Hurt lost the Oscar to Robert De Niro in Raging Bull I believe. Tough choice!

Great reaction! Thank you!
As some have already mentioned, this is the most normal (or perhaps I should say, "conventional") of Lynch's movies. The disturbing, dream-sequence montages are one of his signatures.
Also, since the movie is based on Treve's book, Merrick's first name is John instead of his actual name, Joseph. In his manuscript, Treves crossed out Joseph and wrote John without explanation.
Btw, wikipedia has a terrific write-up on the life and times of Joseph Merrick.
As you might surmise (I chose this movie after all), The Elephant Man made a lasting impression on me. I only saw it that one time until it hit commercial TV years later. And, it wasn't until it was on VHS 11 years later that I could even get a real copy of it.
My point is that I sat with this movie in my head for years before getting to see it again. And now, 24 years later, I still get something new from it and still feel the pivotal moments it.

Despite over 40 years in Hollywood, David Lynch has only directed 10 feature length films (the rest of his time has been in television, music, short films, etc). You and Daniel have already watched two of them, one of them is a Twin Peaks prequel you can't watch yet, and another is the original Dune (1984), which is often given the descriptor "unwatchable." So really, you could just make a poll featuring all other six of his movies! Blue Velvet (1986) will probably win, but personally I'd root for Eraserhead (1977), his debut film which is about new parenthood that he made right after the birth of his first daughter. Sound familiar? lol

John Hurt absolutely deserved the Oscar! I’ve only seen one other Lynch film, but this one was fantastic!

When I was a kid initially I was frightened by this movie. The more I watched it, I felt tremendous sadness and compassion for John.
I used to have a customer years ago whose face was deformed from a near-fatal accident and initially it was quite jarring. The more the got to see him, it was like I barely noticed it and once i got to know him, he was a really cool dude. And, he had a beautiful girlfriend, too.

Great movie and portrayal of the saintly Joseph Merrick. Thanks for the reaction video.

Definitely would avoid the PREQUEL Twin Peaks film until they've seen the series.

I adore this movie. One of my favourites. It's sadly overlooked on the reaction scene.
How John Hurt can portray everything he does, whilst effectively not able to use anything but posture, voice and eyes is masterclass of acting.
His lack of an Oscar is one of the Academy's all time oversights.
Lynch, who is normally very very "out there" and not to everyone's tastes, dials it back here just enough to keep a wonderful atmosphere but also ground the piece in a gritty Victorian reality. I think it's actually his best film (yes, it's his most mainstream, but is that a bad thing?).

Excellent film, really got me thinking about the utter depravity of the "freak show"--using peoples deformities for cheap entertainment.

I've been stoked for this one ever since it won the drawing! Honestly, David Lynch should get his own poll. His surrealism is always a trip. Weirdly enough, The Elephant Man is probably his most "normal" movie lol

Yeah, and when season 3 came out in 2017, it made everything contemporary seem really safe.

When you guys are ready to go full blast with Lynch, "Eraserhead" will be the craziest film you've ever seen (certainly on this channel)... and it will haunt your dreams (or if you want to watch his ONE other normal-ish film, there's "The Straight Story" which was actually rated G in 1999 and is ALSO based upon a true story)...
Gonna watch tonight... SO excited.

A Lynch film? Was not expecting this. Thank you!
Mel Brooks, known for his comedy, produced this film. He saw Eraserhead and knew he wanted Lynch to create it. What a bizarre team.
Yes. Would love you guys to watch Twin Peaks. It showed television what could be done, even before Sopranos.
