Glad you all enjoyed this one. Definitely watch the next one, Once Upon a Time in Mexico; it and Sin City are Rodriguez’s best films, in my opinion.

2024-05-04 05:12:01 +0000 UTCHm. I've seen this dozens of times and every time I realize I lose interest after that second bar shootout. Sometimes I struggle to even like this movie. It just runs out of steam and just becomes a collection of nice moments, but don't flow. Too many characters are introduced and have big scenes and are never seen again or just appear in the background. It kind of reminds me of the episodes of BOBA FETT that Robert Rodriguez directed--just fun incidences. Probably the one movie he directed that I liked all the way through was THE FACULTY. The dude's got talent, I think he just struggles with telling a fluid story. I think I remember, and it was on the DESPERADO DVD, where he said he understands how people watch movies now. They just skip to their favorite chapters.

2024-05-02 04:49:38 +0000 UTCDesperado was a lot of fun. However, when I think of Antonio Banderas I think of The Mask of Zorro (1998). Wouldn't be surprised if both of you have already seen it, but if not then it would be a great movie for you to react to at some point.

2024-04-30 17:20:42 +0000 UTCI remember I went and bought the soundtrack for this one, loved it, original music from Los Lobos and classic Link Wray, great stuff. Los Lobos also did the music for La Bamba, which I recommend. Robert Rodriguez makes some fun movies. I think you already know but Planet Terror and Death Proof were meant to played as a double feature as an homage to the B movie double features he and Tarantino watched back in the day.

2024-04-30 06:16:51 +0000 UTCRodriguez apparently filmed an ultraviolent final shootout between El Mariachi and Bucho's men but it was so graphic that the MPAA demanded he make a lot of cuts. Frustrated, he decided to just cut the whole sequence and, as far as I know, that footage has never been seen. Carlos Gallardo, who played the bandmate with the dual guitar machine guns, played El Mariachi in the original film. The brief flashback at the start was a reshot version of a moment from the climax of the first film with Banderas in place of Gallardo.

2024-04-30 00:19:30 +0000 UTCSaw this in the theater...my friends and I had just discovered John Woo movies (Hardboiled, The Killer), and we saw the preview for this and thought, 'Hey...is that the Spanish vampire from Interview with the Vampire shooting people with two guns like in a John Woo movie? Cool! And it was...and then there was Salma. None of us were prepared for Salma Hayek. Danny Trejo with throwing knives? Please. Vampire with two guns? Shit. Salma Hayek just being Salma Hayek...and we were done for. Can't wait to watch this with you (oh, and glad to hear your dog Cooper is doing better...was he touched by Salma Hayek? That would cure me...)
