Spinal Tap did "The Black Album" before Metallica ever conceived of such a thing.

Several commenters above have mentioned that Christopher Guest (Nigel) came off this experience and created a series of movies using a strong core of talented improv actors and comedians.
All are good comedies, well worth watching, but by far the best is Best in Show, a good natured parody of dog shows, particularly the Westminster. It may be the funniest movie ever, including the best work by Monty Python.
A Mighty Wind does for folk music what Spinal Tap does for Rock'n'Roll. And it includes Guest, McKean, and Shearer playing an old folk group called the Folksmen. Again they write all of their own music, they are talented musicians, and I would put the soundtrack of this movie up against any of Spinal Tap's albums.
Finally, as of two months ago, filming began on Spinal Tap II (does that mean Spinal Tap 2 or Spinal Tap 11?) in New Orleans. the major cast members are all returning, and Rob Reiner is directing.

I had made this comment before on a post where the comments were deleted, but while I understand it's a bummer that music can't make it to YouTube, I hadn't realized until you mentioned it in your Amelie introduction that you were avoiding musical and music-based movies for that reason. I really hope you reconsider as you would be missing out on tons of great films, from classic musicals like Singin' in the Rain to more contemporary classics like Moulin Rouge!. I think the vast majority of your audience understands that music will have to be muted, and will be happy to go for the full-length watch-alongs if they want to hear the songs.
On top of the two I already mentioned, I especially hope you'll check out a trio of other classic 1980s musical comedies: The Blues Brothers (1980), Little Shop of Horrors (1986) -- please watch the director's cut with the original ending!, and "Weird Al" Yankovic's movie UHF (1989).

This was done because they had already recorded commentaries as themselves for The Criterion Collection, which were included on their LaserDisc and out-of-print DVD, so there are actually three very good commentary tracks for the movie out there.

Yes, I really hope When Harry Met Sally comes to the channel.

Christopher Guest is most famous for doing several movies in this same style, the improvised documentary format. They include Waiting for Guffman (1996), Best in Show (2000), A Mighty Wind (2003), and For Your Consideration (2006). He is also somewhat famously married to Jamie Lee Curtis.

I've seen this flick once. I think I was in Fort Hood and super inebriated. All I remember is "11."

If you have the bluray/dvd of Spinal Tap, the commentary is worth watching. They do the whole commentary in character, and it is hilarious.

No worries, Sam. It will probably be made available again and then I can go back and watch the full reaction. 🙂

Classic film and a great reaction. There's lots of "in" humor here - like Nigel playing his solo with a violin on the guitar is a riff on Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin who did solos with a violin bow. Also the "Heavy Metal" umlaut over the "N"" in Spinal Tap.
The actors did indeed play and write the music.
Other cameos in the film you may have missed: Dana Carvey and Billy Crystal as the mime waiters, Angelica Huston as the scenic artist who built the 18" Stonehenge, Bruno Kirby (City Slickers, Godfather Part II) as the limo driver, Paul Schaeffer (David Letterman's band leader) as the promoter in Chicago.
BTW, great line :"Is there another divider they can put up?"

If you are ever looking for a pure heartwarming Rob Reiner movie, doesn't have to be on the channel, "Flipped" is absolutely wonderful and a total lift you up on a rainy day kind of movie.

Spinal Tap I feel is kind of similar as a movie like Napoleon Dynamite. A great source of joy and fun is when you revisit, or using the jokes amongst friends. The amount of bands I've been in that have jokingly imitated parts of this movie. Especially the getting lost back stage and yelling "Rock n Roll!!!"

As someone who's been a part of a music scene since my childhood this movie is dear to me and my friends' heart. As famed rock and roller Ronnie James Dio said "I've seen it all, the pods, the girlfriends, the multiple drummers', the band dynamics, it's all true"
It's a perfect parody of the glam rock scene and a flawless encapsulation of any band on the road. And if you watch a real documentary like "Decline of Western Civilization Part II" you'll see that this movie is not far from reality.
Other "mockumentaries" worth your watch would be Best in Show or Drop Dead Gorgeous

The air force lieutenant was played by Fred Willard. He goes on to bigger roles in the later Christopher Guest movies and steals every second he's on the screen.

This is just a master class in improv. Apparently they shot hours and hours on film and edited it down to under 90 minutes. That sucks that it's so hard to find, but luckily for me I bought it on Amazon a few years ago. Definitely worth the purchase as I find something new every time I watch!

Haha going over this list reminds me that Ed Begley Jr was among the unfortunate drummers... and also ended up in Better Call Saul.

Michael McKean (David) is probably most known today for playing Chuck McGill on Better Call Saul.
Christopher Guest (Nigel) appeared in many Rob Reiner films like The Princess Bride, but he was also the crooked doctor in A Few Good Men. He's also a british lord and married Jamie Lee Curtis the year This is Spinal Tap came out. They are still together.
Harry Shearer (Derek) is one of the lead voices on The Simpsons portraying Flanders, Skinner and Kent Brockman among many.
The film features many early appearances or cameos by great actors. You've spotted Fran Drescher, but the mimes were played by Billy Crystal and Dana Carvey. The driver obsessed with Sinatra was Bruno Kirby (young Clemenza in Godfather II). Anjelica Huston (Morticia Addams in the Addams Family) as the designer of the Stonehenge "monument".

Y'all may already be up to speed on this, but you didn't mention it, so some other Rob Reiner movies (besides "The Princess Bride") that you have watched on the channel:
"Misery"
"A Few Good Men"
"Stand By Me"
Some more I'd recommend: "When Harry Met Sally", "The Bucket List" and "The American President".

And his Tap bandmates, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer, are involved in those three films in different capacities, either as an actor or songwriter.

Now that you've finally seen and enjoyed this one, I feel more comfortable suggesting Waiting For Guffman, Best In Show, and A Mighty Wind.
Christopher Guest (aka Nigel Tufnel) picked up where Rob Reiner left off and made a string of films that sort of follow the This Is Spinal Tap blueprint where an assortment of strange/unique people are the subject of a documentary and get from point A to point B though a lot of fantastic improv in every scene.
