Whiplash (2014) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Miles Teller also played Willard in the 2011 version of Footloose! I'm an '80s baby and love the original Footloose, however, I love the 2011 version so much more! The newer movie is more country in its music than the original. Miles Teller is fantastic in it, too! He's such an awesome dancer. The director even called Miles his secret weapon! Miles played drums as a kid along with piano, and saxophone. He had to brush up on drums for this movie, and the piano for Top Gun: Maverick (2022). He actually played the piano and sang 'Great Balls of Fire' in the movie. It's even on the soundtrack! Miles Teller's scars are VERY real! He got in a crazy bad car accident driving from NYU to his parent's house in FL. He was ejected from the vehicle through the windshield and was covered in glass and bleeding profusely! He was damn lucky to have survived! He's now had many reconstructive surgeries to help get rid of the scarring. He had a hard time getting roles at first because of it. His first film was Rabbit Hole (2010). He played a teenager who was driving and hit and killed a little boy. His scars actually helped him to get that role! Now that he's shown what a great actor he is! He's gotten so many more roles! The Directors aren't so worried about his scars, anymore! Miles is so talented all around! I'm a musician myself, and I just love seeing someone so passionate about their craft! I have loved all of his movies, but Top Gun: Maverick is by far my favorite!

what a great film! JK Simmons deserved that oscar--he was sooooo intense!!!

I’ll check that out! I’ll throw Amadeus (1984) in too, also a film about failure and greatness (and incredible music). I think it might be one of my top 20 favorite films.

There's a great film that came out in 2021 called The Novice that sort of reminded me of Whiplash. From a first time female director(who was the sound editor on Whiplash). It's on Netflix. 93% on RT.

Great movie. I have a lot of patience and can tolerate a lot of shit, but if I were Niemann, I would have stabbed fletcher to death with my drumsticks

Well written! I disagree that this was a formal plan from Fletcher, I do agree with Sam in that he was getting back at Neimann in the end, but he certainly changed tactics when he finally saw his seed come to fruition. So, in a way, Fletcher adjusted in the end to make his great plan work. Also, I never saw his father's face as horror (maybe there was some of that, that's an interesting perspective) but I think he saw greatness. Seeing greatness might have an aspect of horror, or terror, but I think it was also exhilaration and disbelief that this his own child is making this incredible music. So it might have been horror rolled up with a lot of other emotions of astonishment in the mix.

Miles Teller played drums in most of the scenes, he was a drummer in his teens and I guess early 20s, so he was reasonably competent. As far as I know they used a pro drummer as a double in the most difficult parts, especially that final performance, obviously that was very technical. But overall I think Teller has done a great job.

I felt bad for Sam at certain parts of this because of how uncomfortable she was, lol. ;) But I'm glad you both ended up liking it. It's an intense film to be sure, but it's one of my absolute favorites. This is ultimately a film about the dangers of becoming consumed by obsession. Both Fletcher and Neimann were men obsessed with a singular goal: achieving musical greatness, no matter the cost, be it friends, family, love, or happiness. Fletcher became a monster in his pursuit and he desperately searched for others who he could mold in his image. He degraded and abused who knows how many students in vain until Neimann finally came along. I'm always struck at the end by how Fletcher and Neimann feed off of each other. Fletcher wasn't after revenge against Neimann when he invited him under false pretenses to play at that JVC event. No, he hoped that if he threw one more proverbial cymbal at Neimanns' head he'd finally transform him into his own Charlie Parker. He manipulated, humiliated, and abused him every step of the way. And when Neimann's obsession was complete and he began playing the drum solo of a lifetime, all the personal drama between the two men fell away and they became one singular force. Not even the intensity of hatred or the desire for revenge was strong enough to get in between them at that moment. Fletcher had finally found his protege, his Charlie Parker, and he was quite pleased. Neimann had found greatness, but at what cost? He sought the approval of Fletcher, who didn't care about him at all--he was only an object, after all, an instrument in his obsessive desire. Meanwhile, we see in the final shot of Neimann's father the look of horror in his eyes as he sees his son become consumed at last by obsession. It's my favorite shot in the whole movie, a great piece of acting by Paul Reiser, which is saying something in a film full of great performances, most notably J.K. Simmons portrayal of Terrence Fletcher.

So great. One of the best movies of the last 15 years.

Daniel N

In the end, Andrew chooses Fletcher's way--the way of greatness--over his own humanity.

Thank you for the Holiday drop! Happy 4th!

Or ask for pictures of Spider-Man. XD

This was a recent first time watch for me too, can't wait to see what you guys thought :)

Oh, this movie is fucking brutal, and I LOVE IT! J.K. SImmons has always been such a phenomenal actor, and this was a perfect vehicle for him to unleash. But I don't know what's more brutal: getting slapped in the face (and everything else) by J.K. Simmons, or letting yourself dump Supergirl for...drums.

Steve Mercier

When JK Simmons won the Oscar. He missed the opportunity to say,"Not quite my tempo" after the applause. Damn!!! Would have been perfect.

James

Great. Happy 4th of July

Will Zamora

ah the movie that gives people panic attacks.
