Sci-Fi Film Poll!

Help pick the Sci-Fi movie we will react to!

Please feel free to suggest other options in the comments for future polls!

*NOTE: I have seen Donnie Darko & Looper, so this would only be Sam's first time reaction.

We received a ton suggestions on the last polls, but we are trying to keep the poll sizes more reasonable. We have noted all suggestions for future polls!

Without Forbidden Planet, there would not have been Star Trek.

Neal Romanek

YES, and I’ve been saying that for a long time. It’s peculiar and unfortunate that there’s so much repetition among reactors. Everything is driven by numbers, not so different from the Top-40 radio of old, or so many other tired notions. The random pick feature has been a huge encouragement.

David Wilkins

no offense but i just cant stand the heaping pile of excrement that the new Dune is...that movie was boring af ....it played out more like video game cut scenes than an actual movie

Brian Sevilla

Forbidden Planet (1956)

christopher brown

I agree, I also think it's an 8 out of 10 movie

christopher brown

Thats the things with polls, its always the same movies that win across reactors but you need to go with majority of your audience. I like the random pick yous have started as it gives smaller films a chance

RE: my vote for Soldier: "Writer David Peoples (who co-wrote Blade Runner) wrote Soldier, which director Paul W.S. Anderson considers a "sidequel" to Blade Runner and it contains a handful of references to Blade Runner. However, beyond this, it has not been recognized as part of the Blade Runner franchise in any official capacity." 1998 was a banger year for turn of the century scifi (look it up). But as an aging Marine, Soldier holds a special place in my calcified chest cavity. Its cheesy AF but for me it hangs in the 8 or7 spot of the top ten of 98. again 98 was kind of a banger year for the genre at the time.

Slayback

To be frank, watching Dune (2021) right now seems a little pre-mature. Would have preferred for you to wait for Dune Part 2 to come out first (in 2024) so you can watch the whole saga at one go. As great as Dune 2021 is, it's just half of the story. Nevertheless, looking forward to your reaction!

Michael SCH

Cocoon is soooo good. Maybe a bit of nostalgia talking, but really think y'all would love it.

Ray Johnson

If you watch Cocoon I recommend the sequel too - I actually think it's even better and has one of my favourite scenes of all time.

Odd Thomas

I know this didn't fair well in a poll but 100% you should watch cocoon even if you watch it on your own. It's a Ron Howard film and it is amazing!

Lana Gorgeous

I'm so excited that Her got more than 50 votes so far. I know it won't win, but it gives me hope that one day you guys will see it. 😍

Domino

Sunshine won't win but it's one of the most underrated and amazing sci-fi movies

Odd Thomas

This is important. For both movies.

iliketostayhome

Super underrated. Definitely needs to win more polls.

Dan

11 votes seems like a margin that will get both Dune and Dark City watched. Fingers crossed anyway.

Tyler Foster

Dune is great, but I agree - hate it when other awesome films are obscured behind the big shiny object lol.

John Dracup

I suppose it's impossible to defeat the shiny new excitement currently around Dune. A shame: Dark City, Sunshine, and Gattaca are absolute must-sees. And you know how fascinating Donnie Darko is. Ah well.

Mark Kelso

Cocoon for me, loved that movie growing up lol

ElmSt Reactions

If you do dark city make sure it’s the directors cut.

djKENTO

I agree completely

David Anderson

Would like to suggest Innerspace (1987) (which was inspired by Fantastic Voyage) and ... er ... kinda coincides with another of your polls!

Michael SCH

Future Suggestions : 1953 Sci-Fi/War film (The War Of The Worlds), 1966 Sci-Fi/Adventure film (Fantastic Voyage), 1971 Sci-Fi/Thriller (The Andromeda Strain), 1972 Sci-Fi/Adventure (Silent Running), 1975 Sci-Fi/Sport (Rollerball), 1977 Thriller/Sci-Fi (Capricorn One). The British films, 1946 Fantasy/Romance (A Matter of Life and Death), 1967 Horror/Sci-Fi (Quatermass and the Pit).

Long-time Sci-Fi Enthusiast

Exactly

Athos Count de la Fère

I agree Outland is really good, basically High Noon in Space.

Long-time Sci-Fi Enthusiast

Sunshine got slept on by a lot of people. And to be honest, I get how the third act put a lot of people off. But I think it's worth experiencing for the sake of discussion.

Natck

Hopefully Cocoon will win one day. 🤞🏻🙏🏻 Such a beautiful and touching story. Classic Ron Howard and James Horner collaboration. Won two Oscars; Best Supporting Actor and Best Visual Effects.

James Willingham III

Voted for Dark City. I wish "Outland" 1981 with Sean Connery was on the poll. Love that atmospheric movie.

Athos Count de la Fère

@tyler: Mike Ryan at Uproxx tried to solve the mystery in 2020 with this article (https://uproxx.com/movies/cocoon-streaming-wilford-brimley-ron-howard/) and discovered that there's a music/score clearance issue.

Paul Cox

This was the movie that made me realise time travel movies are bullshit. I had just watched some documentary about the solar system, and it clicked that the Earth is always moving so why would you appear at the same place on it's face? If you time traveled a day into the past you would just die floating in space until the Earth arrived to burn you up in the atmosphere. You'd need a time travel space ship. Take off, time travel, land on Earth.

Tostito Buddy

I about dropped my phone when I was scrolling the choices and saw it. Instant vote. Love that movie.

Trepanation21

Spartan is so good. I would love to see Sam and Dan react to that one. "You don't want to go in the desert."

Tyler Foster

I tried to buy it on DVD and couldn’t find it anywhere

Jason Dolan

Also, I hope you consider watching the 1984 David Lynch Dune as well as the 2021 version.

Tyler Foster

@Paul: It's not actually in any kind of limbo as far as I know. It's just one of those films that happens to be unavailable online. It should still be fully owned by 20th Century Studios.

Tyler Foster

Voted for Dark City and Soldier. Happy Dark City is winning. Sad Soldier is limping over the finish line with a broken ankle. You guys should check it out some day, it's a bit like a SciFi version of Man on Fire. Soldier, Man on Fire, and Spartan are my "This guy is not fucking around" trilogy.

Tostito Buddy

Cocoon and Real Steel!

David Crabtree

Oh shoot!! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Gattaca is so underrated.

David Martin

TimeCop (1994)

Jonathan Patrick

Yeah, Cocoon has been in rights limbo for years and years. Of course it can be gotten through, ahem, "means," but whatever is keeping it from being in proper circulation might also prevent it from being reacted to on Youtube.

Paul Cox

If Dark City wins, I highly recommend watching the Director's Cut, which is available on Amazon Prime, among other sites. However, if Donnie Darko wins, you should definitely watch the *theatrical* cut.

Tyler Foster

If Dark City wins it has to be the director's cut.

ED209

Real steel is fantastic

Aaron Barlow

I’ve actually heard really good things about sunshine. I’ve never seen it myself.

Miguel Tapia

It's a pity Sunshine is never going to win one of these, but I'm gonna vote for it every time it's included. Visually it's a stunner.

Paul Cox

Good luck finding Cocoon online to watch 😢
