The Aviator (2004) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

You guys mentioned that nothing he did ultimately succeeded. You need to do wiki on Howard Hughes, including the Howard Hughes Medical Institute https://www.hhmi.org/, and the Howard Hughes Aircraft Company https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hughes_Aircraft_Company

Lana Gorgeous

So many movie stars from that era were real crazy characters in real life. Jude Law was playing Errol Flynn who was the swashbuckling superstar around that time. Always getting into brawls and heavy drinking. Check him out in The Adventures of Robin Hood.

mattosh79

Excellent reaction to an excellent movie.

This was the beginning of the β€œwait how has Leo not won an Oscar yet!?” Era

Jeremy Garner

One more Hepburn movie I recommend and haven't seen anyone else suggest is Adam's Rib. It's a good story with some clever writing and great performances by Hepburn and Spencer Tracy.

Gary A. Neilson

So crazy! Would love to check out any links you have 😊 -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Love this flick. It was filmed in my hometown, LBC!

Philip Davetas

Growing up I was an Aerospace fan and watched a lot of documentaries about different companies, planes and innovators. From what I remember Hughes aircraft did a lot more than just what they showed. I think the most notable thing they did was work with CIA to secretly recover a Russian sub K-129. I'll try to find some links, but I'm kind of a boomer when it comes to that stuff.

Coming soon to Apple TV

Jason Dolan

LOL she was not having it when we were trying to film the outro so onto my lap she went πŸ˜‚ -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Unfortunately, we’ve seen it! That is definitely a movie I wish we could watch for the first time on the channel, so good! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Totally agree with your comments on this film! We’ve seen quite a few movies now or in this case real world people that would be so much different in today’s world, just in terms of medical advances -Sam

TBR Schmitt

That’s so cool that the Spruce Goose was there! I’ve seen the Queen Mary there but had no interest in going on it and leaving with a ghost friend πŸ˜‚ -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh interesting! I didn’t even realize it was a remake at the time! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Thanks for sharing all this! So cool to read! Also, I definitely googled if Katharine was related to Audrey haha -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Please do not watch Plan 9 lol. It is genuinely terrible. But Ed Wood is genuine awesome.

Ellie Miller

LOL Coen Brothers giving us trust issues! We’ll definitely be checking out those hearings -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Thank you! It probably wasn’t totally necessary for this film but just in case! I think in the case of biopics 😊 My best friend is the same way with reading the synopsis first haha -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Unfortunately, we’ve both already seen Shutter Island! Amazing film! I don’t think I’ve heard of Killers of the Flower Moon! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Can’t wait too! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Haha we’ve heard of Plan 9 from Outer Space but haven’t seen it! Thanks for the biopic recommendation! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I love that all the recommendations for Katharine Hepburn have been different! It means she must have an incredible catalog! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Yes she is! Cary Grant, Grace Kelly and now Katharine Hepburn, so excited to see more! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Awesome! Thanks for the recommendations, Jason! We’ll definitely need to check it out 😊 -Sam

I loved the cute cameo at the end:)

the "spruce goose"--is preserved at a museum in Oregon, its a truly massive aircraft--look up google images to see just how big it is. BTW, Hughes is the father of modern Helicopters and many other aviation firsts. What a genius, and, BTW, a great film, too! :)

Chris Bruneau

Some great choices here (especially Molly's Game, I, Tonya and Ed Wood). However, Oliver Stone has made some biopics: Nixon and W (which are both okay) but JFK is not one of them. I would love for them to watch JFK (which is a fascinating fire-hose of conspiracy theories) but it is not a biopic of the President or Jim Garrison. Also, Stan and Ollie is a real snooze. Watch the ultimate music biopic "Walk Hard" instead.

Dan McComb

Some great biopics: Elvis (2022) Oppenheimer The Electrical Life of Louis Wain 127 Hours JFK Molly's Game I, Tonya Stan & Ollie Ed Wood The Aeronauts The Social Network Walk The Line

Another film that "involves" Howard Hughes is Howard and Me. It's a fairly quirky film and may be one you just want to check out on your own.

