. If this was "Zoolander" (2001), Derek Zoolander would say : "There would be no eugoogoolizers for Bob". jk

Guston Zimasheen

This was great! So glad you took the time for this slow burn of a movie. Fun fact: According to Sam Rockwell, he and the other members (Jeremy Renner, Paul Schneider, Garret Dilahunt) of the last train heist all auditioned for the role of Bob Ford. He even mentioned Ryan Gosling auditioned.

👌👌👌

Goosebumps every time. I was lucky enough to be at a Q & A with Roger & James Deakins a couple of months ago. Always fascinating to hear them talk about their movies.

Garry L

You guys have it right, by the end Jesse wanted to die. He all but states that fact by taking off his guns and laying them down. He’s done. There’s a the scene when he visits Ed and Ed says he has a bit of money so doesn’t need to turn Jesse in and Jesse responds with “well, it’s the principle too”. He knows the loyalty has gone from the gang and his paranoia is at a maximum. The last 5 minutes are always so moving to me. The music, the narration. “There would be no eulogies for Bob” So good.

Garry L

Red Dead Redemption 2 borrows brilliantly from this movie.

Bennett Holleman

There is an excellent western directed by Walter Hill called The Long Riders that features many of the same historical figures and some of the same events as this film (the bulk of the story takes place several years earlier). A novelty of the film is that all the outlaw brothers are played by actors who are real-life brothers, most of whom you will be familiar with.

Brad P

This to me is still my favorite film of Deakins. That shot of the train light coming through the trees never fails to impress

Tay Schumaker

Jim Cummings is not in the movie. He’s a character that hangs over the whole film, over every character, but never shows up on screen

Tay Schumaker

Glad you mentioned it. Had many a debate with people about the death scene. Was he trying to put them at ease by taking off his guns, trying to get them to stand down? One last Hail Mary so he could plan his next move? Or was he finally tired of running and so he decided to give in and let himself be killed. Was he tired of what he’d become? One of my favorite subtle moments from Casey Affleck. Watch him as he collapses on the couch after he shoots Jesse, he starts caressing his guns and his belt. He’s still obsessed with him. The film is pretty historically accurate, as far as movies go anyway. The book it’s based on is really good as well. The movie makes Bob a little more humble and remorseful in the epilogue than the book and real life would indicate. But it’s also maybe my favorite part of the film. “Charley Ford became all that his countrymen wanted an assassin of Jesse James to be.”

Tay Schumaker

All of these would make for great reactions. I think the reason why there haven’t been any western reactions since the Young Guns films is that some people were making stupid comments on the polls and starting arguments. Hopefully we can start getting western reactions and polls again soon. I would personally be okay with disabling comments on the western polls as a precaution.

James Miley

As much as I love westerns, I'm ashamed to admit I haven't seen this one. This will also be a first time watch! Edit: Great movie! Great reaction!

Mr. Writhms

Great Film !!! Really missed your Western Reactions ... I think your Last One was Young Guns 2 ... You must watch so much more !!! Kevin Costners Oscar Masterpiece "Dancing With Wolves" from 1990 (You will love it), Open Range (2003) also Kevin Costner... Clint Eastwoods High Plains Drifter from 1973, "Pale Rider" from 1985 and Hang Em High (1968) and The Outlaw Josey Wales (1975) ... All from Clint ;) and of Course "Once Upon a Time in the West" from 1968 with Charles Bronson and Henry Fonda

Florian Meier

The cinematography was courtesy of the great Roger Deakins who's best known for his longtime association with the Coen Brothers as well as several films each with Denis Villeneuve and Sam Mendes. He famously was nominated for 13 Academy Awards before finally getting his first Oscar on the 14th try with Blade Runner 2049.

Brad P

This will be fun

Jason Dolan

Cant wait to watch this one!!! THIS is an amazing film; to quote a New York Times film critic: "Andrew Dominik’s The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is a work of the most supreme audacity...cinema in its purest art form." Fantastic Choice Dan & Sam!

Chris Bruneau

Acting is brilliant. Sam Rockwell especially with the awkward roof story and at the end. Sam rocks

fredfinks

Real excited for this, and so glad someone is finally reacting to it. Love everything about this movie, the music, the cinematography, the performances. The melancholy epilogue. It's so overlooked by so many people
