Schmitthead Monthly Movie Drawing - WINNER - February 2024

Comments

Agree with you whole heartedly on that one. Has that movie even made a poll? I kind of feel the same about Hostiles

Smooticus

it's one movie, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007). i love that movie and there aren't many reactors I would want to watch that movie with. I think you have to have a certain level of maturity to enjoy a movie like that, and the Schmitts have that. most reactors don't.

YoureMrLebowski

Daniel and Sam, Billy Bob Thornton has a pretty good show called Goliath. Watch it

Mr. Chumpus

ARMAGEDDON!!! You guys reacted to it, already! Billy Bob Thornton was so awesome in it!

fire12wife

I think we all have our favorite movies that we'd enjoy Daniel and Sam's reaction to, but for me, I like to suggest movies that are not "mainstream". I like quirky comedies just to laugh a little. Back to school, Friday, Tenacious D-Pick of destiny etc.....

Mr. Chumpus

I can relate. I have my treasure of absolute trash films that i adore - mostly crap made by Canon Film s in the 80's and 90's

Smooticus

Addendum: I get really real with myself about the question "is this a good movie or do I only think it's good because I watched it a lot when I was a kid/teen/college student?" Because a lot of movies that seem personally important are certifiably trash irl.

Paul Cox

Up top, I recommend movies I personally think are great. After that, I consider which good movies are fertile ground for an equally good reaction (I've certainly seen great reactions to movies I don't really care about or even like, so it's kind of a case-by-case basis). And after all that, I consider movies that won't actively destroy the reactors' algorithm by getting like three views (this part rules out some GREAT films because no matter how great they are no one's searching for reactions to them).

Paul Cox

I haven't watched this video, but as a longtime VUDU user, I assume this is suggesting using Disc-to-Digital to buy it, which I can confirm will probably work.

Tyler Foster

Cocoon is just laziness on Disney's part. There shouldn't be any rights issues with that movie, which was a 20th Century Fox production. I would guess that Sling Blade is going to be available again sometime soon. The rights to the Miramax catalog have bounced around for awhile after Harvey Weinstein's scandal, from Paramount to Lionsgate and then back to Paramount, which outright purchased them on the second go-round instead of simply distributing. Now that they fully control most of the big Miramax titles (with the exception of Tarantino's movies, which Lionsgate purchased instead), I would think that they'll reprint the older Buena Vista BD of Sling Blade and make it available digitally again, but who knows.

Tyler Foster

I watch several reaction channels, and while I am mindful of not forming an unhealthy parasocial relationship with reactors or podcast hosts or whoever else, I personally find myself naturally treating Daniel and Sam the same way I'd treat someone who I watched movies with in real life: eventually you get an idea of what sort of things appeal to them, and so your mind goes in a certain direction when thinking of things to recommend. Since the starting point is my own taste, obviously there's a lot of Venn diagram overlap, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend the same movie to one reactor or reactor team as I would another, because their tastes can be and are often different. From there, it's also like, technically it sounds like you could win this contest any number of times, as long as it's not two months in a row, but obviously there are lots of entrants and not an especially good chance of winning even once, much less multiple times. So the other factor for me is then, "what is a movie that I not only think Daniel and Sam specifically would like, but also that would potentially not only not win a poll, but which is so indie or comparatively obscure that it might not even make it on a poll in the first place?" I love the Coen Brothers, for example, and I really want them to watch Miller's Crossing, The Hudsucker Proxy, and some others, but I also think they're pretty aware of the Coens and have even done whole polls based around the Coens, so that feels like it's more possible without my help.

Tyler Foster

Here's a question for the hive-mind: When recommending a movie for the drawing or a poll (or voting on a poll for that matter), what are you driving motivations for recommending that particular movie? For example, I like to suggest films based on my belief that the majority of this channel's viewers are in the ballpark age of Sam and Daniel - say plus or minus 10 years or so - and aside from major franchise properties like Star Wars or the Indiana Jones movies for example, once you go before 1990 (or even 2000), there seems to be a major drop-off in what's been seen - at least that's what I get by studying what trends in the polls - so I like to recommend a lot of older movies that I think the general site community would enjoy. So back to my question: why do you suggest or vote for the movies that you do? I'm super curious and look forward to any/everyone's answers

Smooticus

yeah, this is a weird one. Apparently there's some kind of legal issues with the production rights that go back before streaming was a thing. It's also hard to find it on DVD/BluRay

Smooticus

I think I'll try for Paris, Texas as my choice again

Smooticus

Um, I haven't tried this personally, but according to people in one of the Sling Blade threads on Reddit, there's a way to manipulate VUDU into selling it to you for a couple bucks. Even if the steps won't work anymore (the video is about a year old), the guy narrating it is pretty funny. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48DXGCo3G8E

Paul Cox

Damn, no streaming of Sling Blade? Thats sinful

ron clint

No need to apologize! We have done the same thing on a poll before! We reached out to some friends outside the country to see if it’s available to stream outside the US, in which case we can do a VPN, but if not we’ll move forward with your second choice! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Hey, Dan and Sam! I should have done a little homework about availability. Looks like it isn’t carried on any streaming service. Sorry for the inconvenience. I’m fine with however you want to handle it, whether a second drawing, or giving me a second choice. Makes no difference to me. But if given a second choice, I’ll go with ‘A Simple Plan’ (1999), also a great Billy Bob Thornton role, and it IS available from Prime. Again, sorry for the slip up, and I’ll check before posting in the future.

