Training Day (2001) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Training Day (2001) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

Malcolm X is his best performance, but also his first Oscar award for Glory! The First Equalizer movie is also very good. Also one of his very early movies called A Soldier's Story was amazing!

Lana Gorgeous

I don't think Alonzo took his crew's money. They were getting paid a small amount on top of what he took. When Jake and Alonzo are talking in the car afterwards, Alonzo tries to hand him some money which was probably from and extra brick that was split between his team. I'm also sure his team knew why he was taking the money and how much. Also if you didn't know, the woman who they served a fake warrant and took her money was Macey Gray.

John Mulbury

Unfortunately, it’s rare that Denzel plays a villain. American Gangster is another great one.

Nobody was making great Noir films in the nineties, but somehow Devil In A Blue Dress happened anyway and it was great and Denzel was great in it and I feel like it's only just now getting recognized for how good it actually was. Definitely worth consideration in the next Denzel poll. Maybe even the next Noir poll, but we all know Hitchcock movies win those lol 🤪 Agree with others here that Malcolm X is his finest role, and the finest of Spike Lee's films not named Do The Right Thing.

Paul Cox

Ricochet from 1991 is a very underrated Denzel film, it's balls to the walls crazy action. But I think Malcolm X is his best performance.

Wesley

I recommend two other great cop movies - End Of Watch and Pride And Glory, the latter being a highly underrated movie with a great cast.

Stephanie

If you like this, I highly recommend “Harsh Times” with Christian Bale. Directed by David Ayer, writer of “Training Day’.

I'm glad you liked this one, it's a favorite of mine. A similar movie, just in that it's a dark, intense movie about a cop, played by Kurt Russell, would be Dark Blue. Antoine Fuqua directing and Denzel's acting were genius in this, the way he kept gaslighting the audience so effectively, definitely one of his best performances. One weird thing I find though is the scene when the Hillside cholos are talking about being raped, it was effective for establishing them as really creepy, dangerous characters, it's just funny to me because I think the writing there was inspired by American ME, it really put that idea out there, problem is it is kind of, I don't know I guess I'd say an exaggeration, because the whole point of being in a gang in prison is so you DON'T get raped. I've never been to real jail but I know some people who have and it does happen of course, it's just weird that these characters were sort of bragging about being raped and that's inaccurate, even if it did happen, that's not something a gangster would even mention, let alone joke about. I'm reluctant to recommend American ME, it is a very well made movie, it's just those couple scenes are really disturbing. The controversy behind it is pretty crazy though, the Mexican Mafia was pissed about that movie, Danny Trejo had to talk them out of killing Edward James Olmos for making it because they considered some of his portrayal as a direct insult. I have a few retired cop coworkers and friends, LAPD and LA Sheriff's deputies, and they said End of Watch is the most realistic cop movie they've seen.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Not a villain role but the movie Fallen;is Denzel creepiest movie I’ve seen.Very original plot they came up with.

Brian Anthony

This is hands down Denzel’s best performance imo. He’s a great good guy but this movie proved he’s a terrifying bad guy. You guys should make time for Brooklyn’s finest. Same director. With ethan hawke, Richard gere, Don Cheadle. Another great cop drama.

Miguel Tapia

The screenplay does a great job at being "movie realistic" and doesn't need to worry about being actually realistic. It works so well because of how great every performance is. There are a lot of characters that are only in one scene, yet you get to know them SO well, so all of their actions make sense. I like how Hoyt's high as a kite when he pretty much states what this movie is about when he mentions "smiles and cries". Alonzo never once says or does a single good thing. When all you do is make people cry (not literally), nobody likes you. He's also the only guy in the whole movie who doesn't have a code at all. He'll use anyone at any time and that doesn't fly with most people no matter what side of the law they're on. In the 'smiles and cries' scene Alonzo acts like he gets it, but he really doesn't.

Brandon

"Uh, can I get some crack, please sir?" Daniel "Rookie" Schmitt That movie never gets old, I swear. Denzel brought his A-game in this one, and Ethan Hawke was phenomenal. Thank you both for finally reacting to this. What a "day", indeed. Haha.

EdmanXERO

An often forgotten but good Denzel movie is "Fallen". Also stars John Goodman and James Gandolfini.

Ed R

Yep, 10x better than Forrest Gump

Jeffrey Miller

Early Denzel movie "The Hurricane" is really good.

Athos Count de la Fère

I agree 💯. I think it's Tom Hanks best performance.

Athos Count de la Fère

I first saw "The Hurricane" with Denzel and I was instantly a fan. Training Day is a my favorite Denzel movie, with American Gangster my second favorite.

Athos Count de la Fère

American Gangster is another great Denzel movie.

Carlos Hurtado

You think Ethan is young in this you ought to see him in a movie called “Mystery Date” he looks like a baby in that lol

Richard

so glad you guys chose this one--definitely Denzel's all-time greatest performance!!!

Chris Bruneau

Great movie and reaction! Sam wanted to rewatch to catch more little parts where things are connected, now knowing how things turn out. There's a little catch, when after they murder the old friend/dirty cop, and Alonzo is in the car on the phone, waiting for Jake to get in, and you hear Alonzo say to whoever he's talking to on the phone to make sure that the tub is clean. Now you know what that is preparing for 😉 Also hearing Daniel ask to "Please can I buy some crack" is hilarious!! 😆🤣

Ed Garland

Antoine Fuqua, the director of this film, is great and he has a really interesting filmography. He has directed Denzel several times (including the Equalizer movies) and also one of my favorite Bruce Willis movies, Tears of The Sun, you guys should definitely check out more of his movies

Leevon Peterson

It's the great dilemma. Which movie to watch first?

Guston Zimasheen

You guys asked were there anymore "Villian" Denzel. There's a movie he did called American Gangster where he plays one. Take care

Darnell Sowell

Time to merge the Tom Hanks and Denzel filmography and react to Philadelphia.

Jeffrey Miller

I like him also in "Cry Freedom" !!! Second for Flight and He Got Game !!!

Florian Meier

For me The Best and Coolest Role of Denzel in his Entire Career !!! Well Deserved Oscar !!! I recommend "The Bone Collector" from 1999 with Angelina Jolie

Florian Meier

Alonzo remains one of the most evil villains in film in my opinion. Pure. Evil.

Jeffrey Miller

😂

TBR Schmitt

This to me, is similar to 'Scent of A Woman', in that the film itself, in terms of the plot, and the directing is not exactly a masterpiece, but the performances are just incredible, especially from the lead. Denzel is at his most charismatic and that is saying something, especially as a villain. You've now done his two Oscar wins with this and 'Glory'. Now missing is 'Malcolm X', that's his other immortal role. Some more Denzel where he may not be an outright villain, but a scumbag/non-sympathetic character: 'He Got Game', 'Flight', & 'Fences'. He's great in all of them. He also plays a criminal in 'American Gangster' but It's not one of my favorite Denzel performances.

Shehab Dawoud

One of Denzel's best and my favorite role of his

Smooticus

Oh this is going to be great!

Jeffrey Miller
