WarGames (1983) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

Ladyhawke is an excellent sleeper movie.

Jason Mangen

He purposely got himself in trouble just to get the password.

Jason Mangen

Yes I had highschool teachers like the one in the movie but most of them were great.

Jason Mangen

Those are what I remember. I had the Commodore 64 myself too. So many fun games on it. My games systems went from Atari, Commodore, OG NES, then Playstation 2, then a WI with my then wife. I have not gotten a system since then. Just not interested enough nor have the money

Matt O'Keefe

Oh yeah, that's right! Gonna rewatch that one, so good. But yeah, Thirteen Days is great, kind of scary the way Chernobyl was, just the idea that such a thing could happen, but it leaves you with less existential dread than the Chernobyl miniseries lol

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

And the guy he almost shot was John Spence, from the iconic West Wing.

Linda Thackeray

The AppleIIe had floppies that big? I started off with a Commodore 64 and it had 3 1/4" floppies I believe. I loved floppies I used to always make the magenetic medium spin within the plastic. The smaller harder floppy discs weren't as fun. I used to also pretend they were ninja stars and throw them around the room lol.

Alex

Hahaha inspiring high schoolers everywhere to hack the government! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

That sounds like a horror film in the making haha -Sam

TBR Schmitt

This is a fun fact! So cool! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh no way! -Sam

Hahaha I love this comment, thank you for sharing Alex! Crazy how much things have progressed but still kind of remain the same, but sorry to hear about the job hunt :( -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Crimson Tide is up on the channel, but I don't think we've seen 13 Days! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

We haven't seen either of those film I don't think! I'll double check with Daniel! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Watched this last night after several years. I'm always surprised how well this movie has actually held up for its age

Smooticus

What's even more hilarious about this, was the fact that it scared the beejesus out of then president Ronald Reagon and played a part in the tightening of their computer defence sysstems .

Linda Thackeray

This movie is basically a prequel to THE TERMINATOR

Jason Dolan

This was a great fun 80s movie and I saw this at the cinema. If you want a more serious version of machine learning and control from the 70s, I think, then watch Colossus: The Forbin Project. I managed to get a Blu-ray of this recently. It’s a super computer built by the US that’s a little more Intelligent than its creators think possible.

Michael Seaney

Fun Facts: Stephen Falken (Falcon) was based on Stephen (Hawk)ing. Also, the writers originally wanted him to be played by John Lennon (whose death obviously precluded that).

Dan McComb

Fun Fact I was born at Loring Air Force Base so I doubly loved this movie as a kid. My dad was in B-52s at that time, essentially James Earl Jones’ job in Dr Strangelove.

Jason Dolan

Oh so cool!! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Thank you for the recommendation! -Sam

Our wedding hashtag was Holy Schmitt We’re Married 😂 -Sam

Raises hand...

SimianSupreme

You should call it the “Holy Schmitt” contest

Justin

Great Reaction. LadyHawke is another great Matthew Broderick movie of this era. I liked hearing your perspective as you internalized the computer concepts that you saw, probably never seeing the 80's BBS dial up craze to play games (bulletin board systems).

Brian's Dog

Finally a movie I can stream!! :)

Mark M

The great James Tolkan! He is now 92 years old. His last acting role so far was the amazing Bone Tomahawk in 2015

Matt O'Keefe

Yeah, those are the floppy disks I grew up with. The first computer I ever used was an Apple IIe(i think) in first grade(1982-83). There was a picture of me using it that year in the local newspaper because I think we were the first local grade school to have them.

Matt O'Keefe

There's also a PC game called "DEFCON" that's basically an actual video game version of the WOPR.

Jeffrey Miller

So the next logical step is to watch 1995's Hackers with Angelina Jolie. My absolute greatest guilty pleasure.

Mike Adams

BTW, you were right about it being Michael Madsen (from the "Kill Bill" movies among others) at the beginning. A very young one.

Thomas Yanez

It's funny that you talked about the overreaction and "he must be a soviet spy" in conjunction with talking about how almost no one knows anything about computers. At this point, I can do anything with any computer language, even if I've never seen it before because I've been doing everything with computers since I was 9, and I learned it all myself from the manuals.. but most people only learn enough to get by and they learn in college and my experience they just really are no where near at the capability of people like Matthew Broderick is playing in this movie. Even with what I just said, I won't even get a job interview if I don't have 5 years experience with some new framework or language that's like literally easier to learn than everything else I already know. It's crazy. It's part of why I'm going into business for myself. This is one of the few movies where the hacking is very real and doable, but not today. Only back then. The thing he did with the pay phone is real, used to do it all the time, and there was a lot you could do by playing recorded tones. In the 80s and 90s security was almost nonexistent, people would have voice mail boxes on systems without passwords. We used to take them and change the passcodes and use them as methods for people to leave us messages. The programs that dialed phone numbers like he was calling all the numbers in Sunnyvale was called a wardialer. You could either call in sequence starting at 0001 or call randomly. I don't even wanna tell you what I did with the Novell system in a classroom at my college. Let's just say people were freaking out thinking a ghost took over the computers. lol It was just like in this movie. The graphical interface had passwords and security but the terminal had no passwords and you could login as any computer or printer you wanted. This was always one of my favorite movies because it was like "OMG it's a movie about me and Sam"

Alex

"What kind of asshole grows up in Seattle and doesn't even know how to swim?" I could feel insulted by that line in the movie, but in fairness I was only born in Seattle. I didn't grow up there.

Kyle

Just one more comment, how funny is it that the same actor, the bald guy, was after Matthew Broderick for being a hacker, Michael J. Fox for being a slacker, and Maverick for being a MiG insulter but later splasher?

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Not just a fun movie but so damn important. With all our differences and war, nuclear war will end all humanity and nearly all life. It’s not even talked about unless a movie like War Games or Oppenheimer pushes it back to the public. “Ooookay PIG, we know, we know” lol

PIG

And I love that "yeah but it's 80s PG", PG just hit different back then lol Crimson Tide and 13 Days are also two other great but kind of terrifying movies about nuclear war. Crimson Tide is kind of based on a true event and 13 Days is based on a totally true event.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Aw I can't help it, I'm staying up late and going to work tired lol, War Games is just such a nostalgic classic for me I have to watch this reaction tonight 😆 And Project X is another Matthew Broderick classic, not the frat boy drunk fest one, because it's one of those situations where two movies have the same name, it's the kind of obscure 80s one where he's in the Air Force. Cable Guy is also a good one, and directed by Ben Stiller.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Daniel hopefully you feel better Soon, but Cool Voice;) ... Always liked this Film, so i really looking forward to your reaction ... Another Great Film with Matthew Broderick is "The Freshman" from 1990 with Marlon Brando and "Cable Guy" from 1996 with Jim Carrey

Florian Meier

Sweet, something fun after work being I'm temporary on 2nd shift again.

Jeffrey Miller

Ahh, yeah... Been excited for this one... Daniel will be channeling his gamer persona for this one...
