Oh I love that callback! I don't know how we didn't put that together! Such a fantastic episode! Ah we did not catch that about Hanzee, thank you for sharing! A ton of great information here!

I’ve heard a lot of people compare him to Lorne. Especially with what he turns out to be. I don’t know if you’ve seen the other seasons, or put it together at the end of this one. But he definitely outshines the Gearhearts even. Hanzi’s the man.

Hanzee is emerging as a very, very bad guy, but I'd really like to know his history. Not a villain like Lorne Malvo, just a killing machine.

I really enjoy the callbacks to film because they don't make them completely obvious like the show is winking at the audience saying, "Hey guys, you remember this, right?"

"Not too late to go to the movies!" Hmmm a Schmitt that likes to watch movies, maybe there is a familial connection!

Ok now then...here is what I don't get. These characters who are told to lie down in a pit (or stand on the edge of tall building etc) and they KNOW they are going to get killed and they do it anyway. I guess you could say panic makes them freeze but heck, you got 100% chance of death if you do what you are told but if you run, or anything you MIGHT get away somehow. Heck I would run at my killers screaming knowing full well I am gonna die but dammit at least I will get my blood on their clothes. Much like Billy Bob Thorntons character, Davy Crocket in the movie "The Alamo (2004)" whose last line as he is about to get bayoneted by Mexicans says " I wanna warn you all, I'm a screamer." FYI...that movie also has Patrick Wilson (Lou Solverson). Okay then.

RIP Skip. The character was a very clear homage to Jerry Lundegaard from the film and the actor played it perfectly.

The lock on the door to the typewriter place looks like it was removed in the same way Anton Chigurgh would break into a place in No Country for Old Men. Hank has the line "...all for a little money" like in the film as well.
I'd agree that this is the best episode... so far anyway. It's when the story really starts to take hold, along with the themes they're playing with for the whole season. The mob war with a big city outfit and a small town crime family is a metaphor for how the world was becoming more corporate as the 70's were ending and the 80's were beginning. The small "mom and pop" businesses were starting to get swallowed up. Even though it's organized crime, Kansas City is structured like a legitimate corporation. People don't matter and it's the profit that matters above all. If murder turns out to be the more profitable solution, it is always what they'll go with regardless of any feelings.
Fun fact: A year before this season is set is when the US legalized massive corporate "campaign donations" to politicians.
I'm also pretty sure that Hanzee flashback implies that he grew up in the US residential school system that took native children from their families and raised them in boarding schools for the purpose of isolating them from their own culture and assimilating them into "proper" society. Here in Canada, the residential school system made headlines when they started finding mass graves of children who died under their "care".
