Ronin (1998) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Ronin (1998) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

There was a period of roughly ten years where Jean Reno was THE Frenchman of Hollywood, especially genre films. From Mission: Impossible to Godzilla or The Da Vinci Code. He started his career in France in the 80's working with Luc Besson. His true breakout came for his scene stealing supporting turn in Besson 1988 film's "The Big Blue" which was the most successful French film of the 1980's. To me, Ronin is Reno's best Hollywood film, and a great showcase for him as the movie's second lead. FYI, Ronin's international trailer is a favourite of mine and the voice-over says Reno's name out loud at the end. It might be helpful with the pronunciation :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TqaVEIUw4U

I love that this movie has THREE Bond villains in it. Sean Bean from Goldeneye, Jonathan Pryce from Tomorrow Never Dies, and Michael Lonsdale from Moonraker.

The One Ring was in the briefcase. That's why Sean Bean leaves after the first third of the movie ;)

Great Reaction to a great movie

Really, Robert's two suggestions could be part of a poll. Original and remake. • 3:10 to Yuma (1957) and 3:10 to Yuma (2007) • Dawn of the Dead (1978) and Dawn of the Dead (2004) • The Day of the Jackal (1973) and The Jackal (1997) • The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2009) and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2011) • Insomnia (1997) and Insomnia (2002) • King Kong (1933) and King Kong (1976) and King Kong (2005) • The Manchurian Candidate (1962) and The Manchurian Candidate (2004) • Ringu (1998) and The Ring (2002) • A Star is Born (1937) and A Star is Born (1954) and A Star is Born (1976) and A Star is Born (2018) • The Thomas Crown Affair (1968) and The Thomas Crown Affair (1999) • War of the Worlds (1953) and War of the Worlds (2005) Also, some other good movies to check out where you've already watched either the remake (most common) or the original: • Scarface (1932) • The Thing From Another World (1951) • The Fly (1958) • Ocean's Eleven (1960) • Dune (1984) • Man on Fire (1987) • Psycho (1998) • Infernal Affairs (2002) -- the film that was remade into The Departed

Also, if you guys want more classic chases, you've got to see The French Connection and French Connection II with Gene Hackman. The first was directed by William Friedkin (The Exorcist), who passed away recently. The second was directed by the same guy who did Ronin, John Frankenheimer. The first one has an amazing car chase and the second has a subversion of that. Frankenheimer also directed the original, classic Manchurian Candidate from 1962. It's honestly probably worth watching both the original and the remake from 2004, by Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs). Further classic car chase movies include Bullitt, the second Mad Max movie The Road Warrior (I assume you've seen Mad Max: Fury Road), and (for something a little different), the comedy What's Up, Doc? (1972).

So cool! Thank you for sharing that! -Sam

Oh that’s so cool and clever! Lol Sean Bean definitely would have died if he stayed 😂 I like the Pulp Fiction connection! -Sam

I wish you could react to more John Frankenheimer movies - The Manchurian Candidate, The Train, Seven Days in May, Seconds, Black Sunday etc... much of his work is vastly underrated.

Holy crap, it's Boris from Chernobyl!

One of my favorite of Robert De Niro's roles, I always wanted to know more about this character. He's not quite as badass as Neil in Heat but so cool, and funny, charming even, and I thought probably a realistic spy, especially because he doesn't seem like one, deceptively unassuming. Jean Reno's Vincent is also so cool, would have loved a couple movies with these characters. This one is also a little nostalgic for me too, I actually saw this in a theater in Paris back in 98, there's even a bench they crash through in the car chase that I think I may have napped on lol. I was stationed in Germany at the time and spent a four day weekend in Paris by myself, sometimes I'd just hop on a train somewhere with just a backpack and just improvise from there, usually sleeping on trains because I didn't want to pay for a hotel. Good times.

Great reaction. Saw this in the theater, loved it, and have seen it a million times since. It's SUPER rewatchable. The director of this movie, John Frankenheimer, was a master of suspenseful action whose greatest work was the original “The Manchurian Candidate” (1962), which will likely never win a poll but is unbelievably taught and unsettling and just terrific. Also never, ever winning a poll but with it’s French setting and costarring Michael Lonsdale (who played Jean-Pierre, Vincent’s friend who tells De Niro the story of the 47 Ronin) is a movie that shares a bit of DNA with this one and is one of the great cat and mouse suspense thrillers ever made, “The Day of the Jackal” (1973). As I said, I can’t imagine it would ever make it to the channel, but this community would love it if they ever saw.

