Like most of the commenters here, I also highly recommend 48hrs. It also happens to have an actor you may recognize from an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie.

I love this film. It's so well crafted and I love stories like this where there's humour but the story itself is serious. There's a real warmth to this film and its characters. Mikey drunkenly saying that he loves Axel. Jenny's face lighting up when she meets Axel and her visible sadness when she hears about Mikey. Of course the developping relationship between Axel, Rosewood, Taggart and finally Bogomil. You liked them all.
I always enjoyed the relationship between Axel and Jenny. When I saw this film as a teen I thought it was novel to have a loving but platonic relationship between a man and a woman in an 80's cop movie. Turns out the original script had them get romantic but when Murphy became the lead that was changed because the producers didn't want to perturb certain audiences with an interracial couple, especially a Black man with a White woman. Turns out that not so long ago a foolproof way to prevent a woman to only be cast as a love interest in a genre movie was racism. Goddamn.
There's a lot of previously featured on this channel actors in this movie. Some have been noted in other comments but I'll make a list:
Paul Reiser (Jeffrey) - Burke in Aliens
Michael Champion (Casey the grey-haired henchman that knocks out Axel and gets shot by Billy) - Helm (Michael Ironside's goon with the glasses) in Total Recall.
Ronny Cox (Bogomil) - Dick Jones in Robocop and also in Total Recall as the Big Bad Cohagen (he has to :"Give these people aiiirer!')
Steven Berkoff (Maitland) - The evil Russian officer Podovsky in Rambo 2.
John Ashton (Taggart) - Rival bounty hunter Marvin in Midnight Run.
Finally, Martin Brest directed Midnight Run and Scent of a Woman.
People have been recommending 48hrs since it's Murphy's first movie and a very important film. Directed by Walter Hill ( Red Heat) it's very much the father of the buddy cop movies and the probably the clearest example of the form before Lethal Weapon. However, I might need to rewatch it. I wasn't as enamored by it as some. I found it to be a harsh film, and I really disliked some aspect of it. I don't want to go into it so you can have a clear head if you watch it. It's still a cornerstone of Murphy's career.
I prefer some other Walter Hill movies like his first film Hard Times, and his more outlandish movies like The Warriors and Streets of Fire really agree with me. Those are really fun and Streets in particular is a really unique genre-bending movie.

Murphy during an opening monologue on SNL a few months after the release of Best Defense : "After I did 48 Hours and Trading Places, all these scripts started coming from everywhere, and I picked up a script called Best Defense. There’s a movie that sucked real bad! At first, I wasn’t going to do it because I read the script, and I felt like I was an actor at first. But the money they gave me to do Best Defense, y’all would have done Best Defense too, OK? ... I was like, 'What?! How dare you give me a script like this! Oh, that much money? Let’s go!' Best Defense turned out to be the worst movie ever done in the history of anything, and all of a sudden, I wasn’t that hot no more. So, I called up the producer of Saturday Night Live, and I go, 'Um, you still got my dressin’ room?'"

Simpson and Bruckheimer were dynamite together but I don't think Don Simpson reigned in anybody. He was a infamous coke fiend and party animal. He died at 52 of heart failure caused by using copious amount and mixes of hard drugs.
Even if he had lived beyond 1996, "The Rock" would have been the last Simpson/Bruckheimer collab because the latter ended the partnership during productiondue to Simpson's escalating drug use and erratic work behaviour.
From this article https://filmstarfacts.com/2015/03/04/don-simpson-producer-1943-1996/ : "Drugs were not his only obsession, however. Simpson also had a most bizarre sex life, enhanced by testosterone shots administered to his buttocks to increase his already enormous sex drive. Call girl Alexandra Datig wrote, in her ‘tell all’ book about Hollywood and hookers, that he regularly ‘auditioned’ struggling actresses for parts in his movies, and ‘by the end of each interview each actress ended up having sex with him’. I should add that very few established actresses fell for this, but those who did would later learn to their disgust that he had secretly videotaped their encounters as well."
From this book cited on wiki (Biskind, Peter (1998). Easy Riders, Raging Bulls: How the Sex-Drugs-and-Rock 'N' Roll Generation Saved Hollywood.) "According to director Robert Altman, Simpson opposed the proposed casting of Shelley Duvall as Olive Oyl for the project Popeye by standing up at a 1979 meeting of studio executives and saying, "Well, I wouldn't want to fuck her. And if I don't want to fuck her, she shouldn't be in the movie."
In short, Don Simpson was quite the character.

Flight of the Navigator, yes!
I think they should go on an 80s kids' movie run sometime:
Explorers
BNX Bandits
The Monster Squad
Adventures in Babysitting
SpaceCamp
Three O'Clock High
The Boy Who Could Fly
Future Boy

Some 80s movies you'd love:

Short Circuit 1 & 2
Labyrinth
Masters of the Universe
Cocoon & Cocoon: The Return

I'll echo what a bunch of others say: Check out "48 Hrs." Eddie Murphy's first movie, and despite what people tell you, it is NOT a comedy, though it has funny moments. Murphy was huge bc of SNL and "Delirious," but became a superstar based on one scene in "48 Hrs." You'll know it when you see it.

In case you are wondering the guy playing Axel’s fellow cop is Paul Reiser, he was recently in Stranger Things. The actor playing Serge is Bronson Pinchot, he was in the TV show Perfect Strangers. And lastly Martin Brest played the checkout clerk.

A great reaction to a film I've seen and loved dozens of times! I can't wait for part 2, which is my favourite in the series. It's got everything great from the first one, but with better action and a better story.

