I think this is a good theory about the episode count! -Sam

I watched the episode before you had posted the full episode viewing, but as soon as I saw the mission map and the briefing mentioned Schweinfurt and Regensburg, I knew this was going to be rough episode. Sadly, the Schweinfurt raid - even though they did extensive damage to the ball bearing plant - had almost zero impact on German production since they had tens of thousands of bearings in warehouses across Germany. There would be a 2nd attempt at the plant when it came back on line in October 43 with the same results; a lot of lost planes with not much overall impact. Things pretty much remain until Jimmy Doolittle is given command of 8th AF in January 44 and begins making major changes in the tactics used. I'm very curious if we stay with the bombers for Big Week, or if this is when we start seeing the fighter pilots perspective

There's so much ambiguity about the reaction. I am excited that you're watching but also hate when it mess you up like that. I guess that makes is great in a way. If you're into reading, here's a report from the mission which includes newspaper articles, pictures from the people who lived through it. The detail captured in the show is amazing. https://100thbg.com/mission/?mission_id=22

That was so harrowing! Watching the gunner trapped while the plane was going down was gut wrenching 😰. Each occupied country like France, Netherlands or Belgium had resistance fighters who assisted downed airmen. There was an “underground railroad” to neutral Spain, where they would attempt to reach the British Embassy there, and eventually find their way back to England. I’ve read a few books about the very thing Samantha was talking about and it’s fascinating and suspenseful. Actress Audrey Hepburn was a teen in the Netherlands during WWII and had done some secret work with the Resistance, bringing notes to downed Allied airmen hiding from the Germans. At one point her family hid a downed British pilot in their basement for a month. There are so many stories about the war - a lifetime isn’t enough to know a fraction of them. I can’t help but wonder if episode 9 is going to be the kick in the gut like it was for Band of Brothers and The Pacific? I’m invested in this and look forward to more.

Loving the show so far. I think your screener does not have some text showing where they are and time to target. The guy who bailed out and found friendlies was in Belgium. Only one small edit from the screener to the aired version this time.

That sounds interesting! We’ll have to make some time to check it out, even if not on the channel, thank you! -Sam

I'm digging this series so far, but it's really hard NOT to think of Catch-22 when I watch something about an American WW2 bomber squadron. It's an excellent (and hilarious) classic novel. It was made into a movie in the 70's as well as a Hulu miniseries in 2019 that I wish more people saw. I mean, there's a character whose first, last and middle name are Major. His rank is also Major, so he's actually named Major Major Major Major. Naturally it has a bigger emphasis on humour, but it's also a pretty tragic story as well.
