You commented on the characters played by Keanu Reeves, Denzel Washington, and Liam Neeson all being sort of stoic and cold in the violence they carried out. I know the type.
I have a younger brother those characters remind me of - he's a nice guy, kind to kids and animals and most people, honest, generous, good sense of humor, hard-working (he's an electrician) - we're both old Marines, but he's the one who was on his command's competitive shooting team. He's not a big guy - 5'7" and maybe 130 lbs., gray hair, beard, usually in overalls for work, drives an old pickup. I have four inches and seventy pounds on him, and if he came at me, I wouldn't last five seconds.
He was on his way home from work when a carload of teenage shitheads decided to have some fun with the funny looking little guy in overalls. They started swerving their car at him and yelling at him. He pulled off the street into a vacant lot; they pulled up next to him and piled out of their car with knives and bats and so on. He already had his truck's door open and a pistol leveled at them - as that was registering on them, he sighed and called out, "Okay, who's first?" He was just tired and wanted to go home and put his feet up. Knowing him, I doubt his pulse even went up more than a few beats a minute. They got back in their car faster than they'd gotten out and left, and he went the rest of the way home. I probably would never have even heard about it except that his wife noticed him clearing the pistol when he got home and asked what had happened, and I heard it from her.
His stepdaughter was dating a guy who treated her pretty badly. My brother got tired of watching the drama. One day when this guy was at their house, my brother took his pistol out of its holster, took a round out of the magazine, opened the blade of his pocket knife and fiddled with the cartridge for a minute, then walked over and held it up in front of the guy's nose. He had carved his first name into the bullet. He said, "I just want you to know that there's one of these with your name on it," smiled, put the cartridge and knife in his pocket, and walked out of the room. I heard about that one from a couple of family members who were there.
Maybe I'm weird, but I'm kind of glad there are people like him around.

EQUALIZER 2014 came out BEFORE John Wick 2014. The Equalizer came out in theaters on September 26, 2014, and John Wick came out on October 24, 2014

PTSD is what separates The Equalizer from other action franchises, except Rambo. Both Robert and Rambo have PTSD from combat and question the morality of what they have done for their country. Both try to make positive contributions to society after they leave the military. The biggest difference is that Robert's methods are much more believable to me than Rambo's. For me, First Blood and Last Blood were the only movies in the Rambo franchise that were believable. The others were just too way over the top for me to believe. The Equalizer movies have been very believable so far. Despite all of their money, Russian and Chinese billionaires are very disposable. We hear about those guys falling out of windows or drinking bad tea at least a few times every year.

What have you watched with Bob? He's more recently best known for his Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul shows. Before that he was an amazing comedian with various stand ups, and Mr. Show was a hilarious series.
If you've only watched Breaking Bad, then Better Call Saul would make for a great reaction series :)

You mentioned wanting to watch Nobody at some point. I think you would absolutely love that movie. An amazing movie that deserved so much more popularity than it got.

The 80s tv show was amazing. One of those shows you watched and then every kid in school was talking about it the next day.

I loved the theme song from the 80's TV show by Stewart Copeland of The Police. It was such a great intro. As far as Denzel Washington movies: Courage Under Fire, Devil In A Blue Dress, Flight, The Hurricane, Malcolm X and Philadelphia.

If only Robert would've scraped together an extra couple of hundred bucks and made an even $10,000 offer, perhaps everyone would've survived.

This movie and its sequels were directed by Antoine Fuqua. I don't think I would call him a great director, but I would call a GOOD director, He has mainly worked in the action/thriller genres and he's rock solid. Most of his movies focuses on experts soldiers or ex-soldiers of some kind fighting corruption head on.
His breakout movie was Training Day (2001, also with Denzel). He made a war movie with Bruce Willis called Tears of the Sun (2003), a conspiracy thriller with Mark Wahlberg called Shooter (2007) and a remake of the classic western The Magnificent Seven (2016 and itself a remake of Seven Samurai) that I recommend.
I'm not an expert on the subject, but The Equalizer is a very loose adaptation of an 80's tv show. The movie kind of presents itself as an origin story of how/why Robert McCall decided to become a vigilante. The end of the movie were he uses an email ("Odds against you?') was the set-up in the show. Someone would be in trouble and would find a newspaper add with that headline and call the number and the Equalizer would come to "equalize" the scales of justice.
The show does have one of the sweetest intros ever, with music from The Police's drummer Stewart Copeland : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g87nDBIyqeU

The Equalizer is sort of a remake of a TV series from the 80s with the same name. A few really good Denzel movies : Inside Man, Out of Time, Fallen, and Flight. A few other vigilante movies you might like : Get Carter (original with Michael Caine or the remake with Stallone), Harry Brown (also starting Michael Caine), Death Wish, Night Hunter,

I never watched the original t.v. series for The Equalizer, but after the Denzel movies I really want to. I did try watching the Queen Latifah t.v. version, but I was not all that impressed with it. I may try again though.

There's a great Korean action film from 2010 called The Man from Nowhere that has a very similar plot setup to The Equalizer.

You need a good eye to catch that Robert is a "retired" member of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) in this movie based upon his conversations with his friends and how meticulous he is in everything he does, like a soldier always training. That's why I think Stallone missed an big opportunity to use this premise for Rambo in the 80's. The original tv show of the Equalizer in the 80's was about a former CIA agent, but I don't think they were ever allowed to actually say CIA in that show.

I enjoy pretty much all Denzel movies. Two that I really like because they had great actors as the villains are "Ricochete" with John Lithgow, and "Virtuosity" with a very young Russel Crowe. But pretty much anything that stars Denzel is a fun watch.
