Wow, on the day he was heading home. I can’t imagine -Sam

I never feel right saying that a movie about war is "good", I just consider how well it tells the story it sets out to tell, and how well it helps me understand, just a little, what war vets went through. The father of my two half brothers lost his legs in Viet Nam on the day his tour was up and he was heading home. I never asked him about his experiences, but now and then something would make feel the need to share them.

I believe its a mixture of real and ones taken by the filmmakers

SGM Plumley was one of the biggest badasses in the Army. Very few men had 5 combat jumps.

Jason Mangen

I believe Colin Powell said Hal Moore was the one of the greatest officers ever to serve in the US army--high praise indeed. this film is a homage to their bravery. thanks for doing this one guys

Conspiracy Theory and Ransom are great films!

oh yeah, you are right, different wars! I guess from my memory, each movie felt similar!

Terry Lee

Wait a second, I thought "Windtalkers" takes place during World War 2? Unless you've really mixed it up with another War film?

Guston Zimasheen

I don't know why my brain always switches We Were Soldiers with another war movie called Windtalkers because this is Mel Gibson and the other is Nicolas Cage… Both take place during Vietnam though!

Terry Lee

Next Mel Gibson Films Should be "Conspiracy Theory " from 1997 with Julia Roberts!!! Great Action Film from Lethal Weapon Director Richard Donner ... And "Ransom" from 1996 With René Russo and Gary Sinise !!! Perfect Thriller from Ron Howard

The movie only covers the first half of the Battle of the Ia Drang Valley. Colonel Hal Moore was not involved in the second half since his forces were relieved. The reinforcements after replacing him at LZ X-Ray were ordered to march overland to LZ Albany another clearing miles away. The unit was strong out in the jungle as their commanding officers were discussing how to occupy the clearing and deploy their men. The reinforcements for the Vietnamese marched right into it and what followed was a nightmarish day of fighting with no lines. Just pockets of US soldiers trying to survive. Some men spent a week in the jungle escaping and evading. Others rallied and secured the LZ. To this day, there are still US soldiers MIA from the battle, their bodies never found. Every few years, new dead from the battle are still discovered. As to why the air mobile infantry marched instead of flew by chopper is an order that no one knows who gave. Whoever made this blunder was not exposed. Many years later, back in the 90s or early 2000s, Hal Moore and Joseph Galloway went to Vietnam and met with General An who we see in the film leading the Vietnamese soldiers. Also, I believe the montage of Black and White pictures are real ones that Galloway took during the battle.
