The poem that Verna recites to Madeline is a real Edgar Allan Poe poem called "The City in the Sea".

Also, now that we have gotten back to the original deal with Verna and the whole "into the world together/out together" thing, I can make a comment I wanted to make about Goldbug:
There was a key line from Verna to Tammy during Tammy's breakdown--some foreshadowing--when she is egging her on. Right near the very end she says, "Sweetie. You might not believe me, but this part has nothing to do with you." Because of Tammy's needy/ego, but also because what is happening to her and the family has nothing to do with her.

I really like watching your reactions to this series. Thank you!
A couple comments about this episode:
- Verna's statement "...a safe space for a difficult truth. Here's one, came to me when you adorable little things starting building cities," gives us some idea of how ancient she must be. And this was hinted at way back in The Black Cat when she said: "I have a soft-spot for the short-timers. I always have."
- The opening shot of this episode first of the cat-clock eyes going back and forth then the cut to the swing of the tail. Compared with the shots of Fredrick right at his end.