Re-watching this with the reaction was the first time I realized this was a Brazil reunion for Robert De Niro and Jonathan Pryce. Going to take this as a sign you guys will check out Brazil sometime this year (and preferably the Director's Cut, which you might have to find on The Criterion Channel, or their Blu-ray release). One of the most incredible, brutal satires of bureaucracy ever made and a visual masterpiece.

classic macguffin--just like the briefcase in Pulp fiction!!!

Chris Bruneau

I absolutely love this movie. The only issue I have is the "Teflon bullet" part when De Niro gets shot. Teflon bullets don't work like that at all. EDIT: Wow, I noticed a continuity error for the first time too, just because Samantha said "wasn't Gregor the only one with the seat belt on" after the car crash. During the chase Gregor is sitting in the front passenger seat the whole time, but after the car flips he crawls out of the rear drivers-side window. Maybe he was supposed to have crawled between the seats and into the back, but that seems weird.

A Classic, and very good film, that was truly ahead of it's time. An excellent storyline, cast, characters, soundtrack, and true action. As always De Niro nailed his role with the legendary Jean Reno, and these two are just in general beyond legends. With no CGI, the film alone, and the car chase sequence has to be the best in cinema, and one of the factors that made this movie a masterpiece, and ahead of it's time. A truly completely underrated film, and one that deserves more respect. Here are more De Niro films I hope you add to the list... "Once Upon a Time in America" 1981 Robert De Niro, James Woods "Awakenings" 1990 Robert De Niro and Robin Williams "Analyze This" 1999 Robert De Niro Billy Crystal "Meet the Parents" 2000 Robert De Niro Ben Stiller "Sleepers" 1996 Robert De Niro Kevin Bacon, Brad Pitt "Mean Streets" 1974 Robert De Niro, Harvey Keital, Martin Scorsese

This was a 'Nice' reaction. Thanks guys:)

Great action flick. Great cast. I've watched it, I don't know, dozens of times probably. Happy to watch you guys get to watch it now.

Jay Davis

What is in the silver case? The very same item that was in marselis wallace's briefcase in pulp fiction. Its called a macguffin, a motivational plot device. The actual contents are irrelevant, so long as everyone in the film agrees that it is valuable or desirable.

Mark Ultimatemusings

Really good heist movie...The Lookout (2007, Mirimax), with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Jeff Daniels.

Steve Mercier

For the driving scenes, they used cars with steering wheels on the right side (like in Britain). The stunt driver would be using the real steering wheel on the right side while they put a fake one one the left side so it looks like De Niro and Natascha McElhone are really driving. Congratulations to Sean Bean! He was in a movie where he didn't die! Nice! Someone joked that what was inside the case was the briefcase from Pulp Fiction.

Ellie Miller

The ending is a big part of why I love this film. It’s like an old-fashioned piece of film noir, less reliant on “characters” but more about “archetypes”. Everyone’s suspicious and sketchy and they’re all after the undefined macguffin. One of my favorites. 😂

oldcdog

Hiding the gun near the bathroom, is so that if they had searched him on his way in; he would look unarmed. Very good tradecraft.

Al Karnov

"You ever kill anyone?" "I hurt somebody's feelings once." Love this movie. Fucking-A.

Steve Mercier

Oh wow! I had no idea it was the same location -Sam

Mesmerizing to watch! Ice skating is so cool! -Sam

Unfortunately, we’ve both already seen Meet the Parents! -Sam

Along with being a well made movie, it will be remembered for the lack of CGI, being filmed where Princess Diana died, and on of the last heavy action films we ever see from De Niro.

Erwin Quiachon

"I ambushed you with a cup of coffee.", is my favorite.

Erwin Quiachon

Yes, best line of the film.

Chris Bruneau

So excited for this one!!! Sam said it won a poll, but it has also been on my monthly pick list for a while! I own the special edition DVD. the director, John Frankenheimer, said he told his actors/stunt doubles, "when you drive my cars, you drive FAST--NO brake lights!!!" there are no CGI effects, these are real cars moving thru the streets crazy fast. saw this in the theatre--THRILLING!

Chris Bruneau

The ice skater is Katerina Witt, 4-time World Champion and 2-time Olympic Champion. She absolutely ruled the ice skating world in her time.

David Martin

The Car Chase in "The French Connection" is a Classic ... Another Great One is in "Bullitt"

Florian Meier

Haven’t seen this one in a minute, so it’s a good opportunity to rewatch. You never forget the car chase. The only other film that has a car chase similar in quality is ‘The French Connection’. Hope your next De Niro movie is ‘The King of Comedy’. It’s long overdue.

Shehab Dawoud

awesome movie!

What's the Colour of the Boat House in Hereford? :) What a Classic De Niro ;) I recommend "Meet The Parents" from 2000 with de niro and Stiller and "The Crimson Rivers" from 2000 with Jean Reno
