The Last Samurai (2003) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

The Last Samurai (2003) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

Also at the end of Pee Wee's Big Adventure.

Michael G. Munz

Heck yea, Kubrick's final film(w/ a dash of Spielberg) and Magnolia is one of Cruises best performances

Ken Veader

I was going to comment this. The scene where he forces the soldier to discharge his weapon comes to mind. Also, the narration from the main character and handing off his letters to a biographer is also similar to Glory. Both great movies though.

Mark M

One of the best things about this movie is how it introduced an American audience to both Ken Watanabe and Hiroyuki Sanada. Both have been in a ton of movie since. Sanada was in a great Japanese movie called Twilight Samurai that I'd definitely recommend, but I'm not sure if it's readily available on streaming at the moment.

Brandon

Magnolia 100%

Odd Thomas

It's a good movie but somewhat overrated imo

Odd Thomas

We still have my 2 favourite Tom Cruise films to go: Eyes Wide Shut Magnolia Both are uniquely nuts, and I can't wait to see your reactions to both. I also agree with everyone recommending The Firm. An incredible cast, and the kind of tense, mysterious storyline that I know you'll both love.

Future Boy

Lost In Translation (2003) with Bill Murray

Ken Veader

I was fortunate enough to see the US premier for this film at my college in a course on Samurai and how they are portrayed. The director held a screening for our class and spoke about the making of it and how they took great care to ensure the Japanese audiences would feel it captured their culture well. One of my favorite films for sure.

Ricardo Alanis

WOOOO !!!

Alec S

"Are these another kind of Samurai?" Lol what?!! You've never seen a ninja??? The correct name is really Shinobi.

Aaron Barlow

I'm still pulling for "Casualties of War" (1989) by Brian DePalma 🙏

Jonathan Patrick

Absolutely to Jerry Maguire, magnolia, and Vanilla Sky (not that the others are are bad or anything, I haven't seen several of them). Also note that if anyone recommends The Color of Money, I think you have probably already been told, but it is a sequel to The Hustler (1961), which is a masterpiece and I really hope you watch as well.

Tyler Foster

Edward Zwick is one of my fave directors, also some similarities to his Legends of the Fall deleted scenes (scalping). Ive been hoping for a Legends of the Fall reaction.

Jonathan Patrick

Great reaction! Glad you two enjoyed the movie! Another great film to watch is "The Last of the Mohicans" directed by Michael Mann.

Nismo

One of my favorite movies and a pleasure to watch it with you two. Daniel..if you already do the non-attached thumb trick, you're going to make a great dad.

Anthony Perez

I love Tom Cruise, and I love that he was in this film.

Vwlss Nvwls

The guy he is based off used guns so I honestly don’t know what the problem is. I know it looks cooler showing the honorable samurai, but that is simply not the case in real history. The image of the samurai we see in film are pure fantasy. Watch any samurai film from Japan. They are almost always about ronin. I’m just saying what media portrays is not true to history. These people were human like the rest of us.

Night King01

Wow really? This movie is brilliant from start to finish.

Aaron Barlow

The end of this movie is one of the few times in life a man is allowed to cry, the other is the end of Gladiator.

Aaron Barlow

I think that's an accurate thing for a noble Samurai who represents the traditional ways of Japan fighting to hold on to it. It makes a good contrast to the Westernised army going against him. Also the hand held guns at the time were awkward to reload while a bow can be reloaded and fired immediately as we saw in the beginning. The Gatling machine guns were nasty though.

Aaron Barlow

One of my favourite films. I yearn really hard when i watch this film, every single time.

Alex

It's interesting to think that only 30 years after this film takes place, the Japanese kick the hell out of a major world power - the Russians - on land and especially at sea

Smooticus

Thank you both for reacting to this. It's one of my all time favorite movies, and the music by Hans Zimmer just perfectly captures the nature and philosophy of the samurai. That ending is one of the most perfect endings when it comes to clarity and finally being at peace with yourself. Awesome reaction, and if you react to more Tom Cruise, I highly recommend "Interview with the Vampire" also. In the meantime, thank you again for checking off my personal list of movies I wanted you guys to react to!

EdmanXERO

I think one of the biggest problems with this film is the notion that katsumoto doesn’t use guns because of honor even though the samurai have been using guns since the 1500s lol. I think he could have won if he used them. Like you think in the field of battle common sense would trump honor.

Night King01

Love this movie so much and have been looking forward to watching it with you again. Thank you so much ! 😊😊

Ed Garland

Yeah, it's hard not to like this movie...Ken Watanabe is absolutely amazing in this.

Steve Mercier

I absolutely love this film, the acting the music, its fantastic!!!

Chris Bruneau

That's Right !! First "The Hustler"!!!

Florian Meier

The colour of money is so good 👍 would recommend the hustler first though fast Eddie is the man

Ian

Great Reaction Guys !! Not in my top 5 Cruise List, but in my Top 10 :) My Personal Favorite is "The Firm" from 1993 with Gene Hackman ... love also your Reactions to "A Few Good Men" and "Rain Man" !!! These Films are my Top 3 from Tom Cruise !! I recommend also "Cocktail" from 1988 with a great Soundtrack and "The Colour of Money" from 1986 with Paul Newman

Florian Meier

Another period drama with *The Last* in its name, which I'd like to recommend is 'The Last Duel' (2021). It has nothing to do with Japan though. It takes place in medieval France and is based on a true story. Directed by Ridley Scott, starring Matt Damon, Adam Driver, Ben Affleck, and Jodie Comer. Co-written by Damon and Affleck as well. One of my very favorite films of this century, I'd go as far as to say!

Shehab Dawoud

The entire samurai village sequence is just perfect

Sarah

The ninja scene is so great in this.

Tostito Buddy

Edward Zwick stole a few scenes from Glory (which he also directed), and that cooled me a little on this movie the first time I saw it as well. I've warmed up to it a little more since, and it's still a pretty good movie

Smooticus

Thank you to the Schmitt's for tonight's Essential Viewing 💚💛🧡💜💙💖

Duncan

I know what I'm watching this evening! :D

Reed James

Looking forward to this I hope you had tissues close at hand Sam cuz this is emotional 🫂 the costume design , scenery and visuals are incredible and the score is also fantastic 🥰 I can't imagine any world where you both don't love this movie , I have high hopes 🍿

Ian

I'm gonna give this movie another chance, i watched the first solid 15 minutes and it simply didn't hook me but maybe it needs more time then that lol I enjoy war movies I like cruise as an actor so maybe watching it with you'll two beautiful humans it will be better 😁

dieselbeast
