The games take a lot of inspiration from BloodSport and the movie in particular takes a lot of inspiration from Enter the Dragon(Bruce Lee). The tournament, the boat, the feast before the tournament. All elements taken from Enter the Dragon. This movie, while full of 80s/90s chees, was so popular the later games actually incorporated a lot of plot elements from the movie. You can watch full playthroughs of Mk9 to MK11 on YT and you'll see a lot of overlaping plot points. Hell, MK11 even has Chris Lambert and Cary Takagawa(Raiden and Shang Tsung) reprise their roles

For more Christopher Lambert you should watch Highlander 2. It's awful, but in a very entertaining way, heh heh heh

LOL. But he didn't know about Baraka. "One of the characters has a lot of freaky teeth, but I'm not sure. Maybe that was Kitana."

TBH This one is forgettable as well. Even after watching it, although it was fun I probably would only ever watch it on this channel.
You know it's funny. I notice a lot of times now when people write articles or podcast or what not about things.. It still seems like they don't ever really do their proper research.
So imagine if that's now imagine back then when the Internet didn't exist lol. Probably really difficult to learn about the games without the Internet and without playing them, which I'm sure they weren't allowed to do much of / didn't have any interest.

Yep. Strangely enough I can't remember any of the video game movies that I hated, but I definitely remember the inaccurate reimagining of character's powers and other things.
When the first MK came out they put a machine at the local Food Spot, it's like 7 Eleven. I used to walk there every day after school with a bunch of quarters and play it for hours.
I was a huge SF2 fan and competitor but MK was really cool coz it was the first game where they actually digitized real actors.
Yeah, I remember getting a strategy guide for one of the MK games, not sure if it was MK2 or 3.. Probably 3? Whichever was the first to get Babalities and Friendships, and I wrote all the codes for the Fatalities, Babalities and Friendships down on a piece of paper.
Until like you said. GameFAQs was great/is great.

It's the epitome of 80s cheese, I love it.
I was looking forward to the end scene where Rayden laughs again because I knew TBR would absolutely love it LOL.
It's actually the signature Christopher Lambert laugh as you can see from Highlander here: https://mega.nz/file/iKoURTLA#KuvDCdVQNR7AP2K15BN9yxFRSNF0tStGHX8b-o8oJ0Q

Daniel: “Yeah, I don’t know much about Mortal Kombat.”
…begins to name the most popular characters, talks about the video games, the animated films, the reboot from a few years ago, the upcoming sequel with Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, tells Sam how Johnny Cage was modeled after Jean Claude Van Damme, etc. J/P 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Oh damn, I didn't know about Sonya being based on Cynthia Rothrock, but it is pretty obvious when you see her original character design in the game.

If you knew more about the video game then this movie would actually disappoint you a little (or a lot depending on the person). I knew enough to know that they did a lot of things very wrong, while attempting to match the video game cliches. Despite that I still enjoyed it, because back then no one took video game or comic book movies seriously like they do now, so you just settled for what you got.
And the sequel is forgettable and avoidable. It does nothing well, and just disappoints even more. imo.

It really is a quintessential 90s video game movie, back when nobody in Hollywood really knew anything about the actual games. I think MK II had been out for at least a year by then.
Some things about being a kid I really miss was when everything was novel and new. I was like nine when MK first came to arcades. There was something scary and forbidden about it. Sub-Zero's original head rip fatality blew my fucking mind. Of course every playground discussion centered on MK, especially when the home versions were released. Back when you had to buy a magazine to look up the fatalities. Until GameFAQs appeared online, anyway.

