This is for next week, but it's ready so I'm posting anyways LOL

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

Great reaction to a unique film. Others have already suggested a few Wes Anderson films, but l’ll put forward a couple of my own. (1) The Royal Tenenbaums, which is equally quirky and wonderful. (2) Moonrise Kingdom (3) Fantastic Mr. Fox (This one is delightful, being a stop-motion animation in the fantastic style of Wes Anderson. The story is by Roald Dahl, who wrote Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, to give you some idea of its nature. The voice actors are great, featuring George Clooney. I’m not huge on animation, but stop-motion is a whole other thing, and this is one of the best examples of the craft.) You can’t go wrong with any of these three.

Kind of beating a dead horse here but yes: Rushmore The Royal Tenenbaums . . . Moonrise Kingdom Fantastic Mr. Fox The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou All fantastic but GBH is always talked about among Wes Anderson's best work along with Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums while these other three are fantastic and great watches, but simply not regarded the same. I would say Moonrise Kingdom is probably the most underrated in his catalog.

This is a serious win for me. Had I realized you guys hadn't seen this movie, it'd have been my pick for random movie drawing of the month instead of Perks of Being a Wallflower, but low and behold, here it is!

I'm so happy you guys are getting into Wes Anderson, I know he's not for everyone, I personally LOVE his movies. If I were you I might even consider going through them chronologically, because you can see his style develop, especially in his earlier movies like Bottle Rocket (his first) and Rushmore (i think his second). The Royal Tenenbaums is probably my favorite, and Rushmore, The Darjeeling Limited, and this one are probably my favorites after that, but it'd be great to revisit the others because I'll probably change my opinion a little, which usually happens after multiple rewatches. Plus I haven't seen them all, especially the newer ones, looking forward to that hopefully. Fun reaction, so many great funny moments in this one, Ralph Fiennes is one of my favorite actors with unbelievable range, to be Gustave and Amon Goeth is crazy range. And I loved all the cameos, a lot of those actors you will see again, some of them many times, almost wouldn't be a Wes Anderson movie without at least a cameo by Bill Murray or one of the Wilson brothers haha

The Life Aquatic is a good one. Bottle Rocket is also very good, but clearly his first film.

Agreed.

I go back and forth on Rushmore and The Grand Budapest Hotel.

iliketostayhome

I hope you guys will watch Rushmore. His 3 must-see films, imo, are Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, and The Grand Budapest Hotel.

iliketostayhome

Rushmore is my favourite Wes Anderson movie.

Mark M

Quite a pleasant surprise to see this pop up. Just a lovely little film. Thanks.

James Rogers

I'm sure it's been requested a million times, but I asked about it on the last day of last month's Schmittwheel post. Not publicly taking credit, but privately I'm thinking "heh, it worked!"

Paul Cox

Hey…I don’t remember this one being on the radar screen, but I love when that happens. You guys have been cooking lately. This one is near the very top of my Wes Anderson list, and I look forward to watching the full reaction soon.

David Wilkins

I would go to the mat for Bottle Rocket, The Life Aquatic, AND The Darjeeling Limited. I'll let others advocate for Moonrise Kingdom (on which I am in a distinct minority of just not feeling it) and anything more recent than Budapest, although that is not necessarily a reflection of the movies: I chose to skip Isle of Dogs and simply haven't seen most of the rest (the one exception is Asteroid City, which didn't click with me on first go, but I'd definitely rewatch it with Dan and Sam).

Tyler Foster

Love this Film !!! I recommend as next Wes Anderson also "The Royal Tenenbaums" ... Gene Hackman is so great in it ... i recommend also "Moonrise Kingdom"

The ending to Grand Budapest is indeed bittersweet, but I think it is the best kind of bittersweet. Sometimes life is like that, and in the case of this movie, even though it is sad, I also find it deeply satisfying. The movie's story looks back but also shows how the story has persevered, and there's a beauty in the way it brings that fictional period back to life through that storytelling. I've seen a couple of Wes Anderson movies I wasn't over the moon for on the first viewing or whatever but I really just think, like Tarantino and (hopefully) the Coen Brothers, just watch everything on the channel. This one is my personal favorite already, but I also would love to see Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, and The Life Aquatic on the channel in the near future. I will also point out that Fantastic Mr. Fox is a Thanksgiving movie, and that I believe his first film, Bottle Rocket, is quite underrated -- another one of his best.

Tyler Foster

Royal Tenenbaums, Grand Budapest, Rushmore are the trifecta of perfection. The rest are varying degrees of awesome to ok.

Jen Barnes

What a nice surprise. I have been waiting so long for a Wes Anderson film to make it on the channel. I do believe that this film is his masterpiece. I had the pleasure of seeing this in the theater when it was released. Every seat was filled, and everyone gave a happy round of applause as soon as the film ended. It was a truly memorable experience. I recommend "Rushmore" or "The Royal Tenenbaums" as the next stop on your Wes Anderson journey. Both films have amazing soundtracks.

Michael Chavira

I think there are 4 that any reactor (or person, in general) must watch: Rushmore, Tenenbaums, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and The Grand Budapest Hotel. The 5th one comes down to personal preference, I suppose. For me, it's Moonrise Kingdom, but I know there are camps of Bottle Rocket and The Life Aquatic stans out there. A lot of people liked Asteroid City waaaaay more than I did, but I don't know many/any people who'd go to the mat for The French Dispatch or The Darjeeling Limited, lol.

Can't wait for more Wes Anderson. "Royal Tenenbaums" especially, that movie is beyond amazing.

Wesley

I was always hesitant to watch this because I am not a fan of the film style...but I saw it a few months ago with another reactor (while eating popcorn) and it became one of my favorite movies. When I saw you guys were going to react to it, I was so excited to watch it again ESPECIALLY when 3 minutes into it,I could see in Samantha's face that she was going to love this. I was on the verge of crying a few times but can't really tell you why. And as icing on the cake to hear Samantha yell out "YEAH YOU ASSHOLE"...oh , made my day,

Anthony Perez

Thank you for this. Enjoyed it very much. Love Wes Anderson movies. My screen name is actually taken from my personal favorite Wes Anderson movie. He uses a lot of the same actors which is cool. You didn't recognize Tilda Swinton? I didn't either on first viewing. Great reaction darlings, Lol.

FischerMax98

I can't believe you are watching this! Yess! I keep putting The Intouchables (2011) up on my pick for the Scmitty Wheel (or whatever you want to call it!), but this movie is always the one in my head as a backup for that poll in case the Intouchables was ever selected. lol

Forrest

Oh man I'm so excited!

Tyler Foster

I just saw this for the first time. I loved it!

JoshG

What an amazing surprise!

Rushmore and The Grand Budapest Hotel are tied for my favorite. Then The Royal Tenenbaums.

iliketostayhome

Wes Anderson has two sort of distinct periods. The early years featured the same kind of dialogue and storytelling in a more conventional "movie" style as best exemplified by Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums. Then there's the later more manicured diorama style best exemplified by Moonrise Kingdom and The Grand Budapest Hotel. Some of the rest either lean too much on one thing or not enough on the other. The outliers are his two animated films. Like everything else, one works (Fantastic Mr. Fox) and one kind of doesn't (Isle of Dogs).

Paul Cox

One of Wes Anderson's best movies (in my not so humble opinion). Ralph Fiennes is the absolute motherfucking man in this. "When you're young, it's all filet steak, but as the years go by, you have to move on to the cheap cuts. Which is fine with me, because I like those. More flavorful, or so they say."

Steve Mercier

Wow. What did we do to deserve this little treat?

Smooticus

When it rains it pours!
