Respectfully, I strongly disagree. The movie is great, and I'm saying that as someone who has loved the book well over 30 years now. I used to read it at work during breaks before these cellphones existed, or internet on them. So I've read the first book probably upwards of 50 times (at a conservative estimate), and the rest of the 6 books something like 4 times.
But most likely unlike you, I also have been involved in amateur movie productions, and I've actually been interested in film-making -- not as a career, but just wanted to understand the medium. So I can see how every decision they made for the movie improved it AS A MOVIE. It might've changed the details, but it stayed true to the core of the book.
It feels like the book, it looks like the book, and it stays true to the message. It has dropped things, and concentrated on other things, but it very rarely contradicts the book. Furthermore, it implies a lot of things, but by and large they are all changes that improved the film (as a film). Making book 1 to 1 into a film or TV series will always suck.
The TV series wasn't true to the books, either. But it still followed too close to be peak TV, and definitely had way too bad actors and wardrobe to be even worth rewatching. I remember watching it when it came out on SciFi Channel -- I was visiting US at the time. I wasn't impressed then, and even less when I rewatched it not long ago.

People said the same about Lord of the Rings. No great movie exists without its detractors.

That is completely understandable, I also had my share of experiences where I was disappointed in a movie that was based on a book I read prior. Still, I know you probably don't mean it like that, but while it is totally cool to say you are disappointed and sure have your reasons for it, saying it is a disappointing movie and not you were disappointed is kinda souring the enjoyment other people can still have with this movie. I am sorry that it wasn't for you. I enjoyed it very much, especially the soundtrack and cinematography.

Disappointing movie. They diverged so much fro Herbert’s Dune it is not funny. And how are the Great Houses to fight when they have no Spice for the Spacing Guild Navigators. The Spice must flow. Without it there is no space travel because the Navigator Guild will go blind. I suggest you read the book and watch the SciFi channel Dune miniseries. Of all the productions it followed the story the most faithfully. Cutting out Paul and Chani’s son and the birth of his sister. In the book Paul finds out that the universe/fate had this planned and all the machination of the Reverend Mothers were for naught. I miss Paul teaching the Fremen the wyrding way of fighting.

Some "interesting" story choices that probably play better if you're not familiar with the source material. That said, the two films together are an incredible achievement. Loved the reaction.

I hope you give the Villeneuve film Incendies a shot someday. Was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the 2011 Academy Awards.

Honestly I'd call the one on Arrakis/Dune "bad" too because for all her eons of wisdom and telepathy and prescience... she didn't think to ask Jessica if she has any "preexisting conditions" that may go funny with the Water. xD

Hi guys! I think I speak for a lot of your fans when I say "Sorry you couldn't get the full blast theatrical experience (the audio is amazing even in regular 2D let alone IMAX) but this film is great even at home! And you seem to have expensive earphones and other hardware so it'll still be great!"

They should have focused on trying to change the gender inheritence laws instead. xD

I understand and support this, but I really didn't like the substitution of the Reverend Mother/BG being the Sole Architect of the destruction of House Atteides.

The Bene Gesserit are trying to create the super being. That is their goal. However, they want it to be someone they can control, if such a person can be controlled. That is why the emperor's Truth Sayer is kind of playing all sides and seems like a hypocrite when it comes to Paul. She realizes at some point that he probably is the one but also realizes that he cannot be controlled, at least by her. The flaw in their plan is that they think they could actually control such a person. By definition it seems like the "super being" would not be controllable.

I’d bet dollars to donuts that the studio will re-release Dune parts 1 & 2 in IMax if and when the third Dune movie is released.

When they were trying to find ways to reduce the amount of exposition needed, they made the decision to mostly exclude the Navigators so that there was a little less being thrown at somebody new to the material. And, as mentioned, they are much more prominent in later books, so it made sense to shift them into another movie.
If I remember correctly, the 1984 version actually brought stuff forward from later books to present the Navigators in their mutated form.

Aww, this was such a treat to watch along! Love to see you both so invested and with your jaws in the lap during the opening sequence. One of your best reactions :) Just a shame you did not make it to the IMAX screening which was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, to say the least.

Video game trivia - The actress who plays the "bad" reverend mother (Charlotte Rampling) was the basis for the character design of The Boss in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

They're a lot more prominent in the 2nd book, so hopefully we'll see them in the next movie.

Third time I've seen the movie, but this question suddenly occurred to me - where the hell are the Spacer / Guild Navigators?

Did yo recognise the voice of the Reverend mother dressed in black?
Charlotte Rampling, she played Dexter's therapist / surrogate mother-creator Dr Evelyn Vogel.