Beverly Hills Cop 2 is a blast as well. The 3rd one is 'ok', not as good as the first two, but still enjoyable, in my opinion. But might as well watch it since there's going to be a 4th on soon 😄. One Eddie Murphy I really liked, specially cause I'm a parent, is Daddy Day Care. I think it was really funny and adorable, so hopefully you guys could check it out. Great reaction as always! 💜

So, on a quick note about the hotel price, $235 is appx. $715 today according to the ole' inflation calculator, and a room at the Beverly Hills Hotel, which this was copying is around $1200-$1800 today, depending on the time of year, so a relative deal. The actual hotel is from the Biltmore, which is in LA proper, not Beverly Hills.
Also, the building shown for the Beverly Hills PD isn't the police department, but is is Beverly Hills City Hall.

Great reaction! Don't wait too long to watch the other two so you can catch up to the new one coming out next month on Netflix! By the way, you guys watched Midnight Run directed by Martin Brest, which also starred John Ashton who plays Taggart.
Also, the guy who plays Billy is Judge Reinhold. He was really big in the 1980s with these films, as well as the 1982 teen comedy Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and he plays the stepdad in the Tim Allen Santa Clause films.

You should obviously watch BHC2 and 48 Hours, but a guilty pleasure favorite of mine is the much maligned bomb "Showtime". It stars Robert DeNiro, Eddie Murphy, and Rene Russo and I love it for some reason. Also, a couple years before his turn as Donkey in Shrek, he voiced the sidekick in Disney's Mulan. Excellent movie if you haven't watched it yet.

Eddie Murphy turned down Ghostbusters to star in this film. Both movies were of course massive hits, so it definitely worked out in the end. Edit: And now that I finished watching it I must say that one of the reasons I quite enjoy it among so many reasons is seeing Ronny Cox actually play a good guy.

OK, everyone has mentioned some of the usual suspects, including 48 Hrs., The Golden Child, and Harlem Nights, among others. However, there are a couple of late-career Murphy gems about filmmaking, both of which I think you'd really love. The first one is his on-screen team-up with Steve Martin, in the 1999 movie Bowfinger, directed by Frank Oz (the voice of Yoda and Ms. Piggy, and the director of other classics like Little Shop of Horrors and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels). Martin also had a bit of a lull during the '90s alongside Murphy, and the movie was a return-to-form for both of them. Even more recently, he starred as underground cult figure Rudy Ray Moore in Dolemite is My Name (2019), a comedian who made a splash when he started making cheap exploitation movies. Frankly, Murphy should've won an Oscar for his performance as Moore, and the film also features a breakout performance by DaVine Joy Randolph, who did actually win an Oscar a few months ago for her role in The Holdovers.

He actually gave an interview somewhat recently saying he has developed some stuff since.
Another movie he directed that is on the channel that I think is better than Beverly Hills Cop and Scent of a Woman is Midnight Run, which is more in the same vein as BHC.

The eighties was great even when it was bad, because even the bad stuff was enjoyable for the cheese and cringe.
That theme is actually titled "Axel F", and there is a Chevy Chase movie called "Fletch" that Harold Faltermeyer also did, and was also used when Chevy's character was doing his thing just like in this one with Axel.

Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer were involved with most of the great action movies in the 80s and 90s, but at some point it was just Bruckheimer (I think Simpson died), and it became clear that Simpson was reigning in Bruckheimer because the action was turned up to 11,000 when Bruckheimer was by himself. :D

Beverly Hills Cop 2 is pretty good, maybe even better than the original from pure action standpoint. Third one was kind of meh, maybe one time watch just to complete the trilogy, but it got a bit stale.
PS: Martin Brest also directed "Scent of a Woman", which is kinda crazy change from Beverly Hills Cop style comedy.

Eddie Murphy's filmography is really spotty. Once he started having kids, he only wanted to make more "family-friendly" fare and became more of a PG-rated kind of star. He always planned to return to movies more aimed at adults once the kids were grown.
The problem is that he never stopped having kids (most recently in 2018), so making the kind of films he started out making happened less and less often.

There is a genuinely wholesome friendship in these films between Foley, Rosewood and Taggart and I LOVE the sequel to this. Tony Scott comes in and just REALLY takes a hard swing. It's smokey and lit with neon and sexy... but the core of Foley, Rosewood and Taggart is what makes it work.
I can't wait for you to see the sequel. It just rips so fuckin hard. Also find me three dudes in action movies at this time that were more comfortable saying "I love you"... you can't! SUPER WHOLESOME

You part where Axel is walking down the street in Beverly Hills, two guys in red leather suits pass him, and he has to stop and laugh is an homage to the red leather suit he wore for his comedy special Delirious which came out the year before.

It's crazy that the Axel F theme song(which as you note was a joke in Family Guy) reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1984. And was a top 5 hit in many countries. There are no words to describe how much of a cultural phenomenon this movie was in 1984.

2024-06-05 07:34:16 +0000 UTC
Eddie Murphy was already a big name in the 80s for his comedy and of course the early movies he did (Trading Places and 48 Hours), but after this movie came out, he was THE guy. Like, it was him, Michael Jackson (Music) and Arnold Schwarzenegger (Action, with Stallone RIGHT behind him).
But, Eddie in particular was just so fuckin' cool. And yes, I do recommend the sequels. BHCII might be my favorite out of the films, because it was PRIME Eddie. BHCIII is considered the weaker of the films, but it's not as BAD as people claim to be. Plus, I think it's vital to watch now considering Beverly Hills Cop IV is coming out THIS JULY.
As for other Murphy movies, if we're still going 80s, my personal favorites are "Harlem Nights" and "The Golden Child". So many quotable lines in both. In the meantime, thank you for finally reacting to this one! I can't wait to see if you do Part II next.
