FYI, Harmony asked a friend who works at Fox to smuggle the Johnny Gossamer movie out of the archive. She put a porn label on the tape to hide it.
This film was a box office flop but a critical darling. It was one of Downey Jr's first films after he truly stop doing drugs. It helped restore his credibility. Not so much the good performance part but the reliable on set worker part. A couple of years prior he did a movie called "The Singing Detective". It was produced by Mel Gibson and he had to pay Downey's insurance for the production out of his own pocket because no company would insure him.
This film is also probably the last truly great (and major) Val Kilmer role.
Michelle Monaghan was in a couple of Mission Impossible films, Ben Affleck's first directorial effort Gone, Baby, Gone and the first season of True Detective.

You've got me intrigued enough to watch Zero Effect. What's Up Doc is a brilliant attempt at a modern screwball comedy.

It's definitely more obscure than this, which has its reputation increase every year because of its Christmas connection and the fact that Robert Downey Jr. is in it, but another one I think you'd both love that I think is at least a tiny bit similar to this is the underrated gem Zero Effect (1998). It was the first film by director Jake Kasdan, who went onto direct some surprisingly big-budget comedies (the newer Jumanji movies). It stars Bill Pullman and Ben Stiller (right before he broke out with There's Something About Mary), and it is another excellent comedy-mystery where the mystery would be good enough to hold up a serious detective story, so the comedy is just an icing on the cake. You would definitely have to just pick this one at some point because I think it's too obscure to win a poll, but it's a brilliant and underrated film. Also, coincidentally, it co-stars actor Ryan O'Neal, who just passed away this week. O'Neal is also famous for the brilliant slapstick comedy What's Up, Doc? (1972), starring Barbra Streisand, and Paper Moon (1973), both of which were written by the late, great Peter Bogdanovich. You have not yet reacted to a Bogdanovich film, but you've seen him in his second career as an actor, playing Dr. Elliot Kupferberg, Dr. Melfi's therapist on "The Sopranos."
In more well-known territory, I'd say that description of a "comedy mystery where the mystery holds up" also applies to Fletch (1985), which in my opinion is Chevy Chase's best movie, and Beverly Hills Cop (1984), which I'm sure you heard plenty about after watching Trading Places.

This is such a fun movie on many levels. Glad you guys reacted. Shane Black did a similar, crackling dialogue and angular humor approach with Iron Man 3.

One of my all time favorites. Glad you seem to love Shane Black's style, commenting on how great The Nice Guys and The Long Kiss Goodnight (written by Shane Black) were. One of the also-underappreciated Shane Black written buddy comedy action films is The Last Boyscout from 1991. Not quite as good as KKBB or Nice Guys (IMO), but still a lot of wild fun.

This is maybe the most beautiful Michelle Monaghan has been in a movie. Also this is the origin story for Iron Man 3.
