Escape from Alcatraz (1979) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Patrick McGoohan (The Warden) became famous in the 1960's for playing secret agent John Drake in the series Danger Man. He followed that show with a highly regarded science-fiction/spy fiction/psychological thriller hybrid that he created called The Prisoner. A sort of 60's ancestor to modern day prestige limited series. It's a very trippy show. He was a supporting player for most of his career. He was in David Cronenberg's (The Fly) breakthrough film in the USA called Scanners. By far his most famous latter years role was as the villainous King Edward I in Mel Gibson's Braveheart.

ED209

The Outlaw Josey Wales and Pale Rider, two of the greatest westerns ever made.

So much more Clint to get to! -Sam

In the list of "Inmates" at the end of the credits : Danny Glover in his first feature film role. Almost impossible to see, because his face is partially blocked by bars. He's the first person Morris passes with his book cart after going through the "D Block" door.

Thomas Yanez

Hopes so, one of his classics would be cool... "Kickboxer", Lionheart" or "Nowhere to Run"

Joe Lazarus

Fun fact: the character who called himself "English" was based on the famous NYC Mob Boss from Harlem Elsworth "Bumpy" Johnson who was associated with the Iconic Italian mobster Charles "Lucky" Luciano. One of the inmates believed that Morris and the Anglin brothers had help from the outside, arranged by a convict on the inside. He claimed that it was Bumpy Johnson who had arranged for a boat to pick up the escapees. He even claimed that a few weeks after the break, he received a post card from the escapees. In it, they gave the pre-arranged code words that confirmed their escape. The card read, “Gone fishing.” I hope you add "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot" (1974) with Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges, great chemistry between the two actors playing criminals.

Joe Lazarus

Play Misty for Me ( 1971), High Plains Drifter (1973), The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976), Pale Rider (1985), and In the Line of Fire (1993) are my top five recommendations for Clint Eastwood.

James Miley

Bravo! Another Clint classic!!!

Chris Bruneau

Are we getting any Van Damme movies soon?

Demos Samolis

I dunno, I think they made it. Yay, criminals!

VivendoBem

Great Fred Ward picks, especially the criminally underrated "Miami Blues". It's a real gem.

I love the beguiled, Paul--great choice! Never saw the remake, but speaking of some of Clint's less remembered '70s titles, I happened to catch "The Gauntlet" a few months ago on TCM after not having seen it in years, and it was surprisingly great (despite Sandra Locke). Ol' Clint really cranked out some heaters and even when they weren't home runs, they were usually at least pretty solid doubles.

Another 70s Eastwood film I'd recommend is 'The Beguiled.' I saw it in high school in the middle of my big Eastwood binge (nearly every film he'd made up to that point played on TNT or TBS at least once a year, so trying to tape them all was a full time job). Needless to say, I missed a lot of what it was trying to do at that age, but I just rewatched it this past January and WHEW that's the horniest movie Eastwood ever made. Then I watched Sofia Coppola's 2017 remake with Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman and it was good too, but like all of her films there's some kind of invisible barrier between the action and the viewer which makes it more like a museum piece.

Paul Cox

Always liked this one. Very tense and realistic- doesn’t focus on a lot of unnecessary “action”. For another escape movie, also based on a true story, I suggest “Papillion” (1973) with Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman. For Clint Eastwood, I suggest “In the Line of Fire” and “The Mule” For Fred Ward, I suggest “The Right Stuff” and “Miami Blues”

Samolina Pilchard

That was excellent ,a very very enjoyable book review indeed 📘

Duncan

Excellent movie. It's really quite a story. It's definitely my favorite Clint Eastwood that is based on true events.

Scott Kerr

Great Reaction

There was a documentary show on the History Channel a few years ago about the escape. It is believed that the brothers made it to Brazil. There are rumors that one of the brothers has died from cancer.

This was the fifth and final film that Clint made with director Don Siegel with their most famous collaboration being the original Dirty Harry. He considered Siegel to be his main mentor when it came to his own directing career and he dedicated Unforgiven to him and Sergio Leone, who had both passed away by the time it was made.

Brad P

Another great Clint film from the 70s, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (you might have this on your list already). While it definitely has elements of an action/heist film, it's more offbeat than his other films of the era. Clint gives one of his more moving performances and his co-star is a very young Jeff Bridges who got his second Oscar nomination for his role.

Brad P

Props for recognizing Larry Hankin as Old Joe from Breaking Bad. He also played eccentric characters in Friends, Seinfeld and Planes, Trains and Automobiles among many other roles.

Bennett Holleman

The officers there have no care's in the world about the inmates, they only have to keep them alive as the bare minimum. And I believe the reason they stopped using Alcatrraz was because it was ancient and falling into disrepair

Terry Lee

All great films to react to. I remember "Play Misty For Me" really affected my friend and haunted him for quite a few years after.

Guston Zimasheen