Gary A. Neilson

One Katherine Hepburn film I would recommend is On Golden Pond. I believe it came out in 1981 so later in her career. It's a fairly simple story, but it also explores some themes that are very much based in reality for many people. It's really dialogue driven as it was originally a play but with some beautiful scenery thrown in. I believe it was Henry Fonda's last film, and he kind of steals the show for me. But the very small cast does an excellent job as well.

Gary A. Neilson

We need Shutter Island next!

Odd Thomas

Yes to Million Dollar Baby.

Fantastic movie (one of my favorites) and great reaction. I think it's my favorite Scorcese film outside his "gangster" pics. The pace really gets into the manic frame of mind of Hughes- moving from one project to another. I like how the cinematography matches that employed during each time period depicted in the movie - it changes so gradually you don't even notice it (I like Sam's comment - "The grass is blue!"). The acting is superb - DiCaprio totally captures his mania, and the episodes of OCD. It got much worse after the events depicted in the movie- he spent the last years of his life living in hotels in Vegas and the Caribbean, pretty much as depicted in the "Come in with the milk" sequence. Yet Hughes still managed to die one of the wealthiest, if not the wealthiest man in America (at the time). Hughes Aircraft and Howard Hughes Medical Institute made him a lot of money (and Tool Co. too). It's too bad OCD wasn't as recognized as a disease as much as it is today, so he could get treatment, and to bad that he was surround by sycophants (especially at the end) - he could have been even greater. By the way, yes PanAm is no longer around, but neither is TWA, having merged with American Airlines in 2001. According to Wikipedia, Hughes gave up his interest in the airline in the mid 1960s.

There's a few other films that have Howard Hughes in them or are about him- MELVIN AND HOWARD (which I mentioned in the Coming Soon thread) - during the period Howard was even more reclusive. He's only in a couple scenes though. The whole film is definitely worth watching though. There's THE HOAX , Starring Richard Gere, about Clifford Irving, who wrote a fake autobiography of Hughes, and TUCKER: THE MAN AND HIS DREAM, which features a scene with Hughes.

Samolina Pilchard

This is probably the first movie that convinced me that Leonardo Di Caprio is an amazing, elite actor, his performance is seriously captivating. It's also a great example of Scorsese's range as a director. Really great movie, loved this reaction. Also, the Queen Mary is still docked in Long Beach of course (haunted AF lol), but I remember when I was a kid, the "Spruce Goose" was also a tourist attraction there, how ironic that they called it that, I had no idea that Howard Hughes hated that name. I have seen the old clips from that trial and yeah, he really lays into them, it's pretty impressive. But sadly yeah, he spent the last years of his life in seclusion, I believe he occupied a whole floor of a hotel in Las Vegas.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Howard Hughes produced "Scarface" (1932, directed by Howard Hawks). You reacted to the 1983 remake. Instead of cocaine, the Hughes story dealt with illegal liquor.

Mr. Writhms

This isn't my favorite Scorsese movie, but it is a landmark because we get to see Scorsese use a lot of CGI for the first time. I still recommend "Tucker" (1988) because it's also about a self taught engineer who had a huge impact on the automotive industry, directed by Coppola. Please also add "Bugsy" (1991) as a companion to Casino. It completes the story by explaining how the mafia essentially started Las Vegas as we know it. "The Right Stuff" (1983) is also an outstanding engineering film about how the first American astronauts started as test pilots.

Howard Hughes, or at least his mythical public image (the glorious ladies man, entrepeneur and inventor) is sort of the father of all such character in fiction. His most famous fictional son being Iron Man. Down to both of them essentially flipping off a public hearing to the crowd's applause (although the Hughes version in this film is sadder and rawer of course, since it's suppose to represent the real man.) Hughes himself appears in a lot of films and books in the same way as one would use Einstein or Freud. A great use of him is in the wonderful adventure film The Rocketeer (1991), where he's played by Terry O'Quinn. Don't worry, Cate Blanchett won the Oscar for best supporting actress for this film. As I was watching the film, I had this nagging feeling that Hepburn (no relation to Audrey Hepburn btw) had a legendary romance with another Hollywood star. Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy starred in many films together and stayed a couple until Tracy's death in 1967. About Hughes' film career, he was mainly a producer and in the 10 years after The Aviator's events he bought and became the studio head of RKO. In real life, his sole directing credits were for Hell's Angels and The Outlaw. On both he used co-directors, James Whale was hired to direct the dialogue scenes when the movie was reshot for sound. Whale became famous for directing the first two Frankenstein films in 1931 and 1935. Howard Hawkes, director of the original Scarface (produced by Hughes) and many classic Westerns like Red River and Rio Bravo was an uncredited co-director on Outlaw. All in all though many of his films were successes at the box-office, many were so expensive that it made it impossible to be profitable. The guy was flushing money left and right. PS: Odie was played by Matt Ross. He was Luis the flamboyant colleague of Patrick Bateman in American Psycho.

