Coming to America (1988) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Coming to America (1988) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

This is one of my better movie memories. My brother was visiting from California when I was living in Arizona, and we spontaneously went to see this movie in the theater. We both had such a good time, and I think about it every time I watch this one.

It sucks when people can't keep their big mouths shut and ruin the surprise.

Mr. Chumpus

Has Dan revealed to Sam he is the King of Antarctica πŸ‘‘ πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ά yet?

Jason Dolan

You two haven't seen Beverly Hills Cop yet?!? Put 'er on the list!

Nicotti

As a definite nerd, I love the allusion to James Earl Jones' role of Darth Vader in his line about dealing with Akeem himself and that it's a team-up movie of Eddie Murphy - the original choice for Winston Zeddemore in Ghostbusters (which obviously would have been a bigger role if he accepted) and Arsenio Hall - the voice of Winston in the first 3 seasons of the 80s cartoon, Real Ghostbusters. Latter is just a piece of trivia I find amusing watching the movie.

One thing I learned is that Sam Jackson and restaurants don’t mix lol but great reaction. Love that you guys are getting into more Eddie Murphy movies. Definitely check out Beverly Hills Cop. And a few more I’d recommend are Life and Boomerang.

Richard

Agreed, they should do Boomerang which never gets reacted to and absolutely hilarious.

SmooothE

such a classic i watched the VHS after school and homework every day back in 88. Some of this comedy is way over their head obviously not being black and in that time period. Their blank stairs was interesting but know they had to be there. The "Helped Gilligan get off the Island" line by the reverend alwasy cracks me up to this day.

SmooothE

You guys rock. This is such a great classic. I enjoyed rewatching for the 100th time with you guys lol. More Eddie Murphy the Beverly Hills Cops are really good as well. But my absolute favorite is another romantic comedy starring Eddie is Boomerang. I think you guys would enjoy that one as well.

Mike Bridges

I think Eddie Murphy was only in his mid-twenties when this was made, so not too far off from 21

Kevin Charley

Daniel: β€œOh, Samuel L. Jackson!” β€œOH SAMUEL L. JACKSON WHAT ARE YOU DOING??!!” 🀣🀣🀣 Daniel, u have the best reactions bruh! LOL

Tristan Durant

I am about to watch this. I guess you now know why you had to watch it soon after Trading Places. I'm so pissed it was spoiled. That was such a good cameo the first time I saw it. BTW you guys look great, I think your baby is pretty good because you don't look exhausted at all. The makeup is good because it's done by the legendary Rik Baker who worked on American Werewolf of London among others. Also, See you next wednesday is a a wink that John Landis insert in all his movies (Even in Thriller by Michael Jackson).

I think I mentioned it on Trading Places, but I want to mention it again because they're so good: don't miss two great Murphy movies about making movies in your journey through his filmography, which are Bowfinger (1999) with Steve Martin and directed by Frank Oz, and Dolemite is My Name (2019), which is a true story about filmmaker Rudy Ray Moore. It would also be worth checking out Dolemite (1975) beforehand, which in and of itself is a famous exploitation cult action/comedy film. The two movies offer two of his best performances.

In particular, Jackson has cited Lee's comparatively underseen Jungle Fever (1991) as a key movie in his recovery from drug abuse. He shot it two weeks out of rehab, concerned that he would no longer be able to act as well as he had while under the influence, but he poured his experiences of being an addict into the performance, and ultimately realized drugs were hurting his acting skills rather than helping. The Cannes Film Festival in France does not traditionally recognize supporting actors, but they were so impressed by his performance that they created an award for his performance in the movie, and Jackson stayed clean from then on.

Tyler Foster

Yeah...I believe Frank Poole's father says it to him on the little video chat thing.

Steve Mercier

"See you next Wednesday" is a line of dialogue from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Kevin Charley

"See You Next Wednesday" was the film playing in the porno theater at the end of "An American Werewolf in London" when David Naughton transformed for the last time; and there was a poster for it--I believe--in Jamie Lee Curtis' apartment in "Trading Places". It also pops up in The Kentucky Fried Movie, The Blues Brothers, Spies Like Us, Into the Night, Coming Soon, Innocent Blood, and I believe it's referenced in the The Thriller video, that John Landis directed for Michael Jackson. And there are probably others. (If I remember correctly, there's a marquee for it that's missing letters in the second Hellboy movie, by Guillermo del Toro.) I think John Landis just likes porno or something.

Steve Mercier

Thank you, Ian! Happy Holidays! -Sam

I love how Daniel was filled with joy the second Samuel L. Jackson came on screen. But as soon as he pulled out that shotgun, Daniel was like "SAMUEL WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!!" XD XD Excellent reaction. I hope you guys react to more Eddie Murphy soon!

EdmanXERO

Just let your Soul Glooooo ;) This Film was such a Big Hit in the 80's and one of the most succesful Films of 88 !!! A Classic !!! Eddie Murphy was the King of Comedy in the 80's !!! I recommend the whole "Beverly Hills Cop" Franchise (1-3) Love all of them !!! And of Course "48 Hours" from 1982... His Debut with Nick Nolte !!! Also i recommend "The Golden Child" from 1986 and "Boomerang" from 1992

Florian Meier

Samuel L. Jackson was still an unknown then, playing small bit parts. His first big role was in Spike Lee's "Do The Right Thing". Spike Lee was responsible for building his early career, putting him in 3 movies.

Mr. Writhms

I love this movie, but why is the best part the Soul Glo commercial?

Tostito Buddy