This movie doesn't disappoint (no pun / reverse pun intended?) to be a perfect example of 90s video game movie recreations, where the creators seem to have no desire whatsoever to be faithful to the details of the game.
I can tell I have grown as a person from when I was a teenager coz stuff like the over the top alive Scorpion grapple hook would have had me fuming. It does not behave that way at all-- he launches it at you, it digs into you, he says "Get over here" and then pulls you to him.
But they always managed to at least get one thing right, or in this case two, and it always hits great when you see it. In this movie that would be Liu Kang's bicycle kick against Reptile and Johnny Cage's ball punch.
It was interesting that Jax was in this and Kitana because I didn't think Mortal Kombat 2 was out by then but I guess it must have been.
Goro was done really well and I kept waiting to see the move where he picks the guy up and just starts beating on him with all 4 arms.
In the game Goro can be beat it's just he's incredibly difficult because none of your moves really phase him and take so little off his health bar.
But yeah I would've also been screaming back then about Kitana wearing some regular clothes instead of her awesome uniform which is just as iconic as Sub Zero/Scorpion and her bladed fans.
All in all I expected cringe and it lived up to it well. Agreed the Reptile and Scorpion fights were the best.
Sonia was just man.. In the beginning that was some of the worst room clearing acting I've ever seen, it almost seemed like a dance LOL.
Really wish Raiden would have fought, and would've loved to hear his "Ryubuffalay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" move.

I always enjoyed this one. I know it is not the best, but it was still a lot of fun. I was never good at the game, but I liked it any how. So I was there opening week to see this movie in the theater. And it has a kick ass theme song.

The film's structure is borrowed from the Bruce Lee classic Enter the Dragon (1973 and the first Hollywood martial arts film). The Mortal Kombat games was a sort of hodgepodge of martial arts and fantasy films, like Bloodsport and Big Trouble in Little China to name but a couple.
Pretty much everything involving Reptile was added after principal photography during reshoots. That's why Johnny doesn't help during the fight. Linden Ashby wasn't available.
Sonya was pretty poorly handled unfortunately. IIRC, the character in the games was inspired by B-movie star Cynthia Rothrock, a very talented martial artist.
Bridgette Wilson was clearly not that but considering she replaced the also not a martial artist Cameron Diaz (after she injured herself during training) it makes it seem to me that the production was more interested in getting a young supermodel than someone truly qualified for the part. Rothrock was 37 when the film was shot while Wilson was 21.
Christophe Lambert does have a rather distinctive laugh wouldn't you say? :)
The coda with the Emperor was a last minute addition and it did lead into a sequel... infamously so. Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997) is pretty universally despised. As a kid, I had seen parts of the first film on tv and rented the second one by mistake. Meaning that I saw the sequel in full before the original. At that age I didn't care but as a teen ooofffffff. Now, I don't know, It's been so long.
Unfortunately, everybody except for Liu Kang and Kitana is recast and director Paul W.S. Anderson declined to return to focus on a new project. You might have heard of it... Event Horizon.

Johnny Cage was based off of Van Damme. They asked Van Damme to play the part but because he had other movies he couldn't do it. The creators of Mortal Kombat based their game off of Van Damme because they were huge fans of him and Bloodsport. Its why the Johnny Cage split and punch to the balls was his move. You guys should definitely watch Kickboxer next when you can. It was Van Dammes next big movie in 1989 after Bloodsport and many think Kickboxer is better!!!

If you like super cheesy fun, with awesome one liners and epic music, you have to check out Hackers. Top 3 guilty pleasure for me. Came out the same year too.

Such a great reaction. I would recommend Street Fighter for Raul Julia alone (Gomez Addams). He plays M Bison and it was his last performance as an actor, something he wanted to leave behind for his kids. It's very cheesy but worth a watch.

Cameron Diaz was originally cast as Sonya but she broke her wrist during training and was replaced. I think she's ultimately happy that happened.
Also the Mortal Kombat song Techno Syndrome was everywhere at the time. Unescapable but it got you going.

there is a direct sequel called "Mortal Kombat Annihilation".. um knowing you two I think you'll would definitely appreciate it and find some good things to say but over all it was not liked by the hardcore MK fans lol the first one was so successful that the studio wanted a sequel asap, the script was rushed and that alone set the precedence, but me personally sure react to it id enjoy it 😁
