Lost in Translation (2003) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

I haven’t watched this movie since back in the day, and really enjoyed your reaction. I think “lost in translation” is a euphemism for many other things, including some of our relationships, and dealing with daily challenges of life. Sophia’s work tends to examine subtleties, and that’s really a lot harder to do than recording bombast. It’s not for everyone, and certainly not for all occasions, but there’s beauty to be found.

You could make a poll exclusively of Wes Anderson/Bill Murray collaborations.

Just thinking now: funny coincidence that both movies should have Scarlett Johansson in them. Also: if Faris *is* inspired by Cameron Diaz (I've since read that Coppola didn't just not confirm this but outright denied it), then her character is promoting a movie that in reality represents a movie (Charlie's Angels) that featured...Bill Murray.

Another great Bill Murray movie is The Life Aquatic

I love this movie. All of Sofia Coppola’s movies are worth checking out. She has a way of bringing out so much in what initially seems so little.

The Virgin Suicides is great, as others have said, and her Priscilla movie would be a great double feature with Baz Luhrman's Elvis!

What a funny Intro:) This is one of the Films that i really don't like at first time Watching in the Cinema Back in 2003 ... Years later i really Liked it ... I recommend "The Virgin Suicides" from Sofia Coppola with Kirsten Dunst, Kathleen Turner and Danny deVito

Their chemistry was amazing

I remember being stationed in Japan back in '90/'91 and seeing Arnold Schwarzenegger in an ad for some sort of energy shot . I almost lost my mind. It also had me wondering if he had an thick Austrian accent in Japanese. If you have 5 minutes, check his commercials out below https://youtu.be/6s8qn_PKbiA?si=0LsD866ZY6iIarY2

Ah...Sofia Coppola's ode to loneliness. Love Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson here. Subtle, real, and popping with chemistry. Want to punch Anna Farris in the mouth...but I mean that as a compliment to Anna Farris, who acted the hell out of her part here.

George Clooney talked about doing foreign commercials (as well as Nespresso) in one of round-table interviews, and was completely unapologetic and up-front about it. He said, he can get a few million dollars for very little effort, which in turn allowed him to finance his smaller independent/side projects. So all in all, it's a good thing, if you are looking to be independent from the "big" studios.

You don't see many chaste romances is American movies, and even fewer movies with such little plot--yet this works so beautifully. If you're interested in more from Sofia, I've always liked her first one, The Virgin Suicides (1999).

The intro was fucking great. Sam breaking up mid promo was too funny. Thank you so much for keeping that in. I almost want to watch the Godfather 3 reaction again lol.

In addition to what Ellie said above, that Anna Faris is rumored to be based on Cameron Diaz (although I don't know if Coppola ever actually confirmed that considering it's mildly insulting), Johansson's husband, played by Giovanni Ribisi, is based on director Spike Jonze, because he was Coppola's husband at one point. Years later, Jonze made the film Her, in which he depicts his protagonist in a relationship with a woman played by Rooney Mara, who apparently was based on Coppola. Not that you can glean anything from it, really, but it's interesting how in these two films you can get a glimpse into their relationship from their respective points of view. I admit I haven't watched this yet (probably tomorrow), so I don't have anything to say about the reaction itself, but I definitely hope you do more Sofia Coppola on the channel, namely her film Marie Antoinette. I'd also love to see Jonze's classics Being John Malkovich and Adaptation get a reaction (and they should be watched in that order, for reasons you'll understand if you watch them). Also, less prestigious but important to me, and tangentially relevant: I hope Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is in the cards at some point. I know it didn't get great reviews but I'd love to see what you think of it.

For some background, pre-internet a lot of celebrities like Brad Pitt who would never do a commercial in America accepted ridiculous amounts of money to do commercials in Japan. The thinking was that no one was ever going to see them over here because how could they. Sofia Coppola’s dad endorsed Santory whiskey. Also the rumor was that Anna Faris character is based on Cameron Diaz. This is Bill Murray's personal favorite film. People who are married or in couples might not respond to it as much. This movie is really about lonely people. And when you find someone you connect with, it really means a lot and it becomes significantly special. Someone needs to do a documentary about the Coppola family. Sofia’s father Francis Ford Coppola directed some of the greatest movies of all time. Her aunt Talia Shire was Adrian in the Rocky movies. And when Sofia won the Oscar for best screenplay, people were wondering why Nicolas Cage was sitting by her family cheering very loudly. It’s because he’s her cousin. Nicolas Cage’s father is Francis Ford Coppola’s brother.