David Wilkins

I can't wait for Sling Blade. Fantastic pick David Wilkins!!

Mark M

you guys will love Slingblade, I loved it the first time I watched it

orphanof CROM

Friday Night Lights would be a great movie for you guys to watch. And honestly, a great TV show if you wanted to do another long form program (76 episodes). It is one of the most acclaimed series of the 21st century. Even a weaker episode of the TV showis better than what most shows could hope for.

Dan McComb

‼️ A good note to add to the thread in future months would be that nominators should first verify that the film is widely and readily (commercially) available before nominating it.

Paul Cox

Hmm, I wonder if it has fallen into the same rights interzone that has kept Cocoon out of the digital realm. It's oop on DVD and Blu Ray too, I see.

Paul Cox

Uh oh 😳

TBR Schmitt

Congrats David, I haven't seen Sling Blade since it came out, but I remember really liking it. Sadly, it isn't streaming anywhere and isn't available to rent or buy in digital format.

Jen Barnes

Thank you!

Charles Mitchell

(the relationship dates back to when they had a short-lived sitcom together called Hearts Afire.)

Paul Cox

John Ritter and Billy Bob worked together in both Sling Blade and Bad Santa.

Paul Cox

Thanks, David! 👍

Mr. Writhms

and wasn't Billy Bob in Tombstone movie as the card dealer kicked out of the saloon by Kurt Russell?? and one of the actors in Sling Blade in the TV series Three's Company? Maybe?

Charles Mitchell

Congratulations!! Great pick and I am looking forward to seeing the reactions. !!

Charles Mitchell

Congrats, David! I haven't seen Sling Blade but I heard the impressions plenty of times. Haha. I'll try again next month!

EdmanXERO

Congrats David ,great pick ,looking forward to this masterclass in acting from Billy Bob

Duncan

Ugh... Sling Blade? Dang.

Sutil

As someone always hoping for more Coens, Billy Bob Thornton is in a couple of their movies, including one where he's the protagonist (and the Coens also produced Bad Santa). He also co-starred in a movie that was often mentioned alongside Fargo, A Simple Plan (1998), which was directed by Sam Raimi (who, as I've previously mentioned, has a long-standing relationship with the Coens, with Sam assisting on their fake trailer for Blood Simple, and later serving as co-writer on their Hudsucker Proxy, and Joel being an editor on The Evil Dead). Also, you've seen Thornton in a third movie that's on the channel, Armageddon.

Tyler Foster

What a great movie. Can’t wait!

Chet Overholt

YES, this is a spectacular choice! I hope you two are able to find some way to watch it, I don't believe Sling Blade is currently available on any streaming service. (And if I'm wrong, someone please correct me so I can watch too!) Btw, you guys also saw Billy Bob Thornton as the NASA employee in Armageddon.

Hunter DeRensis

Sling Blade is a good movie! Looking forward to it!

Mike the Ginger

Great pick, great movie! And oh, if Sam thinks the Billy Bob roles she's seen are so different... wow, just wait. Thank you, David!

Mark Kelso

Sling blade is pretty good. Billy Bob Thornton did his voice from this movie in the bloopers for the movie Armageddon, if y’all have seen that lol definitely watch the bloopers if you wanna laugh 😂

Gilbert Gonzalez

Congrats David

Nicotti

You saw Billy Bob in Tombstone—he got slapped repeatedly by Wyatt. 😁

Warren H

I'm so happy Sling Blade won actually! Watching him in this movie is so different than ANYTHING you've seen Billy Bob in...hard to even recognize him. Also of course wrote and directed it as well...but he disappears into this character. He of course crushes it in Fargo, but he still considers this the best thing he has ever done.

JVTrickypants

Congratulations David. Great pick! It really doesn't matter what I pick, I know we'll always be covered, as far as awesome films to watch by everyone.

Guston Zimasheen

You're going to have to have a wheel spin to figure out what to call this wheel spin!!! lol

JVTrickypants

If you like history and want to see more Billy Bob Thornton "The Alamo" is great from 2004 you won't be disappointed, maybe it can go on a future history/war poll 😊🙏

dieselbeast

Congratulations David, great movie choice!

Mark Ultimatemusings

LOL you were right there, Jason!! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh my god David was right below me on the Excel sheet!!! Soooo close
