Apocalypto (2006) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Let me guess; Death Death liked telling you long, boring stories about some woman from work she hated. Get thee behind me Satan!

Joe above gave a good breakdown of the history aspect. The movie is called "Apocalypto" which references the End of Days. I think the Catholicism of Gibson is using this story about the end of the Maya/Aztecs (he combines them) with the end of the world, with pestilence, violence, and famine bringing everything to an end, before the second coming of Christ and "a new beginning." I don't think it's as simple as "It was good that Spanish colonization occurred", although it definitely helps puts things in perspective there, with what was happening before European arrival. I think the main thing is a spiritual reflection from him that's a very interesting and thoughtful piece of art.

The Mayans were obsessed with Time, and very good at calculating it. It's just so crazy to me that these people in the jungle were so good at math, and just because they wanted to understand the rhythms of the universe. Btw, there's a site (mymayansign) that can tell you what your Mayan name would be, based on your birthday. The Mayan horoscope basically, but it's way more specific than the popular horoscope, it's specific to the day and year. Mine is very accurate, I'm a Road Dog 3 lol, which makes so much sense because I love to travel and I'm a very loyal person. Spookiest thing is all three of my exes have the same Mayan sign, Death lol, one was Death Eagle, another was Death Wind, the other was Death Death, no shit. But Death isn't considered negative, it represents transition and growth. So I don't know what to make of that.

Great Reaction to a Masterpiece !! Love it !!! I recommend from Mel Gibson "Gallipoli" from 1981, "Tequila Sunrise" from 1988 with Kurt Russell and Michelle Pfeiffer, "Bird on a Wire" from 1990 with Goldie Hawn, "Ransom" from 1996 with Rene Russo and Gary Sinise and "Conspiracy Theory" from 1997 with Julia Roberts

Love this movie. It's about 50% fantasy, but honestly I love seeing even any attempt at some native representation, and Mel Gibson, we can agree he is not a historian, but a great story teller. Braveheart is one of my favorites too, it's also extremely inaccurate. So if you want to see a well made, entertaining story, watch Mel Gibson movies, if you're trying to write a paper for history class... would be better to plagiarize Wikipedia. Just a little correction, can't help myself because I studied the Mayans and Aztecs in college: the Mayan collapse was a real thing, but it happened much earlier than the Spanish arriving in the 1500s, and it's still somewhat of a mystery as to exactly what happened; environmental degradation and a drought cycle combined with overpopulation is my personal hypothesis. Actually I also kind of agree with something Mel Gibson hinted at in this movie, I think the common Mayan people got sick of the elites and basically quit. Because the Mayans did not disappear, they're still there, they still exist, but they decided to stop building for the elite and went back to a simpler life. But anyway, when the Spanish did arrive the Mayans, or an offshoot of them at least, were actually thriving in the Yucatan, having mixed with another people, collectively they were called the Chichen-Itza. I also think a lot of this was Mel Gibson's intense Catholicism coming through, I think he really wanted to push the idea that Christianity saved the natives from themselves, which I don't personally agree with. But, it's his opinion and he's entitled to it. Now we know that there were civilizations even in the deepest Amazon, that were gone by the time the Spanish and Portuguese themselves physically explored the area. Old World diseases had already destroyed entire populations, we all know now from experience that viruses travel faster than people do. And now we also know that people in southern Mexico were experimenting with metallurgy, and the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan, was more organized with better sanitation (they had fresh, clean drinking water and they "recycled" their poo lol, it sounds gross but they understood the concept of fertilizer) than any city in Europe at least, probably the world, with 250,000 residents living on an artificial island.

So, historically speaking, this movie is said to be very inaccurate, from the look on down of the Mayan people around this time. And yet, I don't really care. I can just imagine this movie takes place in some other world, or some alternate universe, or who cares. Because I fucking love this movie. I love the acting, the action, the look (however incredibly inaccurate), the feel, and the whole visceral thing. It makes me feel something primal and raw and real. Always interesting on how movies can do that despite their flaws. I also like how the coming of the 'White Man' in the end is not viewed as a rescuing, but as a bad omen by Jaguar Paw. Good shit.

Haven't watched this movie in 10 years or so. Some really gnarly stuff. I love how it encompasses the nature of human beings, need for community and self-worth/actualization, safety, pride, joy, fear, anger. You're shocked at the customs and practices of the first tribe, and then the next tribe is more advanced and even more ruthless, and then you get to the "tribe" at the very end, and you realize we're the still the same no matter where in the global timeline we're at, just with more advanced technology.

Loved Sam's reaction, the prophecy scene was memorable

One of my favourite films, spectacular and incredibly powerful. The acting, the location and sets, the brutality, the story....awesome.

Mel Gibson used the Mayan language as best as possible. There is a great documentary on the making of Apocalypto that goes in the native people and how they were worked with Mel Gibson.

10’s of thousand were sacrificed. It was the last gasping breath of a vast dying empire.

OK...the "I'M WALKING HERE!" that the head of bad guys just yelled after the tree fell is hilarious as it reminds me of walking across streets in NYC.

So sad to see Sam go from such a beautiful smile when watching the family interaction at camp to the look of horror and sadness when the carnage happens. It's amazing how far humans have come and how cruel and uncaring we still are toward other people. Great film though. I dislike Mel GIbson politics and religious ideas but he is a great filmmaker.
