Mystic River (2003) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

Took me a long time to watch this but I finally did, and I have to disagree with one thing, which is I do not think Celeste (Marcia Gay Harden) was "feeding" Dave to Jimmy when she told him. I think she is just relieved to have someone to tell, to not have this secret to carry around anymore, to admit that she does in fact think he was involved in Katie's death. I get why she should've known that Jimmy would take matters into his own hands, but if she had known that Jimmy was going to kill Dave, why does she look so scared at the end of the movie, as it dawns on her that something might've happened to Dave?

Excellent reaction. This movie is definitely a masterclass in acting. I think the most upbeat Marcia Gay Harden performance I've seen is in 'Whip It', where she was a badass mom, but it's hard to forget her in 'The Mist'.

The river is dark and deep but also beautiful and peaceful.

This is such a powerful work of filmmaking art. For those who’ve spent a lot of time around broken people in bad circumstances, it resonates with a certain reality. As you mentioned, the acting and the cast is fantastic, from minor to major roles. The women were particularly powerful, if unsettling. Next month I’m going to cast a vote for another stellar work by Macia Gay Hardin. She co-stars with Ed Harris in a biopic about the painter Jackson Pollock, and it’s one of the great biopics, or movies about artists.

Sean Penn movies I recommend are At Close Range (1986), also with Christopher Walken as one of the most coldly evil characters ever; and The Falcon and The Snowman (1985).

Samolina Pilchard

Wholeheartedly agree on Ruthless People. Not sure what the connection is... (not that there needs to be a connection).

Samolina Pilchard

Yes, I’ve seen Legends of the Fall and feel the same about that movie as well.

I haven't seen Mystic River, but your comment made me think of the movie Legends Of The Fall. Your description here of Mystic River was pretty much how I felt after watching that movie.

I think the movie does an excellent job throughout in portraying just how diligent Kevin Bacon and Laurence Fishburne are at their job and Sean's gesture to Jimmy at the end was a clear sign that the gloves are off and that he was coming for him Dave's body is in the river ,Just Rays bones are in the river ,Jimmy also through the murder weapon/knife in the river You may not have seen it on screen ,but shortly after the movie ended ,it is going to take minimal effort for police divers to retrieve all the evidence and Jimmy's days were numbered

P.S. There’s a wonderful movie called RUTHLESS PEOPLE with Danny Devito and Bette Midler. Please do a reaction to it. You’ll be guffawing out of your seats. It is a classic comedy. Cheers!

I love this movie so glad you watched it, in my mind it is the "worst" ending of all. its a ending that just makes you upset and nothing happens, there is no happy ending, like life. amazing acting by Sean Penn, but honestly Laura Linney (Jimmy's wife) OMG! she scares me to this day! that scene at the end with her and jimmy before the parade just creeps me out. I fear her more than Jimmy or the savage brothers. I want so much for Kevin's character to do something, arrest them or go rouge and take out a evil person but ... nothing... and I think that makes it better.

While the acting is phenomenal, I feel this movie is just too depressing and pointless, and I understand that films can be depressing and also worthwhile at the same time, but this isn’t one of those times. Clint Eastwood’s directing is also top notch, so maybe it just boils down to the story itself. I haven’t seen this movie in twenty years, so I thought I’d try to watch again because it is so highly praised, but I still came away from it feeling the same way as I did the first time I seen it. Great commentary, though, and it sounds like you both feel the same sort of way that I do. But there is always benefits to watching a film that you don’t completely enjoy, and this one is definitely the great acting by the whole cast.

Dead Man Walking is probably my favorite Sean Penn performance

Jason Dolan

Speaking of the acting Sean Penn and Tim Robbins both won Oscars for their performances this year.

Jason Dolan

Sean Penn is a primal force in this movie--and spectacular--but I think Tim Robbins' much more controlled, but incredibly unhinged performance is the one that always stands out to me. The look in his eyes when he talks to his wife about vampires always puts a hook in me. In any case, this movie is one of Eastwood's best contemporary movies, and a real good whodunnit as well. Can't wait to watch it with you guys.

Second for Wild Things and The Game !!!

Florian Meier

I believe Sean Penn' s scene where he literally screams in grief is the most powerful acting I've EVER seen on film! Eastwood is a master and the whole cast is superb!

Chris Bruneau

You've probably already looked it up by now but this movie came with a lot of nominations and awards. Nominated for best picture, director supporting actress (Harden), and adapted screenplay, while Penn and Robbins won best actor and supporting actor. Personally think this is Eastwood's best as I'm not into Westerns. Escape From Alcatraz is another great one, based on a true story! I feel like this one often gets overlooked when talking about the best Boston movies among your The Departeds and Good Will Huntings, but this has a very strong case for being at the top. Some Sean Penn movies you should check out: Bad Boys, (No, not the one you're thinking of) a coming-of-age crime film from 1983, Carlito's Way (1993) where Pacino is the protagonist but Penn really steals that movie, and The Game (1997) where he has a small role, but it's a very slept-on Fincher movie. A Kevin Bacon movie I'd love for you to check out is the 1998 erotic thriller Wild Things. As the title suggests, it's wild! Instead of Noir November next year, how about Naughty November? A month dedicated to some of the best erotic thrillers out there. We haven't gotten a lot of that genre on here, if any.
