Directorial Debut Film Poll!

Help pick the Directorial Debut we will react to!

Please feel free to suggest other options in the comments for future polls!

*NOTE: I have seen American Beauty & Donnie Darko, so this would only be Sam's first time watching! Sam has seen Citizen Kane, so this would only be my first time watching!

Comments

I do!

Catherine LW

Can't believe we're finally getting the long-awaited, many times so-close reactions to This Is Spinal Tap and Dog Day Afternoon. May is gonna be a great month!

Paul Cox

I gotta go with Donnie Darko. There are some really good choices though.

Joseph Axenroth

Thief is also one of my FAVS!!! I'm from Chicago, so its even better for me seeing the locations.

Chris Bruneau

As much as I love “Night of the Living Dead”, I’m pulling for “Spinal Tap” because the Schmitt’s laughing is infectious. Hopefully it can usher in a few of the other Christopher Guest mockumentaries like “Waiting for Guffman” and “Best in Show”.

Jeff B.

Thief (1981). One of my top 10 films of all time, and definitely my favourite heist film of all time. Even better, in my opinion, than Heat, which was ALSO written/directed by Mann. A reaction can't come soon enough!

Future Boy

Same for me, and well said. You know that quote in the movie as well as I do, but I won't spoil anything.

EdmanXERO

Body Heat - Lawrence Kasdan

Birdie Num Num

Michael Mann - Thief. Inarrritu - Amores Perros.

Birdie Num Num

Soderbergh - Sex, Lies, and Videotape. Mel Brooks - The Producers.

Birdie Num Num

Unfortunately a remake was just announced a few days ago.

Birdie Num Num

The 400 Blows - Truffaut. Probably the most acclaimed debut after Citizen Kane.

Birdie Num Num

Ooh LOVED True Romance! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Ooh this one is on our list! I didn't realize it was a directorial debut, that's awesome -Sam

TBR Schmitt

We haven't! Sofia would have been a good add to this! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

BADLANDS is great, but I don't think it's something that wins polls. But it's funny, because TRUE ROMANCE seems to borrow way too much from this movie.

Philip Davetas

Spinal Tap is in the lead!

iliketostayhome

Terms of Endearment - James L. Brooks' debut

Birdie Num Num

have you seen The Virgin Suicides? Sofia Coppola's directorial debut.

Claudia

Same

mikethemotormouth

NO WE'RE NOT GOING TO FUCKIN DO STONEHENGE

mikethemotormouth

Sorry, Michael! I’ve seen some people have more luck online than on the app, but not sure if that’ll help for you! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

You can vote for multiple choices 😊 -Sam

TBR Schmitt

We had our latest foreign film poll last month 😊 -Sam

TBR Schmitt

how about non american films poll

g

Too many to choose from. Maybe narrow the list to five or so. I’m going with Boyz in The Hood. It such an impact when released.

Kyle Hopkins

Brilliant suggestion. There are so many Mitchum films I want them to see.

Paul Cox

The Night of the Hunter (1955) Charles Laughton's one and only movie

christopher brown

"This pretentious ponderous collection of religious rock psalms is enough to prompt the question, 'What day did the Lord create Spinal Tap, and couldn't he have rested on that day too?'"

William

Play Stonhenge!!!

William

Night of the Living Dead is another all time great example of how to make a first film. It was made for only about $150,000 and gets credit for triggering a billion dollar film genre. Both Ridley Scott and George Romero spent several years after college directing commercials before making their first full feature films. All that time working with film crews on commercials paid off when it was time for them to make their first feature films.

Erwin Quiachon

Badlands stands on it's own, but is also famous for inspiring Bruce Springsteen's "Nebraska" album. Springsteen has said that he was inspired to start writing that album after randomly watching that movie on TV.

Erwin Quiachon

Ridley Scott's debut, "The Duellists" (1977) was made for about $900,000, but looks it cost at least 10 0r 15 million dollars. It's got a a classic story, legendary cinematography, and top notch acting. Definitely a film school movie for how to make a quality first movie for a very low budget.

Erwin Quiachon

A lot of great films. But my pick is definitely gonna be Boyz In The Hood. Just watching that as a black kid/man just hits different for me every time I watch it. But it’s really great look into the hood aspect of America which very few people know about it still. So everybody should watch it

Jihad Lee

It's another Patreon glitch (what else is new?). It looks like you haven't voted when you open the actual post, but you can see the current totals including your own vote in the main/recent feed.

Paul Cox

Why is my vote not sticking? I voted, then I came back to the poll and it indicated that I had not voted. (I'm voting for This Is Spinal Tap.)

Michael Buhl

Lots of great films on this one. Too many for one poll. Half of them are favorites!

Mike Tocci

Ouf. I picked like half of the poll lol

PIG

Not many people know about Brick, which is a shame. And Rian Johnson's follow-up: The Brothers Bloom, is a film which even fewer have seen. He got so much flak for The Last Jedi, yet little attention for these delightful hidden gems.

Brandon Royce

Eraserhead is a film about the joys of being a new parent, so I have to vote for that For future debut polls: The Duellists (Ridley Scott) Bound (The Wachowskis) Mary & Max (Adam Elliot)

M

....and cool to see Badlands up there. Before there was Wild At Heart or True Romance or Natural Born Killers, there was Badlands!

Toc

Love Eraserhead; makes good reaction video!

Toc

😭😭😭

Lee Brennan

I used to spend summer break at my grandparents on the rez. they only watched the news or Turner Classic Movies. Hitchcock, Audrey Hepburn, and Citizen Kane, are the only things that stuck with me. There's a reason Citizen Kane is used as an honorary descriptor.

Slayback

Boyz n the Hood is the one I'm most interested to see you watch. But there's a lot of great stuff on this list. I'd love to see you do Duel at some point!

Future Boy

Hey, if it's a tie, or super close, and "Spinal Tap" is one of them? That movie is less than an hour and a half. I think it's like 80 minutes. So you might be able to squeeze two slam dunk reactions out of this poll, if you were so inclined. Boyz In The Hood is a great drama, Spinal Tap a great comedy......it might just be the new Barbenheimer!

Toc

Damn good poll! And what's cool is every movie is getting votes! Obviously I have my preferences, and there are two I haven't seen..... but whatever wins will be fine by me. Most of those movies would win other polls all by themselves!

Toc

Not only an awesome directorial breakout film, but an awesome zombie outbreak film.

Guston Zimasheen

New Fear Unlocked. jk

Guston Zimasheen

+1 American Beauty

metadata

I hope Boyz n the Hood can hang on.

Tim Raths

'Dawn of the Dead (1978)' is one of my all time favourite movies ,so in order to get to that ,we have to start here ,I so voted ✅

Duncan

Man I really want to see you guys react to Spinal Tap finally so we can move into the Christopher Guest movies (Waiting For Guffman, Best In Show, et al), but I think the time for a Citizen Kane reaction is overdue!

Paul Cox

"Boyz N the Hood" is a movie I grew up on. It'll be very interesting if it wins the poll.

EdmanXERO

Night of the Living Dead. The first breakout Zombie movie.

Athos Count de la Fère

Had to vote for some underdogs here. Definitely had to cast one for Eraserhead, just for the "Dafuq?" reaction I know we'll get from Sam and Daniel

Smooticus

"RICKY"!!!!!!!!!!!!

Duncan

I love this Poll. A lot of great first time efforts out there.

kbobravo

Gone baby gone is a phenomenal movie

Dan

Boyz N the Hood, break out the tissue box

Sylvan Green

Who wouldn’t want them to be perplexed by Citizen Kane? What, only me? LOL

Mike LL

These are all pretty damn good
