While I impatiently refresh hoping French Connection has gone up I just remembered, I was going to look when I made my previous comment, but I forgot: your vote matters! The French Connection beat Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels by two smoking votes (it had been only one when I looked at it last). Third place was only off by five votes, too (Donnie Brasco).

Hopefully if the 2004 movie does win a Denzel poll they will also throw in the original beforehand.

I would be pretty bummed if they watch the 2004 Manchurian Candidate first, which is a strong possibility since many here mentioned it when they asked for more Denzel recs. I suspect the only way they would react to the original is if it won the monthly drawing.

I've said it before and so has someone else, but I'm going to echo one of the commenters here in recommending French Connection II. The reasons it's good are mostly different from the original, especially given how the original ends, but Hackman is just as good in the movie for different reasons, and the movie has a spectacular chase sequence that cleverly subverts that of the original movie. It's ludicrous, but the effectiveness is undeniable.
Also, the same commenter I'm agreeing with above mentioned To Live and Die From L.A., also from Friedkin, which is another easy next step from French Connection, but if you also do French Connection II, I can add that you should check out the original Manchurian Candidate, by FCII director John Frankenheimer. A masterful thriller. Also worth checking out: the 2004 remake by Silence of the Lambs director Jonathan Demme, starring Denzel Washington.

Unlike Sling Blade, To Live and Die in L.A. is at least fully in-print on home video, and in fact even available in 4K from Kino Lorber.

The Americans is my favorite multi-season drama of the last ten years, and I'm pretty sure most reactors (including Daniel & Sam) would love it too, but I'm not sure enough of the general public caught it when it aired to be glued to reactions to it now. The people who did, though, would be HARDCORE about watching those reactions.

I still like the idea of TV shows for Patreon, with youtube to get them later when you have time to edit. I miss having a top-tier, multi-season show to watch since The Sopranos ended.
The Wire would be incredible on this channel (I'd also take Deadwood or The Newsroom!)

Yeah I've watched a few of his reactions and he does pick up and elaborate on key filmmaking aspects that I wouldn't have otherwise noticed, but when it comes to internalizing the themes and meanings of the story he just watched it's basically static.

I've seen him on YouTube. He comes off a bit pretentious, always analyzing the shots and expressing his technical filmmaking interpretations. I just want to watch a normal reaction. He seems like a good dude but I think I would strangle him to shut him up while watching a movie with him. LOL

The main drawback to putting To Live And Die on the schedule would be a Slingblade scenario where they could certainly get a copy to react to but people who want to watch along would be out of luck because it's not streaming.

This is going to be random, but a while back in the Coming to America reaction, Schmitt said he could watch an entire movie of just dancing.
In case you were serious about that (and if you haven't already seen it), you might like Center Stage (2000). It's a movie about a group of dancers trying to break into the professional ballet world (it also marks the film debut of Amanda Schull and Zoe Saldana).

Hope you consider French Connection 2 at some point(even though probably only 5 people here have seen it), very underrated sequel, from John Frankenheimer, the director of Ronin. Also To Live and Die In LA(which has done ok in polls) which has another great chase scene from William Friedkin (the director of The French Connection)

There’s not too much rhyme or reason! We definitely take into account all the recommendations we get and then what makes sense for timing between shows we want to watch that are more currently, like Cobra Kai! Our goal is to start implementing more TV on Patreon and then whenever those are eventually edited they’d go up on YT but we haven’t gotten there yet for a filming schedule. Thank you for the recommendations!

I’m curious about your overall approach to TV series. They’re obviously a big commitment, and some are purely too long to be practical. Others have probably mentioned these before, but I’ll list four great but short runs.
Twin Peaks (2 seasons)
Deadwood (3 seasons)
Rome (2 seasons)
The Third Day (just 6 episodes, and it’s a great thriller)
All of these are excellent productions, and the bottom three are HBO. All of them are very engaging, and I’m a hard-sell for series.

The Bridge over the River Kwai is the definition of 80s parenting for me. I'm Belgian and I remember watching this movie over and over again, before I learned how to read subtitles... So I must have been 5 or 6 years old. Which is absolutely insane when you watch that movie.

What a great week! If you haven't already watched it, try to get ahold of an uncensored version of The French Connection. Disney owns the film now, via their acquisition of 20th Century Fox, and apparently made the bad decision to censor a racial slur uttered by Gene Hackman's character early in the film. It's not a deal breaker if you have to watch the censored version as it only amounts to about three missing seconds but movies should be left the way their filmmakers intended. The censoring only affects streaming copies and I haven't heard anything to suggest that Disney decided to reinstate the missing seconds due to public pressure.

Watched a couple eps of the new CK. Dig it. THE FRENCH CONNECTION is probably one of the first elaborate car chases ever. Billy Friedkin was the man back in his day. Also introduced us to Popeye Doyle. I had lunch once with Ed O'Neill who played Popeye in a TV movie which he made fun of when the killer was wearing sneakers, but the sound guy had him clomping up the stairs.
