I second this. The Insider is great and unfortunately often overlooked.

As others have mentioned, you should add ‘The Insider’ to your Michael Mann list to be viewed. I think it’s one of his best, despite what seems to be a “sleepy” story concept. Great cast and great performances.

One more comment: the Daniel Day Lewis-ness that occurred in this film was not in a wild/weird character (because it’s a 200 year old story about a traditional hero) but in his insane-seeming preparation for the role. He learned and lived primitive skills for months prior to the movie, all SORTS of stuff that would never be seen on film (and some that would, like learning to load a muzzle-loading rifle on the run) because he wanted to be as authentic as possible. Dude was camping under a self-made lean-to and cooking over his own fires well before any of the other cast even arrived. His stated reason for this is that every character he plays will be on film forever, and he wants to embody each one to his utmost ability. It’s funny how different people can react to the same things so differently, and sometimes it all depends on the day you’re having. To me, LOTM is not hopeless but a tale of doing your best against all odds, and seeking light amidst darkness, which is the purpose of the two love stories. During my own stint in war, we had a stray dog that my unit found/adopted, and we made sure it had food and clean water and worried about its safety even as we fought. Some would consider this absurd, but those same people have never, I would guess, been surrounded by such bleakness. We loved that dog all the more precisely because he was an antidote to the realities around us. I never checked on him after I came home—was too afraid of what the news might be—and of course he’s long-dead by now, but he had about 30 owners fussing over him when I left.

Thief and The Insider are (IMO) the two best Michael Mann films you haven't seen yet.

And yes just a couple more points: John Cameron was the man whose family they visited at the beginning (and the blonde woman was John’s wife, not Uncas’ or Nathaniel’s). Jack Winthrop was the colonial at the fort who had negotiated with the British and raised the militia, and then talked about not being beholden to England if they wouldn’t honor their promises. And yes, Magua is a very interesting character—on a total hero’s journey of never giving up and coming back against all odds, but we don’t START the story with him, so he isn’t OUR hero. I’d really recommend you guys re-watch it and pay close attention, it’s too good a story to leave somewhat confused. 😁

Yes, I think this is actually one of the best and last sweeping adventure/romance films, and they don’t truly make this kind of a movie anymore. It was interesting that Dan and Sam seen it as a war film because I had never looked at it through that lens. I was devastated after Alice through herself off the cliff because Uncas had been killed. Such a beautifully shot movie.

This is my favorite Michael Mann film. Such a sweeping epic. I think you were a bit confused because the Mohawk tribe and the Mohican tribe were not the same, and it was the Mohawks who helped Colonel Monroe kill Magua’s children. Daniel Day Lewis and Madeline Stowe have such great chemistry. The soundtrack is awesome, and it’s great to listen while you workout. It took me a couple of times watching it to fully understand everything because there is so much going on. Nice reaction.

Such beautiful cinematography, score and tragic plot lines. Not sure if you picked up on the blossoming romance between Uncas and Alice, which is why she chose to take that step in the end. Duncan’s redemption arc reminds me of A Tale of Two Cities, and Sidney Carton’s sacrifice for Lucy, who didn’t love him. I’m thinking Dickens lifted that from James Fenimore Cooper! Nathaniel, aka Natty Bumppo, aka Hawkeye, aka the Deerslayer, among other names, is the main character in the Leatherstocking Tales, and he goes by many names, depending on who is referring to him. I’m kind of sad you didn’t seem to enjoy it, although I do think it depicted the hardships of frontier life, particularly when caught in the crossfire of war. A sharp contrast in Daniel Day Lewis’ acting chops would be A Room With a View, where he plays the awkward, priggish Cecil. So different!

The Blue Ridge of North Carolina has never been depicted so beautifully.

Think i saw this Film about 30 Times ;) After Romancing the Stone this is my Favorite Adventure Film (Very Different Movies, I Know ;)... Alone the Ending with the great Music is so well done !!! (Yes it was Sad, but the so fantastic Directing from Michael Mann !!!After this Masterpiece you must Watch Kevin Costner's "Dancing With Wolves" !!! You will love this ;) West Studi (Magua) is also the Villian in this

I’ve been to that cliff (of the last scene) in North Carolina. You get up there via a freight elevator that they load WAY too many people in at a time. 😁 Anyway, thank you for checking out one of my all-time favorites.

Love this movie both this version the 1936 movie and also the books the Deerslayer and The Last of the Mohicans. You are right Montcalm knew that the British would not send them home so he decided to use Magua to eliminate the problems. The battle of the fort and the massacre were actually based on true events. Michael Mann decided to rename his main character to Nathaniel because his Indian name from the books was Natti Bumpoand didn’t think it sounded good. In the other movies and books the English and colonist called him Hawkeye and the French enemies called him Le Long Caribine. Native Americans recorded their history with the beaded belt of different colors and patterns to tell the story. That is what Hawkeye was holding in his hands when he entered the Huron village. The reason they hit, cut and clubbed him was because they feared him and the Huron Warriors wanted to count coup (prestige) by doing so.

Spectacular...love this movie. Michael Mann is probably best known for Heat (as you mentioned), and other modern crime movies; but, this is easily one of my favorite period pieces. The acting (Daniel Day-Lewis, obviously; but, also Wes Studi) is phenomenal, the action scenes are epic, the romance hits where it's supposed to; but, I think one of my favorite aspects of the movie is the music, which manages to uplift and soar without manipulating your emotions. Fuck, I sound pretentious! Ah, well. Great movie. Going to watch this while I eat.

This was filmed just outside Ashville, NC. A great place to visit if you're looking for a nice getaway. The motorcycle riding is top notch.
