Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Great reactions Sam and Dan! Yeah, for a long time I would always get Brooke Adams (Elizabeth) and Karen Allen (Marion in "Indiana Jones") confused. I think the last thing I've seen Brooke Adams in is a pretty good adaptation of Stephen King's "The Dead Zone" (1983). I'm sure she's been in other stuff, just nothing comes to mind. And yes, she CAN do that thing with her eyes. I was pretty surprised to see this movie on a "Body Horror" poll, let alone win it. As you've noted it's more psychological terror / horror than anything else. The 1956 version is just as terrifying; playing on the paranoia of the Cold War of the 1950s. Who can you trust? Same aspects of paranoia as "The Thing" (1982).

My first time watch too! So glad to share this experience with you guys, fantastic film!

This movie is definitely one of my favorites, and is definitely my favorite version . Glad you guys liked it. It's been a while since I've seen the 1956 version, but from what I remember, this version definitely amps up the paranoia factor, and the sense of helplessness that events are happening so fast and beyond anyone's control. In the very first scene the teacher is already telling the children to pick flowers. I also liked how Leonard Nimoy played Dr. Kibner as the pod person with the most emotion (I personally believe he was a pod person from the very beginning), playing against type of his role as Mr. Spock from the Star Trek TV series who did not express any emotion. I believe that was deliberate in the casting and direction. The 1993 version ("Body Snatchers") is also good and has R. Lee Ermey , who played the drill sergeant from Full Metal Jacket, also against type. For suggestions, I suggest "Don't Look Now" (1973), starring Donald Sutherland, a psychological thriller set in Venice. Also directed by Phillip Kaufman is "The Right Stuff", about the early days of the American space program, which Jeff Goldblum has a small part in (and Veronica Cartwright! but they have no scenes together.)

I like this version so much more than the original, or the 2007 “remake”.

Last year I watched all four Body Snatchers movies, and honestly, I thought they were all pretty good. Although I agree that this one is the best of the four, I think each of them has something going for it. The original is of course the original, and this one is the best. 1992's Body Snatchers is probably the least essential, but if you watch the original, I think that's the one that has the most fun being sort of self-aware as a remake, intentionally riffing on and having fun with the hallmarks that they all inherit from the book. Although the 2007 Nicole Kidman version The Invasion seems to be the least popular from a critical and audience standpoint, I thought it was actually the *most* interesting in the sense that it's the only one of the four that really chooses to try and say something explicit and specific about the phenomenon that's occurring. (You can apply the basic premise of "the people around me look the same, but something is wrong with them" to whatever kind of paranoia you want to -- the original, being made in the 1950s, suggests McCarthyism; critics would say that the 1970s version was about the end of the San Francisco counterculture of the 1960s with people assimilating into a more straight and traditional society, and director Philip Kaufman cited the Jonestown Massacre as something that he felt fit in with what he was trying to do).

Yeah there's a lot of shows to get to. But trust me it comes before you know it. I remember there was a point where I literally exhausted all the shows that I could possibly watch that were good (that I knew about) and there was nothing else to watch. I didn't know about Fargo or Ash vs. Evil Dead or any of that.. but the point will come. I still recommend Buffy & Angel regardless of the stigma of HS trash romance, it's a LOT more than that. Amazing character development et al and currently watching another reactor do it and they comment the same-- the character development is amazing.

My mom could do the vibrating eyes thing. It took her about two minutes of concentration, but then BOOM. We loved it as kids.

Leonard Nimoy is in Fringe.. and since you guys haven't watched any Star Trek OMG.. eventually you need to go through all the series. Next Generation and Deep Space Nine are especially classics. Voyager is great also. Ones after that are kinda like Star Wars 7-9, but I still enjoy them.. Discovery for instance is pretty cool. Star Trek: Enterprise is cool also. The first ship with the name Enterprise, even before Kirk. It was the first time they ever went out into deep space I believe. (It's been a long time)

A worthy remake of the original, keeping the same creepiness. Both are terrific.

David Martin

Great Films with Donald Sutherland are "Klute" from 1971, "Mash" from 1970, "The Day of the Locust" from 1975 and "Space Cowboys" from 2000 with Clint Eastwood and Tommy Lee Jones

Duvall played Jesse James in Philip Kaufman's earlier film, The Great Northfield, Minnesota Raid, and I think he was just visiting the set when Kaufman decided to throw him into the film.

It seems like they remake this movie every 15 to 20 years or so: “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1956 & 1978) “Body Snatchers” (1993) “The Invasion” (2007) “Annihilation” (2018) did a great job with the same type of premise, dealing with a tiny alien organism taking over. I’d say “The Thing” (1982) did it the best. Two more good alien invasion movies along the same type of storyline would be: “Night of the Creeps” (1986) “Slither” (2006, James Gunn’s first movie).

Mr. Writhms

The man who runs into Matthew's car screaming "They're coming! You're next!" is Kevin McCarthy, the star of the 1956 film. He's basically recreating an iconic moment from the original in this scene. Don Siegel, the director of the first film, played the cabbie who turned them in on the way to the airport. He also directed a number of Clint Eastwood's early films including the original Dirty Harry.

That was a really fun watch... thank you both for the great reaction. I haven't seen this movie in a while. I never realized the priest on the swing at the beginning of the movie was Robert Duvall. It's such a quick scene I was thinking... no way that's him. But yeah, I looked it up and it's him.