Love The Aviator !!! One of my Favorite Scorsese !!! He lost at the Oscars 2004 to "Million Dollar Baby" from Clint Eastwood !!! Please check out this Masterpiece !!! You will Love it !!! Oscar for Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman and Hilary Swank!!

Florian Meier

I think this is one of the best acting films of Leo. Unlike all the Coen Brothers lies we have seen, this was based on actual events..LOL btw, you can see a lot of those hearings on Youtube.

Robert Smith

I like you doing a little mild research before the movie πŸ‘ I don't think it spoils anything, im all for it! before I watch a movie I always read the synopsis lol I can't watch a movie super blind I need to know a little bit 🀷😁

dieselbeast

You also have to watch THE ROCKETEER which features Terry O'Quinn from LOST as Hughes and it's funny DiCaprio's Hughes say Don't tell me what I can and can't do in this movie which was John Locke's catchphrase. Lol. But anyway The Rocketeer is great and also kind of has an Errol Flynn tie in, haha

Jason Dolan

Ed Wood 100%

Jason Dolan

Shutter Island is probably the last Scorsese DiCaprio movie for your Bingo list - until Killers of the Flower Moon that is.

Jason Dolan

Warren Beatty made a Howard Hughes movie called RULES DON'T APPLY about Hughes in his later years so sort of functions as a sequel to this.

Jason Dolan

I love all her classics but BRINGING UP BABY is still my favorite to watch over and over. Second to Philadelphia Story. Can’t wait for you two to get into her!

Abby

Ed Wood (1994) directed by Tim Burton starring Johnny Depp! Ed Wood is considered the worst director of all time and made arguably the worst movie of all time Plan 9 From Outer Space. BUT I think it's the best movie ever made about moviemaking. Incredibly funny and oddly inspirational.

Ellie Miller

Katharine Hepburn was one of the greatest and most beloved stars of classic Hollywood. Honestly, she deserves her own bracket on the channel. If you do have one, I guarantee the romantic comedy Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967) will win because of its popular political message--it's the movie of hers that's most watched today. But I really encourage you to check out some of her other work too, particularly the romantic drama The Philadelphia Story (1940) starring Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart and which was her most iconic role, and the romantic adventure The African Queen (1951) starring Humphrey Bogart.

Hunter DeRensis

Cate Blanchett is the GOAT. Katharine Hepburn's Mid-Atlantic accent was in fashion at the time, kind of an American/British hybrid. It was supposed to be the upper class American accent, but nowadays it's more made fun of as a silly, pretentious affectation. Other actors you've seen on the channel who have that accent are Cary Grant in North by Northwest and the beautiful Grace Kelly in Rear Window. Also the color grading (particularly in the beginning) is meant to reflect the color limitations during the time period. Howard Hughes shot Hell's Angels around 1927 and that's what color movies looked like at that time. Once we go into the 1930s, the color is much more natural and what we're used to.

Ellie Miller

For Jude Law's ERROL FLYNN you should watch the Adventures of Robin Hood

Jason Dolan

For the love of God, make ON GOLDEN POND your first Katharine Hepburn movie. Both she and Henry Fonda won the best actor and actress Oscars and Jane Fonda, the real life daughter of Henry plays his daughter and it is just a MASTERPIECE! You can watch older Hepburn like Philadelpha Story and Afircan Queen but I highly recommend starting the way I did, with On Golden Pond. Make it a Patreon Exclusive even. But holy crap you'll love it.

Jason Dolan

The best way to think about Hell's Angels is what if ELON MUSK decided to finance and direct a movie with a 73 billion dollar budget starring Margot Robbie.

Jason Dolan

Incredible - been waiting a while for this one
